If you were thinking that this story should start with the opening: "Once upon a time," then you'd be wrong. This story is surrounded by lies, greed, tragedy, loss, madness, war, and death, as well as truth, hope, peace, and love... but only in the end. If you, dear reader, still wish to continue to read this story, then wish the heroine of this tale well for as long as she lives. Our story begins in a quaint town in England called Cheddar, where the local police force were dispatched to a call about a homicidal killer, disguised as a Catholic priest, killing a random amount of people and having them rise again as walking corpses. The main protagonist, a young 21 year old virgin female named Mary Ann Harker received the information via wireless radio walkie talkie. Thank whoever invented police scanners. Her living complex was small, due to her rent, cramped with appliances, furniture, and provisions, and having it be only a one story building wasn't much help either. Anyways, she was packing her makeshift utility belt with her dad's hunting knife and M-19 handgun that only held 12 rounds per magazine as well as clipping her walkie talkie radio on her belt. She threw on a dark colored flannel over her white tank top, fastened the belt around her bootcut denim jeans, and tied on her converse Chuck Taylor shoes while fixing her jet black hair so it wasn't over her magenta eyes. She walked out through the backyard and made her way through the woods. From there, she tried her best to not trip and bump into anything. Luckily, the moon was full and bright enough for her to see a clear path. As she made her way towards a clear trail, something grabbed her ankle. She gasped and quickly looked down, finding a piece of shrubbery caught with her pant leg. Sighing, she unfastened the tiny branches and brushed off the dirt and leaves.
'Man, I'm a bit jumpy for some reason... The last thing I need is something scaring me,' her mind spoke.
She heard a branch snap and looked to her left. There, she saw a cop slowly staggering towards her. Maybe it was the dark playing tricks on her or... he looked like he was just killed. But then, how is he still moving?! The jugular was ripped clean out! It wasn't possible at all for this to happen!
'No way... that's nuts! He's dead. But- how... this isn't normal. It's not real. It can't be real!'
She pulled out her gun and cocked it. Then, from out of nowhere, a hand struck straight through the walking corpse. After seeing it explode into ashes, she could faintly see the outline of a man only 20 ft away from her. He was all dressed in a red overcoat with a matching wide-brimmed hat, his gloves bore a pentagram of some sort, a red tie of sorts over his charcoal grey suit, and his amber tinted glasses hid his eyes.
"Beautiful night, isn't it?" he asked, his deep voice sent chills down Mary Ann's spine, "It's especially beautiful, of course... if you happen to be a bloodsucker."
After hearing that, she aimed and pulled the trigger. She just missed his chest and the bullet flew right to his left shoulder. She heard him chuckle softly as the hole mended itself and healed as if it was never there.
"You're not human," she said before finally having the courage to run off deeper into the forest.
"Why say that? Would you still shoot me if I was?" he questioned to himself as he watched her run, his crimson red eyes peeking through the lenses as he smiled.
She kept running until she bumped into someone or something, sending her butt to the ground. About a foot away, she saw a police girl scrambling to her feet in a panic. She recognized her immediately from her features.
"Seras?!" she yelled, a bit relieved and worried at the same time, "What are you doing out here?"
"I could ask you the same thing," she warned before she grabbed her hand, "We have to go, now!"
They both ran the same way Mary Ann came from. She had never seen her this scared in her life. Both girls met about five years ago while she was on an assignment to arrest a escaped lunatic posing as a doctor in a hospital in Birmingham, where Mary Ann was placed in for some time under some certain circumstances. They arrested the man, but Seras found her in his office, drugged and afraid. She helped pick up the pieces and they immediately became friends. After being explained that Seras' coworkers were killed by that maniac of a vicar, they kept running until they found themselves surrounded by more of the walking dead.
"There's no use in running anymore!" they heard the killer announce from behind as he held them hostage.
She saw her friend trying to fight back, but he was too strong as he threatened to violate and kill her in front of her friend for being rebellious.
"Go to hell!" she shouted, trying to break free.
"I've already been, my dear..." he reassured, "You both will find it quite lovely very soon."
Mary Ann wanted to scream, yell, defend herself and the only person she considered as a dear friend, but she couldn't. Then, from out of nowhere, all of the undead turned towards what was in front of her. It was the same man she shot and ran away from. The one all dressed in red.
