I calmly walked into the office to receive my late pass-- for the third time this week. "Late again, Miss Evans?" The assistant principal, Mr. Rodgers, mumbled with a sigh and an eye roll. "I won't even ask why."
Shrugging innocently and crossing my arms, I replied, "Didn't feel like coming."
"You decided for three hours that you would show up?" He narrowed his eyes. "I wish you would've stayed home."
I snatched my late pass out of his hands and walked to... Third period? Yeah, third period. I inwardly sighed and walked in.
English.
"You actually showed up for a lesson, Olivia?" Mrs. Parker asked, with a grouchy, forty-seven-year-smoker voice. Truth is, I love E.L.A. as a class, I just hate this jerk-of-a-teacher.
"You actually know how to speak in a regular tone?" I snapped back with an attitude and sat in my seat.
Mrs. Parker mumbled something, probably profanity, under her breath, and continued her lesson about Oxford-Coma and its importance, whilst I drifted into a peaceful sleep.
"Olive! Olive!" A cheerful voice shouted.
I smiled brightly and looked down at the beaming, glow-like face of my sister. "Yes, Sarah?"
"I want to be a good girl like you! But momma says I'm a klutz and I break things too easily..." Sarah looked down sadly.
"Keep that chin up! Just 'cause you're clumsy doesn't mean you're a bad girl!" I lightly punched her shoulder.
Sarah quickly brought her head up. "You mean it?" I nodded.
She hugged my legs tightly and smiled as wide as a crescent moon. "You're the best, Olivia."
The bell rang as I snapped my head up and drowsily walked to fourth period. Many people waved and some back away.
I hate this goddamn reputation of mine. I thought. Why can't I just be normal?
Slowly-paced, I walked into History, my absolute favorite class. But, I could never show that to anyone. Besides Tyler, of course.
Tyler could write a book about me. He's my best friend. Smart, funny, athletic, bad-ass, attractive, kind, romantic, the whole nine-yards. And, the best part was, he's my boyfriend.
When I walked in, he smiled at me so sweetly. I felt myself heat up into a blush. That's one thing I can never hide, my tomato-red face when it comes to Tyler.
I winked at him and he rolled his eyes, smiling. "That's so unlike you." He mouthed.
I narrowed my eyes at him and mouthed, "Hush, I can't help it in school."
Sadly, I put my head down and fell into another sleep.
I looked at the time on my watch. "Sarah, we'd better go home. The park is going to close and mom is probably worried."
Sarah moaned. "But why? We're having so much fun!"
I sighed. "You know why, she'll freak out if I don't have you home. I'll be in trouble, and so will you."
"Fine." She huffed. "But YOU have to hold my hand."
"Whatever you say." I laughed.
Hand and hand, Sarah and I skipped on the side walk home. The crossing guard wasn't at the cross-walk. Strange.
"Oh, Olivia! I can show you that I can cross the street with no one's help!" She smiled widely. "You go first, so you can see from the other side."
"Okay, sure." I looked both ways and crossed the street. "Your turn."
Sarah looked down at the newly-painted lines and began walking. "I'm doing it!" She yelled happily.
I smiled.
But that smile soon faded.
Honk! Honk!
"Look out
SARAH!" I shouted extremely loud.
Everyone in the classroom erupted in giggles, besides Tyler, and I glared at each of them. They soon quieted down.
"Had a nightmare while you were napping? Mid-Terms are coming up, Miss Olivia. Please pay attention."
"Yes, ma'am." I mumbled.
Why couldn't I stop her? I thought sadly. Why can't I be good for her sake? Why was it her, and not me?
Before I knew it, I blacked out.
