Chapter One

September 7, 2015

I ran into the bus station, accidentally running into a police officer.

"I'm sorry, Sir. Excuse me." I slowly walked over to the counter.

"Ma'am, aren't you too young to be traveling alone?" I heard the officer ask behind me.

"I'm meeting my family in New York. I've been visiting a friend for the summer." He nodded and left.

"One ticket to New York City, please," I said turning to the man in the ticket booth.

"Ah, the Big Apple. It's a nice place, isn't it?" I nodded, avoiding eye contact. "Here you go, Miss. Enjoy your trip!"

I looked at him. "Don't I have to pay?"

He winked at me. "This one is on the house. I figured you could use the money on the way there. Long trip."

"Oh, thank you." I turned from him and quickly went to find the bus.

Once I made it outside, I was happy to see it was raining; it gave me an excuse to run. I looked around me when I got on the bus; no one was on the bus yet. The bus driver smiled at me as I got on.

"Hello, ma'am! Excited for the trip? This is my favorite route. We make the most wonderful stops, have you ever been to Charleston?" I shook my head and she continued. "It's beautiful. Alas, we only stop for a few moments; only long enough to snap a few pictures."

I went to the very back as other people started shuffling onto the bus. I put my backpack in the aisle seat and pulled my legs to my chest putting my face in my knees. I couldn't cry, but it was all I wanted to do.

"Time for takeoff, folks! Everyone say good bye to Memphis," I looked up and saw that every seat was taken, except for the one beside me.

She started the bus and began pulling out of the station. My breathing began to relax, I was going to be able to make it. I looked at my watch when the bus was on the main rode, it read twelve thirty-eight in the morning. I felt a twinge of pain in my leg, I looked at it and saw blood was seeping through. I looked around again and saw that the people around me were now asleep. I grabbed my backpack and went into the bathroom, locking the door.

I took my jeans off and threw them in the sink, letting the water run on them. I sat on the toilet, opened my backpack, and grabbed the sewing kit and first aid kit. I took the peroxide wipes and began rubbing them across the cut on my leg. I was biting down on some cloth to keep from screaming. I held several sheets of toilet paper to the wound to keep the blood from getting all over the floor. I opened the sewing kit and grabbed the silk thread and the smallest sewing needle. Blood started dripping down my leg and onto the floor; I needed to act faster. I put the thread through the needle and tied multiple knots, securing the thread. I took two deep breaths and put the needle into my skin. I started sewing when tears from the pain started sliding down my cheeks. When I finished, I wrapped bandage tightly around my leg. I stood up and turned the water off. I rung the water from my jeans and grabbed the Tide pen from my backpack. I ran the Tide pen against the blood stain and after a few minutes the stain had minimized and looked like a small ketchup stain. I threw the pants into a plastic bag and put it in my backpack.