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?" the vicar questioned as he let both girls go.
"Your death, of course," he answered, smiling, a pair of fangs peeking from his exposed teeth.
"Really? "My death?" God, this is just pathetic... Kill him, my ghouls."
With the snap of his fingers all of them drew out their guns and fired. He just stood there and took the shots as they tore his body apart into a bloody mess. Both Mary Ann and Seras watched in horror as it happened.
"Was that really the best that you could do?!" the assailant boasted, cackling, "Guess he was all talk and no show."
'Come on...' she wanted to urge the lifeless man, 'Come on, get up. Get up!'
Both her and the police girl heard him laughing as he rose back up from the ground, darkness surrounding him as he was revived. He stared right at his target and pulled out a 13 mm silver pistol while taking aim before firing. Engraved on both sides read Hellsing AM 454 Casull AUTO and with each fire he shot, the ghouls were immediately destroyed and disintegrated into dust until only the clergyman of a vampire is all that's left.
"No way..." Seras remarked, astonished, "Those bullets are killing them in an instant."
"The silver cross that once belonged to the Manchester Cathedral was melted down into liquid in order to create these 13 mm exploding shells, so nothing I shoot ever gets back up again," the stranger explained as he reloaded a new magazine.
"He's not human..." Mary Ann whispered to herself, not taking her eyes off of him.
"I don't understand!" both girls heard the priest, "Tell me, why are you fighting to protect these humans?! We're on the same side, aren't we?"
"Hmph... I have my own reasons to being on the opposite side of the board, you sick cockroach" he answered, releasing the safety, "But that story is not one that you'll be listening to anytime soon."
Before Mary Ann could react, Seras was grabbed from behind and used as a shield. She saw the fear in her eyes as tears started to swell up while her assailant warned their rescue as well as about the danger he was invoking and begged for his own kind of help, "Not one more step or any sort of movement. The girl's one of the last survivors. Don't you want to save this one? At least be reasonable, here. Besides, I'm not asking for much... You can't even look the other way."
"My dear, are you a virgin?" they both heard the crimson man ask Seras, leaving both girls in shock and embarrassment, "Police girl, answer me if you want my help."
"Y-yes! I am, and so is my friend!" she answered.
And in a split second, she was shot through the right side of her chest, causing her captor to let go as the bullet also made contact with him. Seeing this caused a trigger in Mary Ann's brain as she unsheathed her father's silver knife and stabbed the bastard through the heart from behind and out the other side, immediately piercing the heart. His blood splattered all over her white shirt and flannel before turning into dust. Her grip loosened as she fell to her knees next to Seras. She didn't know if she wanted to cry in fear or laugh in insanity because of what she had done. She was about to feel sick to her stomach, almost nauseous. Seeing her best friend bleeding with a fatal injury made her remember her guardian dying before her eyes, then everything started fading away as a sentence echoed in her head from a distant memory: "You've done so well. Now, go forth, my child... and make hell pay for what these monsters have done..."
The man dressed in red caught her before she landed on the ground and saw the carving on the knife's handle, spelling out her name. He carefully took it and drew it back in it's sheath. Looking at Mary Ann and Seras, who was now slowly dying but still fighting for her life, he smiled and wondered: 'It certainly is a pleasant night... Truly memorable.'
The first thing Mary Ann saw all around her was a deserted old cemetery, 'Where am I...? Is this a dream?' she thought.
In front of her was a freshly dug grave with an unmarked headstone, and inside was a coffin with no name engraved on the lid that was barely open. She leaned in to get a better look at who was inside, and it almost looked she could reach inside to open it a little more. Her hand was shaking and her breathing was a little fast, she could almost hear her heartbeat ringing in her ears. Soon enough, the corpse bursted out of it's grave and stared at her.
"'Ello poppet!" it shouted in a mutated and thick cockney accent.
She screamed and made a run for it. While trying to lose whatever was chasing her, she ran into someone. And not just someone, the man in red.
"Mary Ann Harker... what's it feel like to be reborn again?"
'Reborn? Wait, what?!' she wanted to question.
"You remind me so much of her."
'Like who?!'
Then, she found herself dressed in a white Victorian dress. This dream was starting to be too real! He grabbed her waist and slowly leaned in, smiling.
