I got my History books out and slammed my locker door shut, only to find a worried Caroline looking back at me. I jumped back and shut my eyes to get a grip of myself. My heart was beating fast and my books almost slipped out my hands.
“Caroline, don’t sneak up on me like that. I could have had a heart attack.” I said adjusting my books into my bag.
“Ruby, being a prat again?” She asked, my face twisted into a ‘yeah she is’ and Caroline understood. “Well, don’t worry. Ruby will try and look amazing on Friday, but you’ll steal her limelight.” She said smiling and nudged me.
How could I tell her that I wanted to change my mind. She was excited, and it was our last night together. I tugged on my light blue jumper and bit my lip.
“Caroline, I’m having second thoughts about this party” I said, and she stared at me like she didn’t understand.
She scoffed and rolled her eyes. “It’s Ruby isn’t it? You’re scared of her so you won’t go. Isabelle, when will you realise that she doesn’t run your life, but you do? You can’t let fear take over.”
I looked at my muddy sneakers I’d had for 3 years. I seriously needed to some ones.
“Ok” I gave in. “I’ll still go.”
“Good” she smiled and put her hair in a messy ponytail. "Going to tennis practice, what have you got now?”
“History, then I’ll be going home.”
She nodded and sprinted off, he hair bouncing as she ran. But she was right, I always did well in school to get a good job. And that’s understandable, but I really hadn’t lived, I’d probably lived in fear, but I needed to lighten up, get out there and do some wild crazy thing. Or I’d miss my chance. I mean, I knew this girl a long time ago, she was 18 like I am now. She was such a wild girl until she met this boy, and she fell for him bad, and ended up marrying him, but it also put an end to her wild life. So if I don’t live now, who knows. Things could change.

I slumped down in the nearest armchair, wiped my face with one hand. My mother was pacing the room,. She was worried as usual about me. Sometimes I felt so guilty, I loved her and my carelessness always got her worried and upset. I didn’t mean it to harm her in any way. I got up and went to her by the window. She stared out of it, highly alert for something.
“Mum, calm down. Why are you in such a rush?” I asked and took both her hands in mine.
“Have you had any luck?” she asked and held my cheek. I looked down and the carpet. It needed to vacuumed, I’ll have to make sure someone gets that done. But the truth was, I had been looking, for a wife. And it was hopeless. Three days had passed and all the girls were whiny, selfish, stuck-up and any other unappealing thing. I meant a one night stand with them is fine, but the rest of my life?! No, I couldn’t do that. And there was hardly any time left.
“No, I’m sorry. I just can’t find a wife that I’d want to spend my life with.” I let go of her hands and put them in my pocket, playing with my car keys.
