Her parents put her to bed and tucked her in. She internally wept at the loss of their protection.
"W-what about the monster?" the little girl asked slightly frantic as she turned her head to the foot of the bed and looked back at her parents. Her parents looked at her sadly and sighed.
"Honey, you're 6 now almost 7. You shouldn't be scared of a monster anymore," her mother looked exhausted while her father spoke.
"But it-" she didn't get to finish. Her parents were already at the door and closing it too far for comfort.
"Good night sweetheart," her mother whispered.
"You'll keep the door open?" she asked shakily.
"Yes, honey,"
"And the kitchen light on," she asked even more scared and warily as the time grew later. Her mother nodded and the little girl tried to tell herself it wasn't real. She was about to do the same thing she's done every night ever since she learned the rules but stopped herself.
"You. Are. Not. Real," She whispered to herself. Trying to find a reasonable excuse to risk the monster seeing her. A reasonable excuse to risk her life. She didn't want to be so hot anymore under her covers. She wanted to be able to stick her foot out of the blanket and over the side of the bed, she wanted to be able to take off her blanket and not fear that the monster will jump on her and take what it claimed as its. She didn't want to be scared anymore. So for the first night in years, she poked her head out of her blanket instead of hiding. She flattened her back and laid there staring at the foot of her bed waiting for the monster.
But it never came. She smiled to herself at the fact she faced her fear and saw her parents were right. It wasn't real. So she closed her eyes and tried to fall asleep, but she still felt eerie. Then almost like something switched, she felt the fear seep into her body. She felt its eyes on her. She felt the air close around her face almost like it was suffocating her unless she opened her eyes. She felt the suspense surrounding the room and she knew why.
It was here
It was staring at her
It was forcing her to open her eyes
She slowly complied as she hated the pressure on her face and met eye to eye with the monster. It sickly smiled, showing off its sharpened teeth. Its teeth she knew were probably the sharpest things ever discovered. Its eyes were so large; with no pupil that they glowed. You couldn't see it's body...only its face. It's always too dark to see its body and the little girl never wanted to see it.