"I swear that I will never let you go again, my precious bride."
'God, please... Wake up!'
She saw his face zooming in closer to either kiss her of bite her neck. She shut her eyes and screamed as everything went white. She woke up and shot upright from a bed, panting, and in a cold sweat. Unsure of where she was now or how she got there, she checked her body for any injuries. Luckily, there were none.
'What a relief,' she placed at ease with her mind.
Then another bad feeling came creeping in, a feeling like someone was in the room with her. It couldn't be Seras because it would be different. She screamed again as she saw that it was the stranger again. His hat and glasses were off so she could see his black hair and red eyes.
'What the shit is happening?!'
"How are you feeling, my dear?" he asked, sitting on the bed.
"Uh, f-fine, I guess," she answered extremely unsure now.
"Such a relief. I was too tempted to kiss my sleeping beauty awake."
"Huh? What?!"
"You're very lucky to still be alive and human, unlike the police girl."
'Police... girl? Seras?!'
She then remembered what happened and went straight for an attack on him. He retaliated and pinned her back on the bed, towering over her.
"You're quite a handful, I'll give you that," he chuckled.
"What the hell is so funny, you murderer?"
"A murderer? Me?"
"I saw you! You shot my best friend! You killed her right in front of me...!"
"And you killed the vampire that threatened both of your lives. So, I guess that makes you one as well. Besides, I had to shoot through her right lung to reach his heart and I gave her a choice to either die or become my draculina. If it was you instead, I would've still done the same thing... and what a lovely vampire you would've been."
"Okay, I think I might puke a little from that."
"Alucard, get off her," another voice chimed in, "I could care less if she's reckless. She's a lady, please show some manners."
"Forgive me, my master," he obeyed as he let her go and climbed off the bed.
She sat back up and looked at her open door. There stood a formal woman dressed in a dark military green suit with a small cross adorned on her tie, straight platinum blonde hair down to her hips, a pair or circular rimmed glasses over her deep blue eyes, and smoking a rich branded cigar. She looked like she could be 29 or maybe 30 years old. Man, it must have made Mary Ann feel like a child. Beside her was an elderly man dressed in a butler's attire and his dark hair with tied back with only a few strands over his silvery-gray eyes and wore a monocle on the left side of his face.
"Are you feeling alright?" the formally dressed woman asked, "Not too shaken up?"
"I'm fine," she answered, trying a bit too hard not to breathe the smell of smoke, "I'm just finding this all hard to process in my head... So, basic questions: Where am I? Who are you all? Where's Seras and is she okay? What the hell were those things that tried to kill us? What do you want from me?"
"I can't answer all of those questions at once. All I can tell you for now is this brief synopsis: What you've witnessed and killed was a poor version of a vampire, and the ones that followed his command were his ghouls that he created."
"Hold on. Ghouls? As in the living dead?"
"In a way, yes. A ghoul is a result of a deflowered man or woman when they are bitten, killed, and drained of blood from a vampire. They are very much like zombies, but only under the vampire's control."
"So they're just like the results of a virus."
"Exactly. Terminate the host, then the virus has little to no chance of survival."
"And, what about the ones that are... you know, virgins?"
"After a vampire drinks from one of the opposite sex and once the said victim tastes the vampire's blood, then a new one is created."
"Wow, that's kinda confusing..."
"Only at first. As for your friend, the police girl, Seras will be fine... it'll be hard for her to adjust to her new life as a vampire."
"So, then... you're telling me that she was..."
"I'm afraid so."
Mary Ann pulled her knees to her chest and took a huge breath. She wasn't even mad anymore, just a bit guilty for letting it happen.
"Walter, please leave her uniform in here," she ordered the butler.
"Very well, ma'am," he agreed and did so.
"We'll leave you to be alone for now. Take your time to get changed, then both you and the police girl are to meet me in my office for further instructions."
She nodded.
"Welcome to the Hellsing Organization, Mary Ann Harker."
