Colette stepped out of the cab into the burning sunlight. She blinked her ice blue eyes a few time, adjusting them to the light, then continued forward. She looked around and smiled, breathing in the fresh French air. Colette had been born in Paris but she had no memory of it. Colette walked slowly down the road, knowing where she had to go but afraid of what she would find.
"Excusez-moi," Colette said softly to a local vender, "Ou se trouve le cimetiere?" At first the vender said nothing and Colette worried she had said something wrong. After all, she had only taken a few online French classes.
"Mademoiselle," the vender's scratchy voice finally rang out, "You are English, no?" Colette gave the man a small nod. "The cemetery is at the end of this street. You cannot miss it," he said in a thick French accent.
"Merci," Colette said softly with a small but sincere smile and hurried off down the street. The street was very busy and since Colette was so small and slight, she was pushed around quite a bit. she had to fight her way through the crowd but slowly the crowd thinned. At the end of the very long street was an old cemetery. Rusty iron gates rose gloomily around the perimeter of the graveyard. Colette hesitated before pushing the gates open and plunging into the city of the dead.
The crumpled paper in her hand told her hand told her exactly where to go but it didn't matter. She had stared at the sheet so much she had what was written on it memorized but she looked down at it once more.
Enter the gates. Head straight down the path. When you reach the crooked tree, turn left. Continue until the large angel statue. Turn right. Go straight until you see them. You will know. Much Love, Samantha
Colette's hand floated up to touch the crooked tree as she read the note. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and then turned left. She cautiously walked over the graves. Colette looked at each headstone she passed. She always enjoyed cemeteries, she thought they were peaceful. Then there was a crack, like someone stepped on a stick. Colette paused and looked around. No one was around.
Crack. There is was again. Colette stepped back running into a headstone. She caught herself and quickly surveyed the area. Not a soul in sight.
Colette looked down at the headstone. It was a teen's headstone. According to the marker, he would have been just a year older then her. Pain crept into her chest. Just like my brother, Colette thought to herself. But the name and death date were wrong. This boy's name was Liam. Her brother's name was Chandler. But Liam did sound familiar. Colette concentrated heard, trying to think if Samantha had said anything about a Liam. Her efforts came up fruitless. Pushing throught the pain, she continued to her destination.
She reahced the angel statue. The angel was weeping. Colette wondered what it was weeping for. Maybe it was weeping for all these lost souls, never to return to earth, never to see their family again, never to see their daughter grow up. Maybe it was weeping for her. She turned right and walked towards her family's tombstones.
She expected a lot of things, old, ugly, defiled grave markers, emotions, maybe even some lost memory to come back but the one thing she least expected to see were two people standing in front of her family's graves. She was the last remaining member of the Roux family. Who would visit her family's tombs? The only person who cared that much for her was Samantha and she was gone now too. Colette his behind a nearby gravestone and listened, hoping they would give her some kind of clue as to why they were there.
At first, the pair said nothing so Colette just studied them curiously. Their backs were towards her so she could not see their faces but it was obviously a boy and a girl. They were holding hands. The girl was rubbing the boy's back, as if comforting him. The girl had beautiful vurly brown hair and looked like she was in great shape. The boy, a couple of inches taller than the girl, has a strong build and tousled brown hair.
