CHAPTER I

CARTER

Carter awoke in a cold, damp stone room. There was only one window, and it had bars criss-crossing it like rebar. 'Not rebar,' he thought, 'but a cell window!' Carter looked across and saw a girl his age sitting on a stone slab he supposed was a bed. He had no memory of how he got there, WHERE he was at all. He looked back and saw a door. He walked to it, and pulled and yanked, but to no avail. He shouted, and heard nor saw nothing, except for being whirled around by the girl on the bed.

"Are you insane?!?!?!?!?" she asked. She had a slight but distinct british accent

"Uhmmm......No?"

"Then why are you shouting? You'll awaken the guard!"

"Look, I don't even know where I am! Who you are! Who are you?"

She released him and slowly stood. "My name is Desireè. I was a regional leader of the rebels before I was imprisoned." She said, eyeing him suspiciously. "And who might you be?"

"My name is Carter Wilthing." At this, she gasped, knelt, looked up, and her eyes widened exponentially.

"What?" he asked? She just stared, but with a hint of.....he couldn't tell what....in her eyes.

"Yo..yo.....you are being serious, right?" she asked with awe and reverence, with a hint of adoration.

"Uhmm.....yes."

She stood quickly. "Hurry! We must not let them discover who you truly are!"

"Who am I, exactly?", he asked, curious and freaked out by her reaction.

She looked at him with reverence- more intense than before. "You are the last defense. The hope for all." At this, she turned and studied the wall intensely for a moment, then said, "Ah! Here it is!" She pushed the rock in and a portion of the wall receded and shifted to the right. "Quickly! In here!" she said quietly

"Why are we whispering?

She gave him an embarrassed look. "Sorry."

"Why am I going in the......cave?"

"Because I said so. Please!!!"

Carter did not completely trust Desireè, but he complied. "Fine. But you are explaining when I come out."

"Agh! Fine. Fine. Just go!"

"Alright!!!" He was beginning to question his decision.

He crossed his fingers while the stone door slid back into place.

CHAPTER II

DESIREÈ

As she watched the door slide shut, she was distracted by the noise of an outer door openings. She rushed back to the stone bed and laid there. Peeking through the lids of her eye lids, she watched as a guard led a prisoner down the corridor and past her cell into a room she could barely see. The decrepit sign on the door read: I TER OGA ION RO M- Interrogation Room

She knew well enough that the interrogation would take several hours- she had gone through several and had been here for long enough for her to have figured it out. She got up and hit the button to let Carter out. "I'm coming in.", she said. He looked slightly confused, but didn't protest. Not that he had a choice. She hut a different stone on the inside to close it.
