      'Falling in love.'

' They don't say, walking in love, or strolling in love. They say falling in love because, love is a very unpredictable thing, that is completely involentary.'

'When you fall, you have no choice,              of whether or not you want to stop. Of whether or not, you'd like to fall. Or whether or not you do fall. Falling is like love. There is absolutely no way to stop it.'

I close my book.

' One day, ' I thought, ' I won't be alone. One day I'll have someone who'll love me, and someone who I can love.'

I laugh acidulously. But I guess for now I'll have to focus on school, bills, and food. Lord knows how poor I am. As a sophomore in college, I'm just trying to stay alive for goodness sake.

Birds chirp outside my window, as sunlight pours in through the cracks of the window shades.

I sit alone in my new apartment, stale
smell of cardboard adrift the air, surrounded by boxes of junk.

I supposedly have two other roommates, but since I came and unpacked my boxes so early, neither have arrived yet. So there I sat. Book in hand, on the floor. Alone again.

I never really had much of anything to call a family. And that's sugar coating it. In honest truth, I didn't have a family. I never did. I was orphaned in a home until I was a legal adult, when I had enough to get along on my own.

Heck, pretty much all of my collage payments so far have been scholarships and funds.
I'm just grateful I studied hard, or I probably wouldn't be where I am now.

Let me refrain. I definitely wouldnt be where I am now.

I flop limply on the ground and let out a breath that I apparently was holding. 'Why does life have to be so..... hard?'

The door lock clicks.

Crap.

I bolt up in a panic and rush into my unassembled room.

I hear foot steps in the living room, along with the muffled murmer of voices.

' I should act productive in case they should come in my room. I don't want to make a bad first impression.'

The voices get closer.

" Are you sure you don't want us to help you unpack? "

" Yes, Riana , I can do it. Toast probably misses you, anyway! "

" Ohhh, Amari, mi amor, I'm just going to miss you so much. You're so far away, and I just don't- "

" Mom! Don't worry, okay? I'll be just fine. I have people here with me, and I'll call everyday. I promise. "

" O-okay mi hija, I'll see you at D-Dia De Los Muertos. "

" Yo será ver tú a Dia De Los Muertos, Mamá. "

The door closes, and everything goes quiet.

An eager voice rings out, " Hello? "

I step out of the room, forcing on a smile.

" Hi! My name's Y/N! I'm your roommate."

She grins and drops the boxes she was holding, dusting off her hands.

  " Hi! My name's Amari. I'm a freshman this year. "

My smile fades lightly, ' concern ', washing over my face. " Do you need any help with your boxes? "

She waves her hand dissmisivly. " Nah, it looks like you have more boxes than I do, uhm, sorry but- how do you say your name again?

Y/N. It's Florentina Y/N.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
.    Amari was a very fun person, and after about thirty minutes, I felt like I had known her my whole life.
We had already set up both our mattresses in our bedroom, setting up our decorations and candles along with it.
   Lots and lots, of candles.

Our other roommate still hadn't shown up, and it was now 10:52 at night.

I slump to the floor in a heap of exhaustion, Amari right next to me.

She was pretty, too. With dark brown hair, and brown eyes, and beautifully sun kissed skin, with a cute Spanish accent that tied it all together.

At that moment, I had a quick realization, that I finally had a friend.

  A real friend.

I sat up stiffly, wincing at the newfound back pain I just acquired. " I'm ready for bed. It has been a long day. "

She sat up and looked at me like I had just murdered someone.

She hopped to her feet.

" Are you kidding? She asked in disbelief, " The " day ", hasn't even started! We're reckless college students, remember?

ITS TIME TO PART- AY!! "

   My eyes widened.

  A/N

Well, there you have it 😂. The first chapter~! Did you like Amari? She might get lost a little along the way... but don't forget about her! She plays an important role in the story. And what about the other roommate? I wonder who it could be....? 🤔❤️