She heard the doors close as everyone left. She crawled out of bed and walked over to her dresser mirror to get a better look at herself. Were those dark circles always under her eyes? How long has it been since she visited a hair salon? Guess this is what looking like shit is, huh. Anyways, after ridiculing herself, she took the uniform they left her in the room and changed. Her new attire was basically a light blue button-up shirt with the Hellsing crest on the left side of her chest as well as on an armband on her left sleeve, a short skirt that went halfway down her thighs, a pair of black socks that went over her knees, a pair of combat boots, and leather gloves. It wan't her first choice for an outfit, but it would have to do. In addition, she found a pair of spandex and placed it over her panties in case anyone would dare sneak a peek up there and fastened a belt around her shirt's belt loops before heading off. She felt kinda worried that they might have confiscated her stuff and hid it somewhere, but she brushed it aside once she saw Seras again. She looked exactly the same: same blue eyes, same blonde hair, same body shape and size. The only difference was the fangs, pale complexion, and the same uniform Mary Ann was wearing, but in yellow instead and white socks. She ran at full speed and hugged her tight, almost squeezing her.
"I thought you were dead," she cried.
"I thought I wasn't going to see you again," Seras responded.
"Don't scare the shit out of me like that!"
"I'm sorry. Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Wait, hold on, what about you? I mean, you're a vampire now."
"In all certainty, I'm not so sure. Everything happened too fast and I never even realized it."
"Well, at least I don't have to look like the next pinup girl for the military."
"You're one to talk."
They both exchanged laughs from their jokes until the same butler from before showed up.
"Miss Victoria, Miss Harker," he spoke, "If you two would kindly follow me."
They walked in the same direction he went, both having the same confusion on their faces.
"Here we are. You'll have to forgive me for not introducing myself earlier."
"Hey, there's no need for apologies, really," Mary Ann explained.
"Then, you both will have to permit me. My name is Walter Dollneaz, head butler of the Hellsing family."
"And my guess is you were a vampire hunter when you met her father, probably retired now?"
"How can you tell?"
"Intuition... Plus, there's a minority of people that are hunters which kill with a certain class, like you for example."
He silently chuckled from her sudden intelligence, "I used to have a name that people called me back then, but I gave it all up while serving Sir Integra's father, even after his death."
"What did they call you?" Seras asked.
"All in good time, Miss Victoria."
After that talk, both girls walked in and found Sir Integra at her desk, looking over various reports of different attacks. She looked up and saw the two walk in and kindly dismissed Walter to tend to his other duties.
"So, Miss Victoria, Miss Harker," she started, "Since you both will be living and working for us now, I will further illuminate the purpose of our cause."
"And... what cause would that be?" Seras asked.
"We're the only monsters that protects England from the other monsters. The Hellsing Organization is a special operations agency, charged by Her Majesty, with any means of finding and eradicating all supernatural and satanic threats and attacks to the Christian church and crown."
"Wait, only in England? Not in any other country?"
"There's only a slight problem: if we were to expand worldwide, then we would be hunted down and exploited as occult conspirators."
"That would really be catastrophic..."
"Mmhmm," Mary Ann agreed.
Sir Integra took her lit cigar and placed it in a nearby ashtray on her desk, "Regarding to the business at hand, we have been receiving word of an extensive string of attacks for months. Perhaps our recent call might be good training for the both of you," Integra continued.
"Recent call?" Seras questioned.
"According to witnesses, there have been a dozen of households broken in and destroyed, the victims' have been mutilated and their heads ripped off, and the attackers left messages written on the walls written in blood from the many deceased in offense against God and all Christendom. You two and Alucard will find them heading north on Route 17, butchering more along the way. Now, go and kill the vampire, girls. Do not even let one single freak standing. The only vampires I can tolerate are Alucard and you, police girl."
Soon as their briefing was over, they were on their way. Mary Ann saw Seras extremely worried as she clutched a sniper rifle close to her person.
"Seras?" she asked, "You okay?"
"I'm fine... what about you?"
"Fine too."
Seras knew that tone of voice that her friend gave, "Mary Ann, it's not your fault."
"I know that. It's just..."
"Don't even think about it. We're both still alive, right?"
"Yeah... well, sort of on your part."
"True. And please, just be careful."
"What more can you ask of me?" she questioned, giving a joking grin.
Once they arrived, Seras was stationed on the roof of another nearby building in case the target escaped and tried to make a run for it and Mary Ann was paired with Alucard after given a G-12 handgun loaded with blessed bullets along with her radio and knife. From the other side of the door, she could hear two voices talking to each other.
