I don't know how I let Maddie talk me into this. There's only so far I'll go for a friend, even a best one. Prom is definitely that limit.
At prom, Maddie and I loop arms and strut into the lackluster building. If there's a theme, I can't tell. I feel lied to by every television show ever. Loud, garbled rap music blares from the speakers the DJ brought with him. It's not some trendy kid in neon and denim mixing tracks, instead it's a balding man over 40, wearing khakis and a greasy green polo.
Sighing, I shake my head and lead Maddie over to our assigned table. Silver confetti is scattered across a black table cloth. Why did I spend $60 on this?
"I think I'm going to use the bathroom," I tell Maddie.
"Want me to come with?"
"No, it's okay. I'll be back."
The convention center is huge with multiple restrooms. I pass by other proms with kids outside the hall doors. One guy throws a "hey girl" at me and I roll my eyes. Another whistles.
I'm starting to feel upset with myself for choosing to leave the safety of my prom alone. I don't know any of these other schools and security guards are sparse.
I abandon my search and try to make myself small against a planter by the wall. I close my eyes and hum to myself. The humming helps drown out the noise of all the things around me. Except one noise.
"Are you okay?", the noise asks.
"Mmhmmm",I respond, eyes still closed.
"You don't look okay," it continues.
"Looks can be deceiving," I retort. I sigh and open my eyes. Hot. Damn. This guy is superstar material.
"Well, regardless if you're okay or not, can I sit here?", he asks.
"I guess. Not sure why you'd want to sit here though. There's a lot of other spots, many with less people."
"I don't think those spots are having as much fun as this one," he says, eyes gleaming.
"Not a prom fan?", I ask.
"My sister made me come with her."
"Oh,crap. You'd better not leave her alone for long. There's a bunch of weirdos here."
"She's surrounded by a million of her girl friends."
"Ah,"I say. I absently play with the strap on my shoe. Feeling brave and flirty I ask, "do you think your prom has better food than mine?"
"Maybe. Our theme is Rapunzel so there's this royal feast thing set up."
"Sneak me in?"
He raises an eyebrow at me. "We might get in trouble. Could even get kicked out," he says.
"Perfect,"I say and stand up. I hold out a hand for him. He takes it. My stomach does the things I've only read about before. I decide I really like the feel of my hand in his.
"What's your name?", I ask.
"Theo. And yours?"
"I'm Ashley."
"Pleasure to meet you, Ashley. Are you ready for an unforgettable night?"
"I sure hope so."
