"Hey! How you doin'. No texts, no calls. You okay?"
Abigail asked worryingly to Mia.
Abigail was Mia's only friend among the soaring population of around three hundred million. Although a pretty nerd like Mia, Abigail was a party freak and today's conversation proves it. And even though she might come from the medicine department, Mia was her sole saviour. Mia always helped her complete the assignments and study for finals. Abigail, in turn, always treated Mia like her little sister.
"I'm fine. Just a bit busy. How about you though?" Mia chirped with a lingering smile.

"Well, I'm good. I mean how can I not be? Brad and Young are throwing a cocktail party this Saturday. And yes your beautiful sister has been invited to grace the accumulation of the uni's acoelomates. You coming though?" Abigail unravelled the news excitedly but saw Mia's smile dissipating.

"Well you see, I never go to parties much. I don't know what they are like; the cocktail ones. I just heard about them being malicious. Also, I don't think I'm invited". Mia tried to reason desperately in order to drive Abigail away.
Cocktail parties have always been indecent to her.
Once she almost got pressed by a random drunkard in the middle of the night in one such party and that memory is enough to blow away the thoughts of attending a cocktail party ever again.

"Don't be such a killjoy. I know you like Brad. And..... well, if you think of ditching this party... I, my dear, am going to tell him everything...and....guess what will happen to you! Of course, you'll be kicked to the benthic zone. Also, about the invitations, please do check the bulletin board". Abigail teasingly threatened Mia.

"Wha-aa-t are y-you saying? I-I don't like anyone, I, no no no no, I don't like Brad... we are not even friends. Please... pretty please don't say anything to anyone. I'll go- I'll go... I promise".

"Your neurons better stick to your words or else...." Abigail threatened, trying to suppress a good goofy grin in the process.

"What's with you and biology now? Always using uncanny words in between? Are you studying too much of these mucks?" Mia asked suspiciously narrowing her eyes at Abigail.

And for no reason at all, both of them broke into a fit of laughter and headed for the bulletin board.

"Sweet Jesus, I've been invited. I mean the whole class has been. But still.... they really want me to come?" Mia sang in a seemingly happy voice, right now unbelieving the moment.

"Yo, bummer... see ya tom!" A tall boy with muscles winked at Mia after racing with the words to catch up to a blonde girl.

Mia blushed to a deep shade of red. It was the first time some guy talked to her in her entire uni life. Abigail, noticing the change in Mia's facial behaviour, whistled at her and bumped her shoulders with her in triumph.

-------------------------------------------------

Saturday has arrived in the blink of an eye. Mia was pacing in her room. A look at her and you can say how nervous she was.
The doorbell rang announcing Abigail's arrival.

"Hola, pretty-face. Are you ready for the night?" Abigail embraced Mia with a bear hug and slouched on the bed.

"What's with the cheery attitude?" Mia scowled at her friend who by then had started to put on a silver short dress.

"Cause... I'm... gonna... meet Brad". Abigail half-whispered half-shouted at Mia with excitement lacing her eyes as she winked with a crooked smile.

After a series of scowling and facepalming, Mia decided to drop the discussion and started putting on a black denim.

"Woah... woah. There girl, what'cha doin'? Are you serious? You wearing denim to a cocktail party?" Abigail folded her arms and raised an eyebrow at a worried Mia.

"But I don't have anything else to wear, plus I feel comfortable". She shrugged and continued dressing.

Without another word, Abigail facepalmed herself.

The two of them, after a series of appreciations and complaints, started towards the Flemming's Mansion.

To say the party was a mess was an understatement. All the red cups littered around the tiled pathways beside the huge pool. Girls and boys grinding against each other, drinking like there's no tomorrow, smoking weeds, getting high, falling in the pool, making out. The music was blaring against the ears; the smell of pork chops filled the air. Mia felt breathless in that sweaty environment.
As she walked by along with Abigail at her side, everybody boo-ed at her for her choice of clothes at a cocktail party. Ignoring them, the two approached Brad, who was engaged in a conversation with his mates. But when turned to face the girls, he broke into a fit of laughter pointing at Mia. Tears stung her eyes but she was not ready to cry the night away.

"You....hahahahaha....you look so.....hahahahaha...gorgeous....hahahahaha....bummer!" He spoke in between laughter.
"Who the hell....hahaha.... invited you to my party? You better have sex with your books. No one here wants you, Ugly Betty". Brad's mate or better bed buddy, Kate, sang along with him. They all were laughing at her. Mia stood there dumbstruck, contemplating to run away. She never felt so belittled before. The only person she developed a crush on, now has started to make her a joke in front of everyone.
Abigail's fingers tightened around Mia's wrist.
"You all have clearly invited her class. So she has come.... what's the problem?" Abigail asked Brad, sternly.

"You see, sugar-tits, we have invited her class...not her. And if you wanna play the mother here, we can have you leave the party along with her. Also,.... baby... (turning to Kate)... isn't she in one of your clubs? Eh! Trying to be elite huh? (Everyone laughs)
But....but...looking at your buttcheeks now, I feel we might need you....(smirks)...So if you wanna be among us you better throw this trash away....(making a mocking face)... do you get me, love?"
Mia felt a knife stab her heart. Embarrassment was a little word to describe her feelings. She wanted to dig up a hole and jump in there.

Hesitating to let go of Mia's arm, Abigail turns around and whispers a 'sorry' to Mia's ears and left her there to weep alone. Mia couldn't take it anymore, she started to run as fast as she could. Her legs were aching but she had to reach home, then she remembered she never had anyone to comfort her. That incident made her feel so small. She even lost her only friend to the world of the snobs.  Tears wouldn't stop running down her cheeks. She wanted to go away from this place. She was a bummer. A nobody to everyone. She wanted to scream and complain so she went to the nearest chapel and dozed off sitting in front of the Almighty.
