The first Friday of every month is always fun. It's a chance for me to escape the adulating world. I get to hang out with my friends at the Freo markets. Most of the time there's at least four of us. We all join our money and pig out on sugary foods. But today, there are only two of us. There's Kat, the adorable red-head, and me, Freya the fierce blond. Okay, maybe not so fierce but you get the point.
Anyways, it's currently springtime here in Australia. Not the crappy spring where Mother Nature can't decide if it's still winter or not. The nice spring where the sun is out and birds are chirping. The Freo markets are thriving with locals and tourists alike.
Kat and I make our way out of the markets with a bag of popcorn each. We find a quiet bench to sit on. It's just away from the busy hustle but close enough to
people-watch. As strangers pass we make up extravagant backstories while eating our popcorn.I point to a man walking past. He's wearing a neat black suit and fancy shoes. The catch is, he looks like he hasn't slept in weeks. His hair is all messed up and the bags under his eyes are completely obvious.
"He could be a secret spy."
My voice is muffled with a mouth full of popcorn.
Kat tries to imitate me. "Ee-ku-e-uh-fee-fe-hwa. That's what you sound like. Hasn't your mother ever told you not to speak with your mouth full?"
I swallow the popcorn and prepare my witty comeback. "Only when she caught me. You talk like that every day."
"I do not."
"Sure, sure. What I said was, 'He could be a secret spy.'"
"With a face like that I hope not," Kat scoffed.
"Maybe he's been working long hours," I suggest. "It could be his first day off in a long time."
"What if he time travelled through the prison?"
"Why would he be wearing a suit?" I ask. "That prison is really old."
"I was just trying to come up with something better than a secret spy."
We moved on from the suit man and went on to other interesting people. This continued on until a crisis occurred. The popcorn ran out. Instead of going back to get more, Kat and I decide to just head home. We had parked close to each other. This meant that we could walk together.
"The devil is coming! He'll destroy us all. Let us help. We can save your soul from eternal damnation," A man on the street yelled at Kat. It's the man from earlier. The one I thought could be a secret spy.
"Might be a bit late for that, buddy." Kat retorted. She started to walk away but the man grabbed the hood of her jumper.
"Let her go," I say firmly. "We're not interested. Best not press the matter."
The man's eyes lit up as though he had just discovered the cure to world hunger. "I can see it in you. Your soul. It's plagued with terrible darkness. We can help. You'll be pure, like your friend."
"Lay one finger on her and so help me you will regret it," Kat snarled. Her eyes flashed black.
Lightning flashed and a once sunny day is now a storm.
"Demon," the man gasped. "Be gone!"
So my friend's a demon. Great. I guess that would explain the random howling dogs and the constant smell of rotting eggs.
Kat chuckled. "We'll be going then." She began to walk towards me but stopped. "And by the way, the devil won't destroy you. You'll destroy each other."
