I woke up screaming. Another nightmare. I've been getting them ever since my powers came in. Some call it a blessing, I call it a curse. Sure the powers come in handy sometimes but, they come with a price. Hunters. They're always searching for us. Yup, it's not just me. There's others. The thing is, we each have no idea who the others are or where they are. But together, we're powerful. Our powers aren't random. We inherited them. I got them from my great great grandmother. We can't tell anyone though, not even our family members. So how did I find out? I had a vision. My great great grandmother came to me in a dream and explained everything to me. Usually she comes to me at least 3 times a year, checking up on me. But no matter what, she always appears on my birthday.
She's been helping me to track down the others but unfortunately, she's as clueless as I am when it comes to knowing the location or identity of the others. The only difference is that she can sense when one of them is near. That's how I found my best friend, Aaliyah. She died three years ago. She's the reason why I'm still alive. She sacrificed her self so I could get away. I am still haunted by her screams as the hunters tortured and killed her. Ever since then, I've been determined to destroy every and any hunter that crosses my path. I make them scream and suffer just like they did to Aaliyah.
Just thinking about them makes my eyes go red. Yeah, our eyes are like our mood rings. They reflect our emotions. That's usually how we find each other. When humans see our eyes change, they just think that they're seeing things it. But when my kind sees it, it's like an alarm goes off in our heads telling us that we found one of us. Usually we are able to deceive hunters, but we still have to be careful with our powers. Hunters can destigue themselves so well that we can't really tell them apart from the humans. That's why we can't trust anyone but our kind and of course our protectors.
Since birth, each one of us is assigned a protector. Our protectors watch over us secretly and help keep hunters away from us. They reveal themselves to us on our 16th birthday. Some of us don't get our powers straight away. Some receive them at birth while others receive them in their twenties. The later you get your powers the more safer you are. If you don't get your powers than you don't get your aura. Your aura let's the others realize who you are. The higher in rank, the more powerful of an aura you have. Believe it or not, I'm a princess. Which is odd since I'm not really the "princessy" type. It still shocks me when my kind addresses me by saying "your highness". That crap is pretty creepy.
Pulling myself out of my thoughts, I took a shower and got ready for the day. Brushing my hair, I took a quick look at myself in the mirror. I had a hour glass figure with perfectly tanned skin to match and a height of 5'5. I normally had hazel eyes with light brown wavy hair that had purple streaks through it.
Nodding my head in approval, I changed into a long sleave purple shirt that hugged my curves and faded blue short shorts with a matching sleeveless jean jacket. I threw on my favorite purple converses and my white beanie. Doing my usual make up routine, which included putting on eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss; I put on my pilot sunglasses and grabbed my keys. Heading towards the kitchen I heard whispering voices. Once I entered I saw my protector talking to what seemed like another protector with a man sitting between them looking bored. Everything got quiet once they noticed my presence.
"Good Morning sweetie" my protector, Angie, said with a glint in her eyes. Uh oh, that's not good.
"Morning Aunt Ang" I said back with no doubt, curiosity in my voice.
Ever since my parents died, I've been living with my protector. She've insisted that I treated her like family, hence why I call her my Aunt. Flicking her eyes towards the man scrolling through his iPhone, she smirked.
"Kenzie, meet Emmanuel and his protector Edwin. Emmanuel and Edwin, meet Mackenzie."
The other proctector, which I assumed to be Edwin, smiled towards me and then clearing his throat when he saw that Emmanuel wasn't paying attention. The man finally lifted his head to acknowledge my presence, and my breath literally got caught in my throat. There weren't words that could describe his perfection. He had chocolate brown eyes, perfectly tanned skin, with dirty blond hair that had red tips. He wore a well-fitted black long sleaved v-neck that was rolled up to his elbows and showed his six pack. He wore beige cargo shorts with black vans.
He smirked and stood up while his eyes held amusement. He walked over to me before stopping a couple inches away from me and saying," Hey beautiful. The name's Emmanuel but you-" He paused and took my hand and placed a soft, lingering kiss on it before continuing. "Can call me Manny." He finished. I blushed, which I rarely did, before stuttering, "H-Hi, Im Mackenzie." He finally let go of my hand and smiled down at me, since he towered me with his height of 6'3.
Finally breaking our starring session, I looked around the room and saw Angie smirking at me while Edwin rolled his eyes but stilled smiled. Looking back at Manny, I barely heard Angie say, "Mackenzie, meet our new neighbors. They're one of us." And with that I fainted.
