"Tell me, my dear... through who's eyes do you see true death?" Mary Ann heard a male voice ask from a memory she wanted to forget, but played over and over again in her nightmares.
She kept remembering her parents dying, Mother Irene smiling as she bled before her, the fire from the chapel, the numerous dead bodies that were laid to waste, the state she was found in, and the torturous hell from the hospital in Birmingham. Seeing that deranged doctor's face smiling at her, hearing him laugh, the countless injections and experiments, her throat running dry from her screams and cries, everything that happened. She woke up and sat upright on her bed, already noticing the her eyes leaking out tears.
"It's still the same... nothing's changed. Five years, and it still haunts me," she kept reminding herself.
The following day, Sir Integra called for a Round Table Conference with the other member of the Holy Knights to discuss more on the pressing matter. So far, the Hellsing Organization has found the vampires embedded with microchips in their heads that relays information about the vampire's movements, behaviors, physical and mental state of being, and altercations. These new vampires were different on another level: the ghouls they created weren't only from the corpses of deflowered men and women anymore, but virgins as well were somehow becoming ghouls, and they also survive the destruction of their vampiric host. Whoever was creating these new vampires were showing remarkable skills and results... almost as if the enemy was just like the Hellsing's, or perhaps much more.
"Walter, kindly explain what the hell this thing is here?" Seras questioned, clearly pissed off about the new change in her room.
"That thing you're referring to is only a coffin," Walter explained, pointing out the change.
"I think we know what a coffin is," Mary Ann commented, "Why is there one in her bedroom?"
"Oh, well that avoids all of the confusion. It's brought here on Sir Integra's orders."
"Let me guess: "We simply cannot have a vampire who doesn't sleep in a coffin." Am I correct?"
"There you have it."
"Then, what have you done with my bed?" Seras interrogated.
"I merely disposed of it , of course."
Seras immediately flipped out afterwards, and why not? That was her one perfect source of comfort.
"Ooh, Walter... you really shouldn't have done that," the young human girl warned, "I've lived with her for five years to know her levels of comfort."
"I see... if it helps, the orders were confirmed by Alucard," Walter added.
"Master?" Seras asked.
This was a bit typical of him to agree with Integra.
"Yes. Since you refuse to drink blood like a proper vampire, your body will slowly become weaker. The only option for you is to sleep in a coffin filled with the soil of your birthplace. Even the smallest concession is a necessity to help you keep up with your strength."
Hearing that lecture made both girls feel uncomfortable. Mary Ann felt really bad for Seras, despite the fact that she was a vampire.
"You're a childish idiot, police girl," Alucard broke the silence, walking in on them, "You chose the night, remember? Once your back has been turned on the light of day, the sunlight should only mean a smoldering pain and a slow death to you."
Seeing Seras feel guilty with her choice of not drinking blood started to make her best friend worry about her. Mary Ann laid back on the floor parallel to the coffin and stared up at the ceiling.
"Miss Harker, I understand your concern," Walter addressed, "But it's for the better."
"I know that, it's just... she's not the only one with experiences on solitary confinement," she answered.
"Ah, the hospital in Birmingham. How long has it still plagued your mind?"
"About five years now, along with everything else," Seras answered, "We both tried everything to help her forget and move on, but it keeps coming back. Besides, it's better to be away from there than remaining there to rot."
Mary Ann sighed and stood on her feet, only making eye contact with the draculina, smiling a little.
"I believe I might have something that might brighten the mood," the aged butler suggested, revealing a couple of cases, "Ladies first."
Mary Ann walked over and opened the case she received. Inside was a beautiful handgun with elaborate pinstripe engravings that looked like a snake wrapping around a lily.
"I present to you: the Incognito. A custom 9 mm anti-freak magnum pistol. 17.5 cm long, 8 kg in weight, 10-12 custom made shots per magazine. In comparison to Alucard's 454 Casull, the Incognito has the upper hand in stealth and efficiency."
Mary Ann loaded and held her new gun in utter awe and amazement.
"And Alucard, I was hoping this new addition would please you," he added, handing Alucard's case to him.
Inside was the same model as the Casull, but it was black and the words Jesus Christ is in Heaven Now was etched on both sides of the barrel.
"The Jackal. A 13 mm anti-freak combat pistol that fires the same custom rounds as the Casull and the Incognito, but far more powerful. 39 cm long, 16 kg in weight, 6 shots per magazine. In the same comparison, the Jackal has more firepower than any human can be expected to handle."