"Damn... we've got ourselves a pair of English Bonnie and Clyde vampires inside," she guessed.
"That makes two lives for the price of dozens," Alucard estimated while loading and cocking his pistol.
"Looks like the next step's simple: Don't let them kill you," she answered before firing her own and breaking down the door.
In front of them was a young man, roughly about 18 or 19, beaten up from the shots and holding a carbine. Knowing what's gonna happen next, Alucard shielded her from the open fire until the enemy's ammo ran dry.
"Mary Ann, the only differences between me and scum like this one are these facts: they don't know how to shift their body into mist or an animal, they can't heal any of their wounds, and are easily defenseless. They don't deserve to be called Nosferatu, it's just disgusting to me."
She watched him corner his target in an open room and shoot him against the wall. As soon as it was over, she used her knife again and stab the punk in the chest, watching him disintegrate into dust. Looking around, she saw an open window in the other room.
"Seras, we've got one on the run," she informed her comrade though her radio, "Guess it's your turn."
"Right, I'm on it," the police girl responded.
She saw the bloody imprint of what looked like a cross on the wall and heard the gunshot outside a little while later. She didn't take her gaze off the cross shaped impression, starting to consider if she could ever go back to her old life. But... she knew that she couldn't, since there was nothing for her to go back to. For about the past two days, she tried to figure out how she ended up in this sort of employment. Was it Alucard's idea to recruit her, and if so, what was his reason?
"Mary Ann? You okay?" Seras asked, nudging her best friend back to the real world.
"Huh? Y-yeah... I'm okay," she quietly answered, not making a lot of eye contact.
"Are you not feeling well?"
"No, it's not that..."
"Anything hurt?"
"No..."
"Then, what's wrong? Is it the endless jobs?"
"Not really... I wish I could tell you, but... I don't even know how."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. I just... need some fresh air. I'll be in the shooting arena if anybody needs me," she suggested before leaving her room.
"Okay..."
She walked outside and towards target practice. As soon as she picked up a gun, that moment in Cheddar came flooding back into her brain, causing a slight headache. She ignored it for a brief second and started training. Somehow, all of the bullets she fired ended up around the shoulder, stomach, and knees.
'Damn it!' she wanted to lash out in frustration.
"If you're planning on disarming and incapacitating your enemy, then you've passed, my darling," she heard Alucard speak up.
She was used to him loitering around when she was near or in the same room as him, or when he would catch her alone. It was just plain annoying at first, but she eventually let him be like a loyal dog following it's owner.
"What do you want?" she questioned while reloading the firearm and held it level to her eyesight.
"You've been a bit distant. Sir Integra and Walter implied that it could be feminine troubles."
"Really? Feminine troubles? Only I would know if it was that time of the month."
"I understand entirely, and the police girl says that it's something personal."
"It is, and I'd love it if I would be left alone for now."
He saw that she was trembling a little. It wasn't even that cold outside and still, she was shaking. He walked over and placed his hands over her's from behind to help her aim better.
"When aiming for a ghoul, put the bullet through the heart or the head, and only the heart for a vampire."
She wasn't sure whether to trust him or not.
"Breathe deeply in, hold your breath while aiming, and exhale when you pull the trigger."
She followed his advice and did so, seeing the bullet fly through the target's chest.
"Holy shit... how did you know that would work?" she asked, totally astonished.
"It helps ease tension in the body, calms the nerves, and clears one's mind," he answered while slowly leaning in for a soft kiss on her cheek while casually lacing his fingers with her's.
"I hope I came in at a good time," Walter rang, brutally interrupting Alucard's moment alone.
"You did, Walter. What's up?" she wanted to know, completely shattering his opportunity of making a move.
"Well, we've received news of a sighting in Badrick, a small town in Northern Ireland."
"Ireland? That's a little while away, right? And isn't that, like, ancient Celtic ground?"
"Parts of the place are, yes. The vampire's been found hiding in a deserted hospital as well as some ghouls slumping around."
"And my guess is she wants it done as quickly as we can, yes?"
"With the best efficiency only Hellsing can offer."
"Well, guess we're going on a little road trip. I'll go tell Seras."
