London, England 02/14/18
The cab shook violently as the driver took a rough turn. I looked down on the paper, as if waiting for something to change. Every number and letter was written flawlessly, no doubt a formality for her.
Swiftly taking out my phone, I started making the new contact.<YOU ALREADY HAVE THIS CONTACT ON YOUR DEVICE>
My finger pressed the contact, and a familiar text exchange came up.
Hey
Hey
It's been too long.
I know. Sorry.
Miss you.
You're up late.
Or early.
Night owl?
Vampire
:)
This isn't a good idea.
I'm not free.
Things won't end well.
It was nice to get to know
you a little.
I'm sorry.I reread the few words we wrote to each other. Once again, I felt like I was cheating on Mary. If I only had a way to tell my past self to not be an idiot and cherish my moments with her. Wait, what am I talking about? If I could go back to the past, I would stop Mary from dying. I would stop Sherlock's sister from escaping Sherrinford and killing dozens of people. I would tell my past self to stop holding a pointless grudge against my best friend.
The driver pulled up by the hospital, stopping any further regrets. Stepping out, I eyed the gloomy sky above which was reflecting my mood. I quickly made my way up to the laboratory of Bartholomew Hospital and only stopped to say hello to Molly who was going to the same location I was, only her hands were full of lab equipment.
"Give me all that" I reached to get the heavy supplies.
"John, it's alright I've got it" she refused with a smile.
She probably put the equipment away due to the absence of Sherlock and me. Truth be told, I had no idea why Sherlock proceeded to solve this case. Hundreds of cases have been offered to him, yet none were of interest to him. Perhaps no one will puzzle and confuse him more than James Moriarty.
As we were coming near the lab, I opened for her, and got a genuine smile for return. I missed that smile.Sherlock was inspecting something in a microscope, and murmuring.
"Pass me that petri dish"
"Hm?"
"Pass me that petri dish"
The flat container was just a few feet away. I handed him the item with a sigh, and started looking around. Long time has passed since the last time we've been here. I think Molly realized that too, but she was more than ecstatic to be here, working side to side with Sherlock Holmes. She set each beaker and tube with a wide grin and quickly dropped glances on both Sherlock and me.
At one point Sherlock even looked back at her and managed a smile. Something was definitely odd between the two, but I didn't bother asking. In fact all my head was occupied was how did Lyssa get Eurus' number. Surely there had to be logical explanation, and I think I knew what it was, I just didn't want to admit what it was.
But if Eurus was after us again, would she really be sloppy enough to give me the same phone number? No, she wouldn't, she's too smart for that. That thought soothed me, even put a smile on my face.
"John?"
I blinked back to reality where Molly and Sherlock were staring at me. I can't imagine what I must have look like, staring at something blankly and laughing.
"Uh- It's just something Rosy did this morning, but you should have been there"
Sherlock's eyes squinted for just a split second. I've seen that sign far too often. He just realized something. Something just flew into his sociopathic head, and made it's nest there. It wasn't going anywhere.
"Well, we may have just found something." Molly broke the awkward silence between us.
I strided to to the computer to see moving creatures on the screen.
"See that?" Sherlock asked no one in particular. Both Molly and I squinted.
"That's Leishmaniasis, only found in certain parts of the world. Some of those parts are Syria, Middle East, and Serbia"
I could see he wanted us to realize something, something we were quite frankly too stupid to realize. He rose eyebrows and swang his arms in the air.
"Where was the last place I went to before I came back from getting rid of Moriarty's allies?"
"Oh?" Molly managed.
"Oh for God's sakes, John, read the letter"
Once everybody's attention was on me, and Lyssa's letter on my phone screen, I began reading
"Hello Dr. Watson, I understand that your time may be very limited, but-"
"Well not from the beginning!" I paused too look blankly at him. Sometimes he was just an undepictable dick.
"As I was cleaning the kitchen I noticed the foot of the table was cracked. I looked closer, to find the words MISS ME? scratched under it, sloppily, as though with a knife."
"But he's dead" Molly whispered.
"Well obviously!"
"And it's not an ally?"
"Really? You people can't figure this out?"
I gave out a sharp breath and closed my eyes for a few seconds.
"I suppose were just too stupid, aren't we, genius?!"
Dead silence fell upon us as though a blanket. The pressure kept rising as the seconds dragged.
Sherlock finally looked away and started blinking repeatedly. I know this sign too. It's when he realizes he gets too far. Far beyond even my wall of feelings.
Molly's eyes just quietly switched from me to him."I-I'm sorry"
"Oh, don't bother" my words spat out.
I quickly gathered my coat which I set on a table nearby, and slammed the door behind me.
By the time I was outside it was raining again, and without second thought, my shaking fingers called the number I thought I'd never call again.