"And the rounds for our new toys?" Alucard asked, looking very pleased before loading his with a fresh magazine.
"13 mm NNA9 marvel bullets, as well as 9 mm ones for the Incognito."
"Casings?"
"Pure Macedonian silver."
"And the tips?"
"Mercury, and already blessed in advance."
"It's complete perfection, Walter," Mary Ann complimented with a smile.
"I'm thankful that you're pleased, Miss Harker."
"I'd wager something like this might even stop Father Anderson dead in his tracks," Alucard added.
"Oh my God, Mary Ann. That's amazing!" Seras marveled, "Your's too, Master."
"Oh, Miss Victoria. I believe I have something for you, as well," Water continued, opening a larger case and pulling out a huge firearm, "The Harkonnen, a 30 mm anti-freak cannon. Designed with both depleted uranium shells and exploding incendiary shells, this weapon is capable of destroying all but the most heavily armored targets."
Both Seras and Mary Ann gawked in shock at the size of the new weapon.
"What the hell is that supposed to be?!" Seras freaked out.
"Whoa, hold on!" Mary Ann said before stuffing her new gun in it's holster, "You are not serious on having her lug that thing around, are you?!"
"I think it suits her just fine," Alucard commented.
"Well, I really don't think so. I mean, she wouldn't even look good carrying it. And, I mean, is using depleted uranium even legal? But surely, she's a strong girl, but not that strong."
"I'm confident that Miss Victoria is capable," Walter stated, giving a smirk of satisfaction, making both girls nervous.
They groaned and sank to the floor on their hands and knees, "I'm made to suffer after death, Mary Ann," Seras whined, "You receive so many nice things, and all I get is a cannon and a coffin in the vampire package."
"It's not all on you," she confided, "Let me take half of your burdens. At least, that'll keep the red monster off my back."
Walter stifled a snicker as Alucard tensed up a little from her calling him such a thing.
"That's one thing we can agree on."
Alucard cleared his throat, looking down at them, "If you two are done whining..." Mary Ann sat upright on the floor and Seras stood on her feet again, "Perhaps you would care to tell me how you and the police girl are such close friends."
"Alucard, I think questioning something so personal would be an irrational action," Walter tried to interfere.
"No, it's alright," she spoke, standing back up, "Everyone else knows except him. He deserves to know, anyway... It all started when-"
Her radio caught interference before she could explain while the lights flickered at the same time. She pulled it off her belt and adjusted the current station and channel, trying to match the wavelengths until she hit a clear point.
"Sir Integra! This is Control Room 1, can you read us?" one of the commanders said.
"What happened? Report the situation," Sir Integra answered through her intercom.
"We're under attack by an unknown enemy! All outside communications have been cut off, we can't reach anyone from ouside!"
"Hold the line at the front entrance. Buy as much time as you possibly can."
"Yes ma'am, we'll- Oh god, this can't be happening!"
"Officer?! I need detail on our enemy! How many are out there?! Who or what are we fighting against?!"
"The enemies are an army of ghouls!"
'Ghouls?! Here? But... how is that...?' Mary Ann tried to process, feeling the radio slip out of her hand.
Luckily, Walter caught it before it landed on the floor.
"A ghoul army? How is that even accomplished?" Seras questioned, worrying about everyone's safely, "And Sir Integra's up there! We need to get everyone out of here!"
As soon as she said that, an explosion can be heard from the rooftop outside.
"What the hell was that?"
"It must've been the heliport," Water answered, "It appears someone's planned this invasion in advance."
"Sir Integra, we can't hold this position for much longer!" the officer called in, "We're being overrun, there's too many-"
"Officer?! Respond!" Sir Integra tried to establish contact while there was screaming and what sounded like struggling before another voice came through.
"Ahem... uh, hello? Is this fucking thing on? Cool!" someone else answered, "This exclusive message is going out to the Round Table Conference, and a personal and very special shout out to the queen bitch herself, Miss Hellsing! Your asses have now been kicked by the Valentine brothers! My name's Jan Valentine and I really can't wait to meet each and every one of you jackasses! We'll be getting intimate once me and my boys finish lunch. Oh, let me be the first to thank you all for providing us with these delicious and tasty snacks. By tomorrow, Hellsing will be nothing but a big ol' pile of shit. You've got nowhere left to run and no place to hide, cuz now I'm coming to get ya. I wanna see you all cry and beg for mercy when I kill you. So, in the meantime, I would highly recommend pissing yourselves followed by a course of praying to your impudent God! There's also time to be a manly pussy and just kill yourself. Thank you, London! We love you! Goodnight!"
