I whispered, "What the hell?"

I started to answer, but my phone got pulled out of my hand.

"HEY!"

I looked up into Lace's face. Her bowl cut hairstyle was dyed bubble gum pink and blue, and seeing as she was wearing a cute pink sundress, I was guessing she decided to be a girl today. I looked at Sadie, and saw that they were wearing a cute button up and a skirt, but their hair was in a short boy quiff style. Sadie looked up and confirmed what I had been thinking.

"Calm down, I'm non-binary today."

I laughed and then pulled my phone out of Lace's hands. Lace harrumphed but turned back around in her seat. She looked at me through the mirror, and asked, "who are you texting?"

I blushed and looked at the phone screen again. Jayce Miller's name was written at the top in pretty cursive. (It's nice to have your dad work as a government official. Cool perks!) Looking back at Lace, I just smiled and turned my phone off. She laughed and then went back to looking at the road. I started to look too, but another buzz from my phone stopped me. I looked down at the glowing screen and saw something that made me stiffen up in fear.

KLY: I'm coming for you, Destiny Addlestone...

I shakily looked up into the mirror and Sadie caught my eye.

"Dessie, what wrong?"

Lace turned around too and then grabbed my phone again. This time I didn't protest. I watched in shock as she read the message and then mouth three words. Three words I couldn't make out.

"K. L. Y. Who is that?"

Since I couldn't talk, I looked at Sadie. They turned to Lace, and whispered, "Kia Lou-Sin."

Lace gasped and looked back at me. "Wait," she started, looking between me and Sadie, "she's not..."

I nodded. I slowly reached out and grabbed the phone. My heart was pounding, and suddenly, I was aware of every detail. I saw the scar on Lace's neck that she got because she got in her dad's way. I noticed Sadie had a freckle in an almost unnoticeable place. The people outside the car became more clear. I scanned the perimeter of what I could see and calmed down as I saw the school. In silence, Sadie pulled into the parking lot and then they looked back at me. I ignored my friends and grabbed my bag. I opened the door and jumped out. Closing the door, I felt someone behind me. I stiffened and then smiled as I heard a husky voice whisper in my ear, "Hello beautiful."

Spinning around, I answered, "Hello handsome."

I looked into the face or Jayce Miller. His light sandy blonde hair was flopping in his face, but I could see ocean blue eyes clearly. They seemed to be twinkling, and we were so close, I could kiss his nose if I stood a little taller. I blinked and then realized there were twenty people watching. I stepped back and bumped into Lace. She giggled and then gave Jayce a wave. He nodded and then looked at Sadie, who had come around from the other side of the car. She gave him a quick smile and then ran to catch up with Lace.

"Why are you waiting out here? You usually wait at my locker," I ask, and Jayce's aloof smile disappeared. He grabbed my wrist and then led me past the group of people that had gathered. Everyone tried to get Jayce's attention, but he didn't give anyone a glance. Once we were right outside of the school doors. He stopped. I looked around and saw Kai in the corner. I froze and watched as she stared me, her green eyes hard, like my ring. Her gaze sent shivers down my spine, but I forced myself to focus back to Jayce. He was looking around too, but he didn't seem to look for anyone in particular. Once he was sure no one was there, he looked at me. I could see his freckles, and I almost could make a little connect the dots on his nose. His breath smelled minty, and I knew that he probably didn't eat breakfast, but just inhaled three sticks of gum.
