It is now 3am and I cannot sleep. I can hear him beating her. Every punch, every kick and the worst is that I can't do anything to stop it. Last time I got involved and took my mum out of his claws he ended up beating her even more saying that she was turning me against him. I know if I go there and take her away from my father she's going to suffer even more than she is right now.
"Don't you dare try to run away from me, Denise!" He shouts and right after I hear a bump and my mum scream in pain.
Next morning I got out of bed earlier to go check on her. I know that she normally gets up at 05:30am to prepare his things so he can leave to work at six. As soon as he left the house I made my way downstairs and looked for my mother. When I found her my eyes instantly got submerged by tears. She got bruises all over her delicate body, her lower lip had a few cuts and the side of her left eye was turning purple, probably from the punches that monster threw at her.
I can't find any right words to say so I just walk up to her hugging her carefully not to hurt her as the tears fall down my cheeks.
"I'm going to get some ice and the cream for your lip." I say breaking the hug. She nods and goes sit on the sofa. I take some ice from the freezer, wrap a cloth around it and get the cream from the top cabinet in the kitchen. Once I'm sat in front of her I apply the cream on her cuts and hold the ice against her pale skin.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" She asks, making me realize that I'm not only staring at her but I also have a smile on my face.
"I'm gonna take you out of here mum." I state and she gives me a confused look.
"I got a new job, another one. Father won't even know that I have it. I'll keep giving him my salary from the café and save the salary from this other job to buy a house just for the two of us." I explain
"Abbie isn't two jobs too much for you and what is this new job anyways?" She asks concerned.
"Mum, I can do it, don't worry about me and I'm going to be working in a clothes shop." I lied, I hate lying to my mum but I can't tell her that I'm going to be working in a pub at night.
"I'm just worried you won't be able to live your life because of me." She says with teary eyes.
"Don't be. I'll still be living my life. You have nothing to worry about." I reassure her.
"Oh darling, thank you so much, I'm so proud of you." She says hugging me tight. I went back upstairs to get ready, said goodbye to my mum and started walking to work. The bakery door was already open when I got there, meaning Luke had arrived before me. We're normally the ones that open the place in the place in the morning. Luke is my best friend, we've known each other since we were kids. He knows about everything and he's always there when I need him.
"You look tired. Did you sleep at all last night?" He asked concerned as soon as he laid eyes on me.
"No." I said looking down at the floor remembering last night's events, it wasn't long until I felt two strong arms around me. My head was resting on his chest and his chin was resting on my head.
"Did he..?" I nod against his chest and he hugs me tighter. At this point I was trying my best not to break down. Clients must be here in a few minutes, I don't want to look even worse than I already do. We stood there hugging for a couple of minutes, none of us talking just enjoying each other's presence. When the clients started to arrive I put my best fake smile on. I would give them their orders and tell them to have a good day. I even had small conversations with some of them. After a while I remembered how I haven't told Luke about the new job, I completely forgot to tell him!
