Alive

You told me once,

When I was at my breaking point,

That I needed to fall in love with being alive.

That’s when I stopped looking at the cross faces when expectations weren’t met,

I stopped caring about the pills by my bed.

I thought about the things that make me happy,

And realised that the freckles under your eyes,

Are like the stars painted across the sky.

I hopped on every crunchy leaf,

And heard it crackle under my feet.

I stood underneath the orange leaved tree,

And watched the leaves twirl around,

Until they softly kissed the ground.

I told people the little things they needed to know;

How beautiful they looked when lights at night,

Glistened in their eyes,

And that they had a delightful smile.

I told myself that life was about letting go,

And holding onto myself a bit more.

I learnt to love the little things in life,

Like skateboarding at twilight,

And making our own constellations at night.

We set the fireworks off when the sky went dark.

We watched the sparks fly high,

And come crashing down like rain.

You gleamed at me,

As I pointed to the lanterns aglow,

And waved the aeroplanes goodbye,

And that is when,’

I truly, fell in love with being alive.