After that transmision, the channel went dead. Everyone was being cornered and eaten alive. The whole room was silent, the only person that was scared was Seras, and Mary Ann was just enraged on the inside. Walter placed the radio on the table next to the phone as he answered the call.
"Walter, give me your position," Integra asked on the receiving end.
"Miss Victoria's room in the sub-basement. I've already been brought up to speed, thanks to Miss Harker's radio communicator. The first two floors, as well as the roof, have been taken. All outside communications are cut off, so reinforcements won't be expected to arrive for about a few hours, approximately four or five. In the meantime, our current soldiers are ordered to defend the conference room with their own lives," Walter answered, making eye contact with Mary Ann, who was thinking of a plan.
"What would you recommend?"
Walter read her signals as he responded, "For starters, fortify the conference room on the inside. Since Miss Harker, Alucard, and Miss Victoria are with me down in the sub-basement, we'll split into two teams. Alucard and Miss Harker will remain down here, and Miss Victoria and I will head up to the third floor to where you are."
'What?! Walter, please! Pair me with ANYONE but Alucard,' she wanted to beg but heard Integra question how Seras and Walter will manage to meet up with her since the hallways are teaming with ghouls.
"How did you manage to mind Alucard's cell ten years ago?" Walter asked in return.
The question rang in her head for a while before Integra answered, "Of course, the air ducts."
"Seems to be the best solution. We'll both be there shortly."
"Walter... these feral animals are relentlessly eating my men. Show no mercy! Do not let them leave these grounds alive!"
"By your orders, Sir Integra."
Mary Ann's brain tried to wrap around the solution of her plan, hoping it wouldn't backfire. Or worse...
"Amusing. Does Walter Dollneaz, the Angel of Death, ride again?" Alucard interrogated, smiling.
"Huh? What are you two talking about?" Seras chimed in.
"You'll see soon enough, police girl."
"Hold on. The "Angel of Death" was you, Walter?" Mary Ann interrogated, "That was your name?"
"Indeed it was," Walter answered, "It seems that this veteran is coming out of retirement to assist the rookie."
"Makes you wonder if anything normal happens around here..."
"This could actually be fun," Alucard added before slinging Mary Ann over his shoulder.
She yelped and started kicking and screaming, demanding him to put her down.
"Also makes you wonder if any normal people live or work in this bloody place..." Seras added after watching them leave.
Mary Ann kept going, hoping something would set Alucard off and cause him to drop her, but it only made him chuckle.
"This is just embarrassing," she snapped.
"You'll have to excuse me for my sudden course of action, then," Alucard apologized.
"Really? After carrying me off like that, you're sorry?"
"If I left you alone with Walter and the police girl, then you wouldn't remain down here."
"Dammit... sometimes I hate you."
"Hate me? Whatever on earth for?"
"Shall I list the number of times you've pissed me off?!"
"My, that sounds pretty extensive."
After their little talk, he dropped her on the floor once they arrived in a dimly lit room. All that was in there was a big arm chair and a small side table with a couple of wine glasses and a half empty bottle in the center. There was a slight, but sharp, lingering chill and his footsteps echoed against the walls.
"Where... are we?"
"My cell, of course. The prison I was bound in for over twenty silent years, until my master awakened me from my rest."
"That long?" she questioned the vampire while trying to stand back up, "Since when did-"
Alucard covered her mouth as he heard something above on the first floor. Mary Ann also heard the noises too. Gunshots, slicing, screaming, bodies falling, and muffled chatter. He then picked her up again and quickly placed her behind the chair. After he sat down in his seat, he leaned back and waited for whoever was coming.
"She was only a child," he whispered, cutting the silence, "My master's father had passed on from his life and her uncle was hunting her down to claim the Hellsing title. After finding and awakening me, I slaughtered her enemies and pronounced her as my master."
After hearing his story, her mind started to imagine what happened. Questioning whether or not she should tell him her past, she took a deep breath and swallowed her fear.
