If I was gone would you remember me? Would you mourn over me on my death bed or would you try and forget me like the rest of them? My life was perfect before The Thing happened. Before it I was happy. I was eight with short blonde hair and my family was happy. But then they came and took her from me. And my life hasn't been the same since.

The train had passed but it wasn't ours to catch. We had gone to the city to see the fair but come back with no prizes. Today had been a long day for me. And my feet were aching. But mom had decided that instead of a cab we took the train. I always hated taking the train. Here in New York anything could happen and no one would no till the morning because the no one lived near a train station. If you screamed, no one would hear it. But mom said it was mandatory. She said that when I was older I would have to be brave and take the train to get to work. I really didn't care what she said. I still hated them.
"I know you hate taking the train but it'll be here soon. I promise" She ran her hand down my cheek to soothe the nerves that were there. I guess it was obvious since I was looking nervously around for the big hunk of metal transportation to zoom pass but come to a halt and take me home.
"I told you we should have caught a cab. Brooklyn isn't that far from Central park." I tried to be serious and prove a point but obviously failed when she clutched her stomach in laughter.
"Honey, if you knew how much a cab costs to go from central park to Brooklyn you would have a heart attack. I would have to call Ralph and god knows no one wants that." Ralph was a cab driver from moms past. Before she met dad Ralph had men my mom's one and only. He would give her free cab rides around New York when they were together. Now he owns a cab driving service and mom is married to dad with two kids. I looked up at her as she remembered the times they were together.
At first it looked like she remembered them fondly till a shiver ran down her body. At that moment, I had doubled over in laughter. She always knew how to make me laugh. I took her hand and she had twirled me around several times to make me laugh harder. Suddenly, she tensed. Then out of nowhere two teenage boys came into view. One was standing a few feet away from us off to the right and the other was just coming up the stairs that led to the platform. Both had on jean vests and black hoodies under. Also one had on ripped up jean pants while the other had on what looked like black track pants with zipper cuts on the sides. Mom had stopped twirling me and muttered "Get behind me" as the thugs came closer in view. I could hear the train coming and had a feeling that I wouldn't be the one to board it. The two guys came as close as moms face when one yelled...
"Give me your money." That one was tugging one mom and I's bags when one came to mom's ear. I heard only parts of it cause of the train but I knew he was threatening her. Then the train's noise stopped and my hearing was at grade A once more.
"What's an old lady like you doin' in a place like this? Your kind don't belong down here. We's got business that need to be handle." I could hear the harshness in his voice and the thick accent didn't do so good hiding itself either. He was from Queens. I remember hearing about a gang that was reported there. That's when I saw it. The scar on the thugs hand as he reached for the pole. The train had come and stopped but mom hadn't moved. Looks like we were calling Ralph after all.
The doors closed a few seconds after the thugs had entered. I looked at mom but she was trying to remember the guys face. She needed something to tell the police. But she never got to because the doors opened again and they shot her in the head.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! MOMS PLEASE GET UP!!!!!! MOM???? MOOOOOOOM???" I tried to turn around and take my anger out on the two people who had taken her life but when I did the train was gone. They had gotten away. I ran to her. She lay limp but her eyes were open. She was bleu eyed and had full eyelashes. But they were pooling blood from her head. I shut her eyes then ran for help.
As I run down the stairs and in to the warm summer air I stop. What if they came back? What if while I was gone they took her body and buried her six feet underground... no. I couldn't let my imagination run wild right now. So there I was. Running down the streets of New York City till I reached a gas station. I asked for the phone and dialed 911. As I reported back to the nice lady on the other end I started to breakdown. My body ached from the running and my head was spinning from the previous events of the night. Then the phone line ended and I was back with her. I tried to pick up her hand and place it on my cheek like she did only hours ago to calm me but I quickly pulled away at the icy touch. She was gone. My mom was gone and I just stood there and waited for the police to come. I hated myself for not being brave enough. I hated myself for not convincing her to let us take a cab. I hate me. I was the reason she was dead. Then they came and pulled me off of her. I kicked. I thrashed. But stopped when I realized it was my dad's friend from work. He was on the police force. Then dad came up from the stairs and all the tears that were held in came down like Niagra Falls. He tried to talk soothing words to me but I couldn't control the water works. We were going down the steps and the last thing he said to me was... "I will never leave you. I love you." Then things went too dark to remember.
