I love the rain. It was one of the only things that could always make me just a little happier, even if only temporary. I could use all the help I could get as I looked out the window of my step-mom’s beaten up jeep.

I am on my way to live with her and my biological father. I used to live with my mother in the Bronx up until a few days ago. My mother got involved with a drug dealer boyfriend after she lost her job and then ended up overdosing and killing herself. The police found her in an alley behind Carlo’s Pizza with a hand full of needles. My mom had been a great mother to me for the first 15 years of my life. However after I turned 16 my mother turned to drugs as a way to solve her problems, it didn’t work.

She started to not even come home at nigh, and refrained from talking to me as much as possible. I even went to live with my best friend Lilly for a little bit. However my mother soon found out and made me move back in claiming that I was creating too much trouble for Lilly’s family.

After the autopsy that pronounced my mother dead the police called my father to let him know that I was his responsibility now, at least until I turned 18.

So that is why I am sitting here looking out the window to see the tiny town of Forks speeding by me. My dad moved here to be with my step-mom, Jenny, right after they got married.

“I think you’re going to like it here Melisa,” Jenny said shooting me a smile, “I decorated the guest bedroom for you, it looks amazing.” she finished excitedly. I just sent her a fake smile in response. We arrived at the house quickly and I jumped out of the passengers side. I hadn’t been to my dad’s house in years. It looked almost the same as I remembered it. It was and old wooden house with white paint. I could see the guest bedroom window on the third floor.

“Mel!” I turned to see my dad running towards me, he stopped and gave me a huge hug, “how have you been, sweetheart?” he asked me with worry in his eyes,

“Fine, I’m fine.” I said while slightly shrugging my shoulders. My dad shot me a concerned look that was quickly replace by a calm cool expression

“Well, why don’t you go check out your new room” he suggested, I nodded and walked up the front steps up to the house. As I reached to close the door behind me I could hear my dad and Jenny whispering in hushed voices. I chose to ignore them and headed up the stairs to the third floor. The third floor consisted of Jenny’s studio and the guest room, not my room. Jenny is a fashion designer who designs clothes for big name companies. I sighed and opened the white wooden door leading into my new room. My old twin sized bed was pushed against the wall with the big glass window right next to it. The room was a light grayish purple, as supposed to the burgundy it used to be. On the bed was a white quilt with purple flowers embroidered on it. On the other side of the room was a desk and a dresser.

Normally I would be overjoyed to have this room, it was absolutely perfect just like Jenny said. However the huge hole in my chest that had been formed shortly after my mom died prevented me from getting too excited.

Dad, Jenny and I spent the night hauling my things out of the back of the car up to my new room. I organized and unpacked all of my clothes by myself, despite Jenny’s best efforts. Dad and Jenny went to bed around ten but I stayed up sitting under my bedroom window listening to the rain hitting the window. I pulled out my ipod and shoved my headphones over my ears, right now music was all I could think of to do. I leaned my head back against the wall and felt myself slipping into a restless sleep.

When I woke up the first thing I thought was how I could smell the rain. Opening my eyes I realized that I was no longer in my bedroom, I was in the middle of the woods behind my dad’s house. I whipped my head around, the rain was pouring down on me as the wind made the huge trees sway side to side.

“Excuse me, Miss” a voice said from behind me, I let out a yelp as I spun around. In front of me stood a boy. His pale skin almost appeared to glow in the moonlight. His wavy long hair hit just above his shoulders. And his eyes were a color that didn’t even have a name. The closest I could think of was a dark brown honey color. To state it simply, this boy was beautiful, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you” The boy said as his eyes burrowed into mine as though he were looking for something. I rightened myself and tried to avoid his gaze,

“Oh, no, it’s fine” I said quickly as I wondered, what the hell is he doing out in the woods at a time like this, he smiled calmly at me.

“So, not that it’s any of my business” he said with a slightly southern accent, “but what is a young lady like yourself doing out in the woods so late at night?” I laughed,

“I could ask you the same question” I stated simply, at this the boy chuckled

“That is very true,” he said taking a pause and looking at me. I suddenly became very self conscious, I was wearing a blue tank top and some old grey basketball shorts. Basically I looked like shit. “Where are my manners, my name is Jasper Hale, it’s a pleasure to meet you Miss…” he looked at me with a cute expectant grin

“Melisa, Melisa Jones” I stuttered, he just smile and took my hand

“Miss Jones” he said bending down and placing a light kiss on my hand. I blushed bright red and was suddenly very thankful for the it being so dark. Jasper looked back up at me and smiled, “Perhaps I should get you inside, I would hate to see you catch a cold” I nodded

“Yeah, I should be getting back” I said as I turned around and started heading back to the house, “nice to meet you, Jasper” I said turning around to wave, he just smiled again at me

“The pleasure is all mine Miss Jones, goodnight and sleep well” he said before turning and vanishing into the thick woods.