"I was four when they died..." she began, "My parents. Whenever I had a bad dream, they would bring to their room to sleep with them. One night, I heard a noise. I didn't know what to do, so I stayed in my bed and hid under the covers. Afterwards, the police found me. Scared, crying for them. When they brought me out of the house... I saw them. Mutilated by some wild beast. Then, I was placed in foster care by a friend of my parents."
"Mother Irene... that was her name, correct?"
"That's her. She was a godmother to me. But seeing what happened to mum and dad left me heartbroken, and she helped me cope with my loss. Until he came along."
"Father Admon."
She nodded, "Both he and Mother Irene took care of me and the other broken children that were there. But little did I know of Admon's motives during his stay... Mother Irene left the Iscariot Organization after being acquainted with my parents and devoted herself to the Protestant church. She taught me how to fight and defend myself. When she knew what Father Admon really was, she engaged against him."
"What was he?"
"A vampire. He convinced and took many of the other children into his care, but he turned them into vampires as well... He tried to persuade me to run away with him when I just turned sixteen. I refused. He blamed it all on Irene and they fought. And killed her, right in front of me."
Mary Ann sniffled and dried her eyes while talking more.
"She told me to be brave and to make Hell pay for taking everything from me. My mind snapped, and I murdered him. The children he turned attacked and I killed them too. Then... everything was in flames. Blood was spilt everywhere, and I reveled in my vengeful massacre. Part of what I remember was a blur... Soon after, the authorities placed me in a hospital in Birmingham, not too far from London to assess and evaluate my condition."
Alucard tried his best not to move from where he was seated, imagining everything she told him.
"The doctor was called Atlas Ryan. Little did anyone know that he was an escaped convict from a sanitorium, accused of murder and heinous torture. Hiding in plain sight, he did numerous tests on me for some unknown group of people, trying to get into my head. Weeks later, he was caught, arrested, and reinstated. Seras was part of the dispatch team that was called when she found me. She took me in and helped mend me again. Five years later, the two of us became best friends, and here we are now."
She sighed, resting the back of her head so she would face the dark ceiling.
"Every night, those events play inside my head like a broken record. I'd give anything to make them disappear.."
"Mary Ann... we have company," he informed before there was a large boom as the door was busted down which startled her.
She wanted to reveal herself and kill whoever was trying to annihilate her and everyone else, but each step the stranger took tested her resistance even harder.
"I know you're hiding in here," she heard the intruder speak, "I can still feel your presence."
His voice was different than the other one that was on the radio, so it had to be the other Valentine brother.
"Why on earth would I even hide?" Alucard answered, lying that he was the only one in the room, "Don't even dare mistake my patience for cowardice. Besides, I was starting to get bored while waiting for you."
"It's such a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Alucard. The name's Luke Valentine... I just have to say that I'm a really big fan of your work."
"My work? How flattering. And what brings a mangy mongrel like you in my den?"
"Such vulgarity in your choice of words. I'm merely here to fulfill my duties. But I must say, I've never expected to be standing here face to face with the No Life King himself."
'The... No Life King...?' she tried to think over in her head, holding the Incognito close to her holster.
"It's funny," Luke continued, "Your name gets thrown around a bit across the map. The tales people spread around, stories of your amazing feat of strength, how you glide through oceans of blood. Nightwalker, they called you... beyond human. A monster whose power casts a shadow of darkness upon darkness itself, and finally, I get to see if there's more to you than just legends."
She clenched her teeth together, starting to get sick over his ramblings.
"When I used to be human, I feared you. Well, the stories anyway. And when I gave up being human to become this, I began to admire you: the first grand pioneer of immortality, with us merely chasing your growing shadow."
"That's ridiculous," Alucard confronted him with a smirk on his face, "Do you even hear yourself, you fool? There's no such thing as an immortal."
"Yes, I know that fact. And once I have your head on a stick and your precious human girl in my grasp, everyone else will understand that fact, too. So now, all I have to do is kill you, take her, and make my wildest dreams come true."
"I don't think so," he argued, pulling out his gun simultaneously as Luke pulled out his, "Mary Ann, run!"
"What?!" she suddenly questioned.
"I rather see you live freely than be a captive again for torture."
"But, this isn't part of-"
"Altercations have to be made. Just go!"
Once they both pulled the trigger, Mary Ann made a break for it and ran straight to the third floor. When she was out of harm's way, Alucard unleashed all of his pent-up rage and fought Luke while standing his ground.
