Part 1.

Icekit was eagerly jumping around the queens den, as his mother, Goldenfeather, tried to clean his fur.

"Icekit! Would you stand still? You're jumping around like a minnow." Goldenfeather seemed exasperated, but she was just nervous for her kits' big day.

Icekit coughed. "S-sorry mama. I'll-" He started another coughing fit. "I'll stand still now." He said, tiredly. His denmate, Morningkit scoffed. "you better see the medicine cat you sickly runt!" Morningkit's mother, Dawntail, wasn't happy. "Morningkit! Be nicer to your denmate!" She pulled Morning kit away by her scruff.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join me beneath the clanledge!" Shellstar's call made Icekit leap with excitement. this was the moment Icekit had been waiting for! Shellstar called the new apprentices up.
"Dovekit, Heronkit, Ebonykit..."
Icekit trembled with anticipation. this was it...
"Smudgekit, morningkit..."
Icekit looked up at Goldenfeather, who gave him one last nudge before Shellstar finally called his name.
"And, how could I forget, Icekit! All new apprentices join me underneath the clanledge."
Icekit jumped up from where he sat and joined the other apprentices below Shellstar. The clan deputy, nightslash, stood on the clanledge as well. The black-furred deputy gave the soon-to-be apprentices a nod before Shellstar spoke.

"Cats of the clan, it is rare that we have so many kits becoming apprentices at once!"
The clan murmured in agreement.
"But... it is a good thing. We have many warriors that will be willing to teach you all." He looked over at morningkit, "even this one!" The clan let out a 'mroww' of laughter. Icekit laughed to, but he couldn't control his terrible cough that came after. The crowd went silent. Icekit felt humiliated.
Shellstar waited, then began assigning mentors and giving the kits their 'paw' names.
He finally got to Icekit last.
"Icekit, from this moment, until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Icepaw." Shellstar flicked his tail at Spiritfur, a tan tabby tom.
"Spiritfur will be your mentor."
Spiritfur gave Icekit a nudge, but didn't do the ritual of touching noses. It was most likely because he knew Icekit was sick.
Icekit didn't care. He was an apprentice now, and no illness would stop him. Morningpaw looked over at him.
"You'll never be a warrior."
She smirked at him and followed her mentor, hollyfern, toward the apprentices den.