She placed the gun back and walked back inside, leaving Alucard in the dust of his own embarrassment and shameful humiliation.
"Seems she's doing a little better..." he commented before noticing Alucard's pissed expression on his face.
"Walter," he growled, "I was very close to making my move."
"I can't help it if Sir Integra sends me to fetch you and the girls."
He almost stormed off like a pouty brat, but Walter caught his attention again.
"Alucard, be extra careful. That town is also within Catholic grounds, and if the Vatican finds out... let's just say we rather not end up entangled in too many messes."
"I don't believe I'll be too worried about that in the future."
The elderly butler watched his colleague leave with a concerned expression on his face, but as for Alucard... he was going to have a lot of fun with her again. After reaching their destination, the trio soon found the entire building swarming with ghouls.
"Maybe this is probably gonna be the opposite of discreet," Mary Ann pointed out.
"You could say that again," Seras agreed, "We should tag team this area."
"You've read my mind."
Once inside, they cleared out ghouls like there was no tomorrow.
"How many ghouls does this bastard even need?! Is there no end at all?" she questioned.
"As much as any vampire needs," Alucard answered, "Remember: these people didn't become ghouls by choice. There's no possible way for them to be cured once they've changed, so we must put them to rest for their own sake."
Mary Ann and Seras switched off shooting positions to make it easier, but Seras' newly found powers were making things extremely enjoyable for her. It was a moment of understanding her true nature as her new self, and her dear friend knew that she would still be by her side when that time came. But that moment soon ended once a stray bayonet pierced through Seras' neck as eight more stabbed from behind her back and out her chest, sending her to the bloody floor.
"Seras!" Mary Ann shouted before trying to pull them out, "These blades... they've been blessed."
All three of them heard a pair of heavy footsteps echoing down a case of stairs to reveal another man across the hall. He was almost taller than Alucard, but he was dressed as a Paladin priest, his cross was hung down to his chest from around his neck, his gloves each bore a cross with the writing "Jesus Christ is in Heaven" on one hand and "Speak with the Dead" on the other, both carrying blood stained bayonets. His eyes were slightly a teal hue and were shielded behind glasses, a scar ran down from his left cheek to his jaw, and his short blonde hair was combed back to shape his angular head.
"We are the servants of God and the messengers of His justice. We are the instruments of His divine wrath on Earth. We are called upon to cleanse His kingdom from the ash of thine fallen enemies. Praise to our Lord! Amen," his spoke in a gruffly Scottish accent as if he was reciting a prayer.
'Wait... that man...' Mary Ann remembered, 'He reminds me of her.'
Her mind flashed back to when she was 9 years old, living with her guardian: a sympathetic and tough nun named Irene, that was once part of the Catholic church but left to be a Protestant, back home in an old cathedral where she cared for the orphan girl since her parents died. Her mind came back to reality once she realized the situation she was in.
"Beautiful moon tonight, don't you agree?" Father Anderson asked.
Seras was in agonizing pain as she tried to move. Mary Ann helped her up with the best she could.
"Best not worry, lass," he reassured her, "You're little friend's not dying... yet. Her heart hasn't been pierced, after all."
She needed to get her, and Alucard, out of there. But with the barrier Anderson had secretly placed around them, it was gonna be more than just difficult.
"It's been a while since I've had a good hunt. I plan on enjoying every second of it. So then, you all must be Helling's abominations?"
"And you..." she spoke, "You're from the Vatican's Special Operations Division. Section XIII... The Iscariot Organization. A Catholic mutt that enjoys the thrill of killing vampires."
"Right you are, pathetic little pup."
Alucard stepped in between the two.
"Ah, and you must be Alucard. The housebroken vampire, the monster that hunts his own kind, the family pet for the Hellsing's."
"Leave her out of this..." Alucard demanded, "What have you done with the vampire we were ordered to hunt down?"
"Oh, that thing? He was killed by my hand. It's wasn't really that much fun at all..."
The two foes were facing each other with intent to kill each other.
"Seems you three are the only ones left standing," Anderson continued.
"Oh really?" Alucard questioned.
Without hesitation, Anderson struck as he skewered Alucard through the torso. Taking the blow, the red monster pulled out his gun and shot the paladin square in the head.
