"Let go of me, Nick," I squeal, as I struggle to escape from his grasp. "Not until you talk to me, Lex. What's wrong with you?" he demanded with a hint of seriousness in his voice. This boy meant no-nonsense. I needed a plan to get away from him, because I wasn't telling him a thing.
I stopped struggling. His grip eased but he still had his arms around me. "Are you gonna stop now?" he questioned. My back was against his chest and I felt enveloped in his warmth, but that wasn't going to distract me. I elbowed him in the gut as hard as I could and he released me, spluttering. Running as fast as my short legs could carry me, I tried to get away from him. Yes, he's on the football team. Yes, he's fast. But I was sly, like a fox. I swerved down the alleyway that was a shortcut to my house and luckily, I was the only one who knew about it. I smirked evilly, knowing he wouldn't catch me now. My feet pounded the Tarmac as I ran at full speed. I wasn't chancing anything, even though I knew I'd won.
I unlocked my front door and stepped inside. By the looks of it, no one was home. I tossed my backpack onto the couch and trotted off to the kitchen. I grabbed an energy bar and a can of soda from the fridge and made my way to my room. Lying back on my bed, my thoughts were filled with Nick. I had it bad for him and I think he knew it. After closing my eyes, I began to drift away from reality. "Gotcha!" I screamed at the top of my lungs in response to the husky voice sounding from beside me. I felt an arm slide under my back and one under my knees. I was being lifted. I hated being lifted. "Let me go you stupid jerk." I shouted, slapping Nicks' face multiple times. He just kept walking with a smug look on his face.
We reached the bottom of my staircase and I was still hitting him. "Lex, please stop. I need to talk to you. Please, just give me 2 minutes of your time." Surprisingly, he wasn't being cocky; he gave me a pleading look as his bright blue eyes bored into me. I couldn't resist those eyes, no matter how hard I tried. I sighed in defeat, which was a good enough answer for Nick. He carried me to the couch, where my backpack was slumped, and plopped me down on it.
Perching himself at the end if my feet, he wrapped his hands around my ankles and pulled me across him. I couldn't help but giggle at this affectionate gesture. My knees lay on top of his thighs. I waited for him to speak, but he didn't. I wasn't going to be the first to say something. He was the one who wanted to talk to me, so he can be the one to talk.
My eyelids were starting to droop, out of boredom. We'd been sitting like this for at least ten minutes.
"I'm in love with you, Lexi."
My mouth dropped open, ready to catch flies. I was not expecting this at all. I scrambled up from my seat and set off on another run. Flying out the door, I sprinted down the sidewalk. Looking down, I noticed I wasn't wearing any shoes. Hmm, I didn't remember talking them off, but oh well.
Nick Roberts, the most popular guy in school, my close friend, my long time crush, just told me he was in love with me. This had to be some kind of a sick joke?! These things don't happen to annoying, unpopular people like me. I can't do anything about this can I? No matter how much I love him, I can't give in like that. I'll admit, I have a ridiculously large pride but this time I had to make use of it. I was just going to be another one of his flings. I can't do this to myself, not again. He deserves someone who can deal with all his popular attention and control their jealousy when the female population, and parts of the male population, are batting their fake eyelashes at him and showing off their goodies.
Ugh, I just want to go home and cry myself to sleep. I half turned around until I remembered; he's going to be there, waiting. "DAMMIT!" I screamed in frustration. "It's my house and he thinks he can barge in and tell me stuff like that? To hell with him, it's my house, my rules. He can get the hell out." I argued aloud. I had attracted some unwanted attention of a few passers-by. "Oh look crazy girl on the street." I mocked them and stormed off back home.
