Kendra POV

I wake up that morning to the tinkling sound of fairy laughter outside of my window. I rub the sleep from my eyes and try to listen in to their conversation. Sadly, I stayed up too late last night, so I am basically a zombie and only manage to catch some of their words.

"Busy rebuilding...not coming for a while...miss him........"

I don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out who they are talking about. Bracken. I have been moping around for days thinking about him, which is totally uncharacteristic of me, so you can tell that I really do miss him a lot. Ever since that near end of world situation, I haven't so much as heard his voice. Not to mention the fact that he hasn't written to me either. Now the only thing that I can do is spend my days on a magical preserve until I go back to school. I sound super snobby saying that, I am grateful that I can go to a magical preserve, but I would rather be with Braken.

I haven't seen or heard from my boyfriend, or can I even call him that, in over two months! I am kind of pissed! Make that really pissed.

I need to get my head together and do something to take my mind off of Bracken.

I was in deep thought when the thing I call my brother decided to speak up from the door leading into our room.

"So are you just going to sit around all day again and think about Bracken?"

"Shut up. You wouldn't understand."

And I buried my face into a pillow.

"So I'll take that as a yes?"

"Just go away. Sell some batteries to your weird friends."

"Okay, if you say so..."

I listened to the door close before I finally found the willpower to force my self out of bed and get ready for another Brackenless day. Sighing, I walks down the stairs and into the kitchen to grab a granola bar before making my daily trip to the Fairyshrine.

As I was walking through the forest, I couldn't help but think if Bracken had just lost interest in me. I wouldn't blame him. There isn't really anything special about me. I'm just an ordinary girl, well, besides being fairykind. But that's beside the point.

Before anymore depressing thoughts could enter my head, I reached the hedge that separated the rest of the preserve from the shrine. I made my way through the branches until I was standing on the system of boardwalks that surrounded the pond.

Habitually, I glanced over at the island. It had become a habit since returning to Fablehaven, for some reason, I always felt as if it were my only connection to Bracken.

Shaking my head, I glanced around, much progress had been made since the destruction of it. Almost everything was back to normal, but everything looked a whole lot newer.

Fablehaven had been the very first shrine to gain back full power. Rumors had been spread by the fairies that Bracken had requested it, but if he had, why hadn't he come to visit yet?

"Wow Kendra, still not over your long, lost love?"

"Didn't I tell you this morning to leave me alone, Seth."

"Well, yes. But I'm your brother, it's my job to annoy you."

"Whatever. Just leave me alone."

"But I have someone with me who really wants to see you."

"Tell your friends that I'm not in the mood for tennis."

"Fine, I guess I'll just tell Bracken to go away then."

"Wait did you say Bracken?"

"No, I said fern. Of course I said Bracken."

"Oh, well, in that case, I guess you can take me to him."

"And what if he's already here."

Bracken. He was standing right behind Seth at the entrance to the Shrine. How had I not noticed him? Apparently we had been looking at each other for quite some, because the next comment from Seth, well, you can see for you self.

"Okay, I'm just gonna leave you two alone before you corrupt my innocent little mind. Bye."

Yeah, because out of all of us, Seth most definitely as the most innocent mind.

Now, I focused all of my attention on Bracken. I felt like we stared at each other for over an hour until he spoke.

"Hi?"

That is what finally made me explode. I stormed up to him and just screamed in his face.

"You say that you care about me, but don't visit for two whole months?! And it's not only that you don't even call?! Or send me a message or anything?! And-"

"Now-"

"No! No more excuses! You don't see me for a while, and then when you finally decide to show up out of the blue, all you have to say is 'hi'?!"

I then, just as quickly as I walked up to him, walked in the complete other direction.

"Kendra! Kendra, wait."

"What?! What is the excuse now?!"

"I know that these last few months haven't exactly been ideal for you-"

"You can say that again."

"Could you please not interrupt."

I held my hands up in mock surrender. Yet again, I had never really gotten mad at someone like that before, I may have felt that, but I had never really fully expressed my feelings. I guess that is just what Bracken does to me.

"As I was saying, I'm sorry for not being here with you. Trust me, I wanted to ditch all of that Fairykingdom business and come straight here, but I couldn't. Now if you will listen to me, I want to make it up to you. Meet me back here in about five, six hours. I have something planned."

"And if I say no?"

"Then I'm afraid I'll have to kidnap you for the night."

"Fine see you later."

With that, I stormed off towards the house wondering what in the world this boy, unicorn, whatever, has in store for me.
