Chapter I

Hillford High - 1995

Looking in the mirror, I huff at my reflection. The humidity has already made my long, brown hair fluffy. I look like a poodle. Admitting defeat, I hunt for a hair-tie and put it up in a ponytail.

"Loren! It's time to go!"

"Coming!" I call back to my mum and take one last disapproving look at my reflection, before grabbing my bag and making my way out to the car.

"You feeling nervous?" Mum changes down a gear and turns on the indicator.

I shrug my shoulders and watch as three cars pass us, before she turns out onto the main road.

"A little," I admit, "but Donna said she'll be waiting for me in the car park."

Today is my first day at Hillford High, but my best friend, Donna, has been going there for the past two years. After almost a year and a half of bullying at a Catholic high school – which ended with me getting suspended after I finally stood up for myself – my parents finally agreed to send me to the local public high school. The one thing I already like about the new school, apart from my best friend being there, is that there's no stuffy uniform to wear. Those dresses are not made for a developing body. Especially when that body is developing more rapidly than its peers.

I've barely made it out of the car before I am ferociously hugged by Donna.

"OH MY GOD! I can't believe you're really here!" She squeals, before pulling out of the hug and looking past me, at my mum. "Hey, Mum!" Even though she's a year older, Donna and I have been friends since she first started at my primary school, five years ago, and we both call each other's mothers 'mum.'

"Hi, Donna! Take care of her! I'll see you when I get home from work, Loren."

"Okay. Bye Mum." I wave at her and watch her go for a while before I'm pulled away, rather forcefully by Donna.

"We need to go to the office to get your timetable. Hey, you remember Tahni and Lisa, yeah? And this is Holly. Holly only started this year, too." She is speaking so fast that I can barely keep up.

"Hey," I say shyly and follow as they lead me through a garden path and two busy hallways.

The office is a buzz with activity as I step up nervously to the front desk and introduce myself. The office-lady barely looks up from her screen. She clicks on her keyboard and then reaches over to collect something from the printer.

"Here's your timetable. Your homeroom is Mister Hibberts class. We're here," she points at a map that's taped down to the desk. "When you walk out, turn left and walk down to E block –"

"It's okay, Miss Jones, we'll show her where it is." Donna pulls at my arm and I am jolted away before I can even thank her.

As soon as we get out of the airconditioned office the humidity hits me in the face and I can almost feel my hair curl in protest.

"Robot Jones," Tahni giggles.

"She so needs to get laid," Donna adds. The girls all laugh hysterically.

I tune out of the conversation and read my timetable. I feel myself fall behind the group, but instinctively follow their chatter and laughter. That is, until I hit something hard.

Two rather large hands grip my upper arms and push me back gently. "Shit. Sorry! Are you okay?" A deep voice shakes me from my confusion.

I open my mouth to apologise, but freeze when I look up to see two impossibly bright blue eyes looking back at me.

"Oh my God! Loren! You're still as clumsy as ever!" I hear Donna's familiar laugh. She pulls at me and blue eyes' hands fall from my arms. "Hey, Isaac, sorry about that. She's so unco!"

I look to Donna in annoyance, and hold in the urge to tell her to shut up.

"Sorry," I blurt out instead to stop her from talking for me. I look back up at Isaac, but this time I take in all of him. He's tall, and built more like a man than a boy in high school. I wonder if maybe he's a teacher, but the bag slung over his shoulder tells me he's not. He's in jeans, a tee and a black leather jacket. He looks like the kind of man mothers warn you about. He raises an arm and slicks back his ear length hair. My eyes follow, taking note of its dark colour and its striking contrast to his bright eyes. His full lips turn up at the corner into a lopsided smile.

"Don't sweat it."

"Okay, bye!" Donna says emphatically.

Before I can say anything else, Donna is pulling me away. I hold his gaze as she drags me past him. I know I'm staring, but he's staring too. And he's still smiling that lopsided smile.

"See you 'round, Loren." His smile widens.

I smile back and hold up my hand in farewell, before turning and following Donna and her friends, who are all looking rather bemused at me.

"I think someone has eyes for Loren," Holly sing songs with a giddy smile.

"Isaac will fuck anything that moves," Donna retorts crassly. Holly's face drops a little and the subject swiftly changes.

I look back to try and get a glimpse of Isaac, but he's lost among the crowd.

I only half listen as Donna and her friends discuss some drama that happened over the school holidays, with Donna doing most of the talking. I feel a sense of relief when the bell goes and they drop me off at my homeroom. As much as I love my best friend, she is a much stronger personality than I am, and it can get very tiring sometimes.

After homeroom, I have maths, history and creative arts. I manage to find my way to each class thanks to a girl called Emilia, who just happens to have all three classes the same as me. It is while we are walking to creative arts that I see Isaac again. He's walking and talking with a small group of friends, but he sees me and smiles his lopsided smile as we walk past each other. It is only when he is out of sight that I realise I was staring at him like a total idiot with my mouth slightly agape.

"Ugh! He is so hot!" Emilia says huskily.

"Who?" I ask, trying my best to sound aloof.

"Isaac Matthews," she sighs wistfully.

"The tall guy, yeah?"

"Yeah," she sighs again. "Too bad he's got that whole on again off again thing happening with Michelle," she pouts, before opening the classroom door and motioning for me to join her inside.
