It was around 3 in the afternoon where I stood in front of my daughter's school to picker her. It was a Friday as well, so surely, she's excited to come home. I stood in the front where all of the other parents were and waited for her arrival where she came with her best friend, Sooyeon, hand in hand before she spotted me from the crowd.
"Mom!" I heard her littler first grade voice. She looked over at Sooyeon, gave her a hug, and departed from her before she ran to me. "Mom! We have to come back later!" she said with glee. I raised an eyebrow at her.
"Why?" I asked.
"There's gonna be a fair later and I want to go! I know you and dad aren't doing anything later right? Please?" she begged me. How could I say no to such a sweet face. I smiled and nodded before she jumped and gave me a hug around me legs.
At home, my husband, Namjoon, was in his office working on his computer. It was his natural habitat, but his world becomes colorful when our one and only daughter together steps in. "Dad! I'm home!" shouted Yoonji. She ran up to him and climbed on his lap where she was happily hugged tight in her father's arms.
"Yoonji! How's school? Are you studying well?" he would aslways ask her while he takes off his glasses.
"Of course dad!"
"Honey," I said from the doorframe with my arms crossed over my chest, "little Yoonji has something to say."
"Oh? What is it?" Namjoon said, this time looking at Yoonji.
"Dad! My school is hosting a fair later in the evening. Will you go with me? But you look busy, mom will you take me?" she asked as she looked at me.
"Yoonji, you're more important. Let's go together as a family. I want to see you have fun and enjoy yourself!" said Namjoon. Of course, I was happy to hear that the three of us were going. Even if we were just there for an hour, how else could I spend my family day today anyway?"
The fair starts at exactly 6. Namjoon, Yoonji and I already arrived and waited in the car for other parents to come and attend. "Are you excited Yoonji?" asked Namjoon. I looked over on the rear view mirror where I see me little girl smiling with her two big teeth showing. Her silky black hair was up in high piggy tails and she wore her favorite unicorn jacket with purple jeans. She looked so bright, she's my daughter.
A few more minutes passed by and we all got out of the car and lined up to get our bands. $5 for each band? A bit pricey, but for them, it's priceless. I paid with cash without letting Namjoon do it. "Yoonji! I'll play all of these games with you ok? We're gonna win a lot!" Namjoon said happily when he put the band over Yoonji's wrist.
"Dad, be careful. You might break something and mommy might have to pay for it" she said innocently. I couldn't help but laugh in the back, it's quite true that any object my husband touches it tends to break. Namjoon chuckled under his breath as well then took Yonji's hand as they went around the campus. I was next to Yoonji as well, walking alongside them.
"Yoonji! Check out the Taekwondo show!" Namjoon pointed out. They hurriedly ran to field where I caught up behind them. They sat side by side in the front and watched with glee as the volunteering children showed their moves. "Woah! I bet you dad can do that!" said Namjoon and I could tell Yoonji was excited. She clapped every time a cool move popped up or she would say "wow~" whenever something amazing caught her eye.
Next, we fell in line to get balloons for Yoonji. Her favorite is especially a little puppy, but I was a little surprised to see my husband wanting a blue butterfly as well. "Honey, aren't you a little too old to have a balloon animal?" I asked. Namjoon smiled at me while he shook his head.
"Anything Yoonji wants to do, I'll do it too" he said. So he did. He got his blue butterfly while Yoonji got a purple dog. Up next, they went inside of the cafeteria where there were bouncy houses that took up half of the space. "Aw," said Namjoon.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm actually too big for these..." Namjoon said. Both Namjoon and I looked at Yoonji who already took her shoes off before meeting up with Sooyeon who was in front of one of the bouncy houses.
"Yoonji! You came!" she shouted. Yoonji quickly ran up to Sooyeon before they took off and slid down the slide and competed against each other in the other inflatable playground.
Namjoon and I walked over to the stage where we stood side by side, my hands over his arms and my head resting on his shoulder. "She's beautiful," said Namjoon while we both watched our daughter play.
"She's precious," I replied.
"She's more than that. She's our little girl. I don't want her to grow up, I want her to be like this forever. What if we had something like that? We have our own Neverland where we never grew up but we were still together" asked Namjoon.
"Then we wouldn't have Yoonji," I replied. Namjoon nodded but smiled.
"No matter what decision we make, I'm happy doing them with you. Whatever is best for Yoonji and our other future kids, I want to make them with you. You're amazing," Namjoon said to me as he leaned his head on top of mine. He caressed my hands and brought one of them up to a kiss. "Yoonji is amazing. I wonder if this is how proud fathers really feel."
"I'm a proud mother myself. With the family that I have, my supportive husband next to me and my beautiful, hardworking daughter that I enjoy watching her grow, I can't ask for a better family when I already have the best" I replied.
"Mom! Dad! Look what Sooyeon taught me!" shouted Yoonji from the center of the room. She put her hands above her head, leaned to one side, and did a complete and graceful cartwheel and ended it with her beautiful smile.
"That's my Yoonji," said Namjoon.