"Yes, this is excellent," he laughed, "I haven't had this much fun in ages! What did you say your name was again?"
"I-it's Luke... Luke Valentine," he stuttered, suddenly full of fear.
"Luke Valentine... it's perfectly obvious that your powers are even beyond the highest category of vampires."
Soon, the whole room grew darker.
"Releasing control art restrictions levels 3, 2, 1. Approval of situation A recognized. Commencing the Cromwell invocation. Ability use restrictions lifted for limited use until the enemy has been rendered silent."
Then, millions of eyes were looking down on his enemy.
"Now then, Luke Valentine, it's time to educate you on how a real vampire does battle!"
Suddenly, his whole body transfigured and deformed into a hellish creature, severing Luke's legs as he tried to make a break for the only exit.
"What even in the hell are you?!" he shouted terrified.
Alucard cackles as he manifests in front of him, "Come on! Get up and attack me!" he challenged, "You only lost your legs, after all. Now then, summon your familiars! Transform your mortal shell! Heal yourself and stand! The evening is still so young. Come on, hurry! The real fun has only just begun!"
"Oh god, you're a monster!"
When Alucard heard his enemy call him that, he grew extremely disappointed, and more pissed off.
"So then, I see that this is what you really are: nothing but a useless and pathetic lump of meat!"
"Shut up! You're nothing but a toy to the Helling family! A dog to the Protestant church of England, unfit to call yourself a vampire! Only a fool who's head over heels for an unstable human girl that's just waiting to explode like a bomb! A puppet to-"
"Silence!" he yelled, knowing that he crossed the line when he mentioned Mary Ann, "I'm a dog? Then you're dog food."
His arm transformed into a hungry rabid hound and lunged at his prey, eating him alive, piece by piece.
"That's really all you have? It's such a shame I overestimated you. As a vampire, you were only just a piece of shit... now you're nothing but dog shit."
He regained his form and drank up any blood left over, hoping that his precious human bride was surviving. Meanwhile, stepping over many fallen soldiers, Mary Ann found her path blocked by more ghouls. She had her new gun loaded and ready, but she was too afraid to fire. Still running, she managed to find Seras and Walter interrogating the other Valentine brother, obviously Jan.
"Miss Harker," Walter called out, "What happened to the plan?"
"I don't know... he told me to make a break for it, so I had to make it up here to find you guys."
"That is troubling."
The younger brother snickered and laughed, still being held down by Seras' takedown maneuver.
"What is so funny, young man?"
"You fucking people don't even know that you're all gonna die. You have no idea what kind of shitty moves I have left..." he stated before breaking free.
From down the hall, opposite of the conference room doors, Walter, Seras, and Mary Ann saw more ghouls. But what was more terrifying was that they were the murdered Hellsing officers.
"Oh god, what have you done?!" Walter shouted, completely infuriated.
Jan zipped by and made it to his goal, only to find Sir Integra and the other representatives of the Holy Knights brandishing guns and shooting him on the spot. After seeing the horror unfold, Seras pushed her friend out of the way, but only failed when they grabbed her. Trying to take deep breaths and staying calm while they surrounded the girls, Mary Ann heard so many voices ringing and overlapping each other in her pounding head, until only one surged through her mind: her own from the past.
'Unforgivable... they should all be put down like rabid animals...! Every! Last!! ONE!!!'
She smiled big and wide, firing her shots and using her knife to slice them clean. Blood, guts, and torn bodies flying and splattered everywhere. Not only was there emptiness in her eyes, but also madness, rage, and bloodlust with a laugh to match. It was the first time anyone in the Hellsing Organization saw her in this state of insanity.
"Mary Ann!" Sir Integra screamed, running towards her to restrain her, "That enough! Please, stop. Mary Ann, please. It's done."
She snapped back into reality, seeing the carnage that she caused. Holding back her panicked screams, she looked at Seras, who was just as frightened as Integra. While Walter and Integra interrogated Jan more, now that he was on his last legs, things took a very informative and unexpected turn.
The following day, Mary Ann blamed herself over having Integra take the blame and responsibility over not preventing the attack. 11 out of 97 member remain alive... And only a word out of the ordeal from Jan Valentine when he bursted into flames: Millennium.(Alright! That's two down, and a lot more to go in the story. Next part is the introduction to our favorite mercenary, and no... it's NOT Deadpool. Stay tuned and see ya in chapter 3!)
