Melanie.  A day goes by, then week, month, year. She never kept track of time anymore. Her mother is a single parent. Whenever Melanie thought of her mother, she thought of an older woman. Sort of a red and white flannel pattern. They're a worn out family. Losing her father and siblings, she's an only child.  The blue girl usually sits in her bedroom. The small room has stained carpet and torn wallpaper, but she didn't mind. She'd draw or play her piano. Every key she taps, she can feel her heart beat faster. "The sound is like dripping water",  she says softly so only she can hear it. Her father used to say that. She remembered how his voice cracked and sounded so yellow. It was deep, but when he spoke to her, it was perfect. Shes heard all the keys so many times. She knows them better than her own name. Melanie just shook her head. She continued pressing on the pedals.

Her mother and her are a pretty poor family, but they get used to it. The brown-haired girl goes to a small elementary school, an old school in a sad town.  She always thought life was so gray, she knew it was. She couldn't feel the life. She always felt that type of gray. The kind she feels when she picks a flower or accidentally drops a glass cup.