"You made the grave mistake of attacking a vampire head on, even in the middle of the night. Did you even try to catch me by surprise? Such bravery, Father... but that was a foolish mistake," he explained while pulling out the holy blades.
"Master..." Seras tried to speak.
"Don't talk. You've just been stabbed... Mary Ann, are you-?"
From behind, Mary Ann saw Anderson on his feet again. He attacked again and Alucard was back on defense for both girls while she tried to pull out the bayonets that were stuck through her friend. Once that was done, she drew out her gun and fired it across the hall, the bullet passing through Anderson's kneecap. He turned around and saw her on her feet, gun in hand.
"Well then, this is such a surprise," Anderson remarked.
"That's quite enough," she ordered, "Unless you want another bullet in your head."
"Big talk for a little child like you..."
He charged straight at her, but stopped dead at his tracks when she pulled out a worn cross, embroidered with moonstones.
"That pendant... where did you get that?!"
"You knew her, didn't you? Mother Irene?"
"I gave her that when she left the Iscariots. And now I know why: it was all because of you!"
"She left because she was scared! Scared of becoming a freak, just like you!"
"You caused her death!"
"She died saving me from that demonic bastard named Father Admon! He killed her and I killed him, along with half of the children he turned into vampires!"
He gritted his teeth while smiling, "So, you really are the one they call Hell Slayer. Then it would be my pleasure to end you and reclaim what's rightfully mine!"
"If you want it, then come get it. Try and kill me if you're up for the challenge," Mary Ann threatened before she dropped Mother Irene's cross.
Before Anderson could impale her with another bayonet and grab the pendant simultaneously, Alucard pulled her out of the way and held on as they hit the wooden floor.
"Stay out of this, heathen!" the paladin screamed, grabbing him by the back of his neck and nailing him against the end of the hall.
In the lighting from a broken window, she saw Anderson's knee that her bullet flew through heal up like it never happened in the first place.
"Of course... you're a regenerator," she realized.
"Correct, lass. The human race engineered and made me a living weapon to defeat vile monsters like your friends."
She watched Anderson pin Alucard multiple times to the wall with numerous bayonets and then decapitate him before her eyes. This wasn't happening. Why did this he save her?! Seras pulled her to her feet and both girls ran off to the opposite direction. Mary Ann held Alucard's severed head close to her chest and started crying.
"Mary Ann," Seras spoke with concern.
"He should've killed me," she wept, "I was ready to die anyway! Why?! Why...? Alucard... I'm scared. I can't do this, Seras... I can't bear it anymore. People dying around me... It's too much..."
Before Seras could comfort her, one of Anderson's bayonets struck through Alucard's head and stuck it to the wall, grazing Mary Ann's arm.
"Where do you two think you're going?" they heard Anderson as he got closer, "There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. We are nothing more than dust, and from the dust we shall return. Amen."
They were trapped, alone, scared, and going to die. Seras and Mary Ann saw Alucard's head melt into blood as it formed the following command: "Drink my blood, police girl. Drink and you shall never again be treated like a slave. Drink and you shall truly become one of us. You will drink blood of your own choosing, wandering the night, powerful and singular. Become eternal and complete. Drink my blood, police girl. Take it now, Seras Victoria!"
"It's all over," they both heard Anderson say from right behind them.
But, before he could kill both of them, the sound of gunfire broke the silence and shattered the blades.
"Those girls belong to me," Sir Integra informed him, "State your business here, paladin of Iscariot."
Somehow, she knew that the Vatican dispatched Anderson before Seras, Mary Ann, and Alucard arrived and luckily intervened before more blood was spilt.
"Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing... what do I owe the pleasure of this little visit?" he asked.
"This is more than enough, Father Alexander Anderson. It's clear now that this is a violation of our mutual agreement. We have this situation under control, so I would advise you to immediately withdraw. Neither the Iscariots nor the Hellsing Organization can afford this sort of fight. I don't care who you even think you are, this violence ends here and now!"
"Withdraw? Is that order supposed to intimidate me? You really expect that God's own divine instruments of justice to leave on your accord? Sorry, but I'm not one to run away and scream in fear from a filthy Protestant whore like you or your little bastard."
The moment he charged at Sir Integra, he killed two of her bodyguards and pinned her against the wall with nothing but a sward to defend herself.
