Chipped
I walk to the hospital elevators and press the up button. My mom follows behind like a lost puppy. I could see the anxiety in her eyes. I didn't know why she got so nervous it was our second time here for, the big C. I call cancer the big C. It's less frightening then the word cancer. I clear my thoughts as I hear a little ding and the elevator door opens.
* Later that day *
"You shouldn't be in the house all day" Rachel, my best friend, say. Rachel has decided I've become distant lately and need to go to the mall. She's the only person, other than my mom, who knows about the big C. We pause in our tracks to let me speak to. "Rachel, it's really nice of you to do this but I'm fine. I just like being inside. I always have," She purses her lips then looks down. "One more store?" she says softly. I smile and roll my eyes in a playful way. "Sure." She shines a smile my way.
"You're going to love this store!" she says with that tone in her voice that makes me feel like I'm in for a treat. "Were here" she squeals. I take in a huge breath and put my hand over my mouth. It was the old toy store me and Rachel went to all the time when where little. She smiles and runs inside, I follow behind her. "It's just like it was when we were 5!" I say proudly. I look around at all the toys that neatly staked on shelf. "Can you believe it's been 11 years?" I say. "I know." Rachel says in awe of all the toys that are still here from when we were little. "Excuse me?" a male voice says behind me. I turn to see a boy about my age with blond and brown eyes. He was sort of gorgeous. "Can I help you with anything?" he says. He clearly works here so I think for a second. "Does Paul by any chance still work here?" Paul was a middle aged man who work here when we were kids. The blond hair boy freezes for a second and say "Um... two years ago... Paul died of cancer. I froze and Rachel looked at me. "Were you close?" he question. "No, but we had a lot in common." I say. The big C. I crawled down and sat on the old green carpet. "We should go." Rachel says, but I just sat there all curled up in a ball and started crying.
