You looked around your room. The old memories flooded your mind as you did. You remember having slumber parties with your friends and all the roleplays you did with them. You remember Lucifer, a cross between a human and a bird-like monster, to be exact, a nightingale-like monster. There's a long-running joke about Lucifer being a 'Valkyrie', thus you always call him 'Valk'. You smile at the memory, slowly letting the bitter taste take over. Valk moved away a long time ago and you two soon drifted apart. You turn around catching the glimpse of a poster. That poster was the delta rune with the words, 'PROJECT: FREEDOM' on it. You smile even wider now. Your (f/color) ears started to twitch at a low humming sound.
"NEAL!" You yell, your voice carrying throughout the house. "STOP THAT INFERNAL BUZZING YOU SON OF A B-"
"Watch thy tongue, love. It'll be a shame to fall into a habit of cursing, now wouldn't?" Your mother said as she walked into the room. "Now, are you all set?"
You took a deep breath and sighed. You were somewhat glad that you were going off the college but unsure about the entire thing. You step outside your room and walk downstairs where your brother, Neal, was waiting with that goofy smile of his. He's mint colored fur was as beautiful as ever, despite you not saying out loud. He held something behind him and there's a light pink blush on him.
"Hey, (y/n)." He said, his cheerful voice cracked and let a moment of sadness push through. "Imma miss ya, bro. I want you to take him with you." A pause as he shows what was him his hands. You saw what it was. It was the kitty plush you give to him on his seventh birthday.
"N-Neal, you sure? Mittens, he's yours. I can't take-" You start.
"I'm sure." Neal interrupts, his eyes showing his determination. You carefully take the plush and tuck it into your arms, as if it was a child. It kind of was in this moment. Years of endurance of Neal's brotherly pestering instantly took its toll on you as you hugged the plush close to your chest and let the tears fall. As the tears fall so do you, Neal goes over to you and gives you a kind of hug only a brother could give. "It's going to be okay, bro. It's not like you'll be gone forever."
You sniff as you wipe your eyes and nod. You'll visit when you could, like on break or Christmas, but just being away from all this, it was too much. You didn't even have your friends with you, Valk, or Neal. All you had was Mittens and all your playlists on your phone that you barely listen to.
You stood up with Neal still in an embrace. Eventually, you returned the gesture as your tears slowed to a stop. As you two pulled back from the hug, Neal managed to land a kiss on your cheek, causing you to smile. You remembered when you used to do that to him when he was younger. You ruffled his hair and placed a kiss on his forehead.
"I should be on my way." You said, both determined and unsure. You took the last of your luggage and headed for the door. Upon opening the door, you nearly broke down. Standing there was your dad, whom always left for work before you woke and you hardly ever saw him.
"D-dad, is it really you?" You asked, your lip quivering and your eyes tearing up. You open your arms to give a hug to your father, who hugged you back.
"Of course, how could I miss the day you go to college?" He said, letting you go. "Now, make us proud!"
You smiled even brighter as you gave everyone one last hug before you had to go. All your luggage was packed and went ahead to be sent to the college. You took your carry on and Mittens and when into the cab. As you moved away, you watched your family disappear into the distance. Never in your life did you think that you'd hug Mittens this passionately.
