"Ivan!" Came the sound of Jenny's voice as she came in through the front door from school. It sounded very much like she was in pain, so he immediately came running into the front room.
"What's wrong, Jen?" He asked her. She could see that she was clutching her left arm.
"As I came out of school a few minutes ago I slipped on my way out the front gates and really hurt my arm! I think my shoulder's dislocated!" Her eyes were fearful and reflected the intense pain she was currently in. The only other serious injury she'd ever had was nearly 2 years beforehand when she'd sprained her ankle during P.E class one day, but that was before she knew Ivan.
"Let's have a look. I'll see what I can do." He said, and he beckoned for Jenny to sit down in the armchair a few feet away from her, so she did what she was told after putting her school backpack down in the corner. Ivan came and knelt down next to her on the left-hand side, inspecting her shoulder. He was an osteopath, so Jenny realised he knew what he was doing in this situation, but she still couldn't help but flinch and wince out whenever he touched her shoulder, even gently.
After a few more moments, he told her, "Yep, you were right. You've dislocated it. I'm gonna try and move the shoulder back into its correct position, but I think you should brace yourself. It's gonna hurt."
"Ivan, wait." Jenny said, gripping his arm with her other hand. "Just to clarify, how are we gonna do this? Is it gonna be after the count of 3, which is 1, 2, 3, and then push the shoulder back, or on the count of 3, so 1, 2, and then do it when you get to 3?"
"I honestly don't mind. You can pick."
"Well then... is it okay if we do it after the count of 3?"
"Yeah, of course!" He then gently put both his hands on Jenny's shoulder. "Again, this is gonna hurt."
"I'm scared..." Jenny admitted quietly.
Ivan's eyes now showed that he sympathised for the teen girl in front of him. So innocent, yet so frail when you thought about it.
"I know, kid. I know." He said to her softly. "But the good thing is, it'll only last a second, tops. And after I do this, it'll be all over, okay?"
Jenny smiled a little and nodded.
"Alright, well then here we go." Ivan paused for a moment. "1... 2... 3!" Then after saying '3', he pressed hardly on Jenny's shoulder bone, causing her to yell out in pain for a split-second and there was a loud noise that sounded like a click as the bone moved back into position.
She sighed out in relief now that it was done, leaning back against the armchair.
"How does your shoulder feel now?" Asked Ivan.
"Still hurting a bit, but better, thanks."
"Wait, hang on a sec." He got up and fetched something out of his medicine box, and Jenny saw that he was prepping a syringe. "This is just a painkiller to help the healing process along." He explained as he put on some latex gloves, came back and knelt down again next to Jenny, whose eyes widened slightly at the sight of the syringe. She'd always had a fear of needles. Ivan was aware of this, so he said to distract her, "Huh? Is that one of your Cars diecasts over there?"
"Where?" But Ivan took the opportunity while she was distracted to quickly insert the needle into her arm. She gasped for a moment, but the pain of it soon subsided, like a bee sting. She looked away while he did it, and soon he removed the needle again and put it away back inside his medical box.
"Sorry 'bout that, just they say it hurts less if it's a surprise." He said with a chuckle as he took off the latex gloves and put the medical box away after fetching something else out of it.
"I suppose it kinda did. It probably is better if you're not expecting it." Jenny agreed. The mark on her arm from where the needle had gone in was throbbing a little bit and bleeding, but it mostly took away the pain from her shoulder.
"Hold still." He came back again, and after he knelt down, he then dabbed the syringe mark on Jenny's arm with some cotton to stop the bleeding and soon put her arm in a sling as well. It was partially uncomfortable, but she quickly got used to it within a few seconds.
"Thank you, Ivan." Jenny thanked him with a friendly smile.
"No problem, kid." He returned the same smile. "It'll be healed enough for you to take the sling off in a few days, and then you'll need to avoid sports and stuff like that for a couple of months, but you've gotta be more careful!" He added in a bit of a joking manner. "Or I swear one of these days you'll probably end up killing yourself and won't noti-" But he stopped and almost laughed when he noticed that Jenny was fast asleep.
"Must be pretty tired. Probably an extra effect of the painkiller." Ivan spoke his thoughts out loud to no one in particular, and then kissed Jenny on the forehead, causing her to smile in her sleep. "Hope your arm feels even better when you wake up, Jen."
