"Change of plans." El-Shafei bangs the door open. He releases my hands from the headboard and cuffs them together. The chain is fairly long; there's some slack in it. "Hold this."
He shoves something into my hands. He's left the blindfold on, but I can feel it's newspaper. Dates. Proof of life.
"Look straight ahead."
A cameraphone shutter sound. El-Shafei yanks my wrists back against the headboard and cuffs them back to it.
"I'll give him something to eat," says the woman in Lebanese. "I don't want to go out there."
He promises her she's safe. They're in trouble.
He walks out, to take her watcher post, presumably.
"You said I was going home..." My voice sounds far away and I know I'm going to die here.
"You're still going home," the woman hisses quietly to me, urgently. "Eat, though. Drink. It might be all you get for a couple of days. You did it before, you can do it again."