"And I'm not one to die in the hand of an artificially bio-engineered regenerating agent. Even with your upgraded healing, you're still nothing but a plaything for the Vatican!"
"Perhaps, but you're just like the little freak of a human. Weak. And worthless."
Seras held Mary Ann back so she wouldn't get herself hurt.
"And as for that pet vampire you care for so much... you just missed his decapitation."
"You cut his head off? That's all?" Sir Integra questioned, unfazed.
"Hands off and step away," Seras threatened, aiming a rifle at him.
"Guess it's not looking good for you, Father Anderson. If I were in your position, I'd still leave while I can."
"Are you insane?" Anderson asked, "I'm about to paint the walls with the three of you."
"Then how about you make it quick, because that vampire you decapitated will be coming back to life any second now."
"What?!"
In a split second, the whole hallway was flooding with bats, which caught Anderson off guard.
"Cut off his head... pierced his heart... he's nothing like any vampire you've ever faced before. You're typical tricks won't kill him! You may be the finest creation in anti-vampire technology, but 100 years worth of the Hellsing family's occult knowledge is proud to produce this achievement as our crowned glory: the vampire, Alucard."
And with that, the cluster of bats merged into one form, and Alucard was revived once again.
"Now I believe that you understand, or might be beginning to. So, what will you do now, Anderson?"
"Hmph, I guess I'll leave," Anderson admitted defeat, "After all, I need further preparations to kill this one. We'll be sure to meet again, Hellsing, but next time... I'll be sure to put you in your tombs."
The paladin drew out a thick bible and broke the spiritual barrier before departing. It was over, for now. Mary Ann could finally breath a sigh of relief, but from what the Vatican knew about Irene and bluntly attacking Hellsing out of the terms of agreement, she would make sure that they would pay. The only thing that went in her head was the information that Integra had now shared: the existence of a shadow organization out there that have been mass producing vampires. In her hand, she felt a familiar object and took a quick look... it was Irene's pendant. Somehow, before dying, Alucard must have slipped it back into her hand as he pulled her out of harm's way. The sentiment, anger, and guilt started flooding back as she teared up and cried. Seras comforted her and hugged her from behind, hoping that it would cheer her up. She only smiled a little and began to head off ahead of the rest.
"Mary Ann," Integra commented, "I'm extremely sorry... about your parents, for Mother Irene, and for the hell you had to endure."
"How do you know about all of that?" she asked, standing where she stopped walking.
"I had Walter ask about you from your birthplace. He informed me on everything."
"It's not anyone's fault... it's not your place to forgive me, but I humbly accept your sincere condolences."
She then resumed walking away, hiding her tears, the wrapped the cut on her arm to stop the bleeding with the roll of bandages in her pack.
"You, police girl," Seras heard Alucard from behind, "Why didn't you drink the blood?"
It took her a little while to respond, "I'm not sure... but, it felt like if I did drink your blood, then... it would mean the end of my own humanity."
"You're such an idiot, police girl... but perhaps you do have a point. Guess it's time for a vampire who does not walk alone in the night."
He turned around and saw Mary Ann start to leave them and began to catch up, faintly smelling the blood from her wound.
"Why on earth did you turn her into a vampire, but not Harker, and why did you request for her to be recruited in the first place?" Sir Integra questioned him in curiosity.
"Heh, why indeed? For fun? For sport? Or was it on a whim? Maybe, but that doesn't sound like me, does it? Probably, after years of dwelling with humans, you've rubbed off on me. I might be developing my own sense of whimsy, but then again, who knows? And as for my request? I've been asking that myself as well... Maybe, it's probably a feeling I've had and lost a long time ago."
He ordered Seras to catch up, leaving Integra greatly astonished by his answer. As soon as he caught up to Mary Ann, he saw the expression of sorrow on her face.
"I'm so sorry," he apologized, placing a hand on one cheek, and finally, after a long time in his mind, giving a soft kiss on the other cheek.
'Alucard...' she thought to herself as she saw him leave while lighting touching the kiss with her fingertips, 'He certainly isn't human...'(There we have chapter 1 done. Next chapter will explain more, and fair warning, there will be endless swearing for anyone that know what'll happen next. Thanks for joining and stay tuned for chapter 2! See ya!)
