Chapter Six
Five minutes later, I found myself in Jake’s car. He didn’t look quite as angry as he did earlier, I noted in relief. I studied his face as he drove, trying to figure out what he was thinking. A small muscle was twitching at the corner of his temple. Okay, maybe I was wrong about him being calmer. Maybe he was just hiding it better. I went back to looking out the window.
“Okay, Jane. What the hell happened back there?”
Well, crud. I decided that there was several ways that I could handle this. I could tell him the truth, which he wouldn’t believe. Or I could tell him part of the truth, which he still wouldn’t believe. Or I could just flat out lie. The third choice was starting to look really good.
“I don’t know.”
He glanced over at me. “Cut the crap, Jane. You weren’t exactly shocked to find me standing there in my boxers. Try again.”
“Maybe it was a hallucination brought on by working too many hours and drinking bad coffee.” That was a lame explanation but I was hoping that he would go with that.
“A hallucination? Is that the best that you can do? I have the ring in my pocket. There are whisker burns on your neck.” Without taking his eyes off of the road, he reached over and brushed the area lightly with his thumb. I sucked in my breath sharply and tried not to lean into his touch. “Something happened in my office. Like I said, try again.”
I sighed. Well, so much for option number three. Maybe I would try option number two. “Okay. Your clothes disappeared. Your fiancée walked in on us.” I quickly glossed over the part where I had shamelessly thrown myself into his arms. “Maybe there isn’t a rational explanation for it. It was a mistake. It happened. Can’t we just forget about it?”
“I can’t.” He quickly pulled the car over to the side of the road, ignoring the honks from the annoyed motorists behind him.
“What are you doing?” I asked him in a squeaky voice as I tried not to panic.
“Making another mistake.” He unfastened his seat belt and reached for me with a determined glint in his eyes.
“Jake.” I pulled away from him until my back bumped up against the passenger door. I knew that if he touched me again, I would be lost. My panties were still in a twist from the last time that he had touched me. Literally. “This isn’t a good idea. I work for you. This will only complicate things.”
“Jane, things are already complicated.” Then he kissed me.
I made a noise low in my throat and leaned into him while my mind tried to tell me why this wasn’t a good idea. It was no use. My body was ignoring all the logical things that my mind was trying to tell me. And, when his hands began to caress my cheek, my mind shut down and let my body take over.
As if Jake could feel my resistance beginning to melt away, he immediately moved to take advantage. He released my face long enough to push my hands to his shoulders, then returned to caressing my cheek. My hands began to explore his shoulders, hesitantly at first, then with more enthusiasm as I let the sensations that Jake was creating carry me away.
