This story is a little longer than the others probably because I though it was going to go somewhere but Writers Block so yeah. I might change it up as well not sure what to do with it yet but I will find something ~ Von-Wick
The sun is starting to rise over the mountain by the time I make it back home. I had gone out a few hours ago to look for some game in the forest. Packing a large beast over my shoulders I make my way to the butcher's room by the stables I take care of the new food to feed all of the kids. I leave it for gramps to take care of as I enter the house 3 children run up to me excitedly. "Samantha!" They scream, plowing me over I land with a thud the children are giggling and laughing I sit up and they immediately answer the question I hadn't asked yet. "A letter from the Royal Guard Came not too long ago for you. They hand me the letter and sit at the dinner table waiting for me and the other kids to sit with them. The custom at the house if you have exciting news and a letter everyone celebrates together. Soon everyone is sitting at the table even gramps is there. I rip open the letter with excitement and the letter states:
"To Samuel Gray, Son of Saara and Marcom Gray.
We have accepted your application, You will be required to show your abilities in the Kingdom capital. Times have changed and the royal family is spectating to see what this year's contestants hold. The queen has offered to pay for the accommodations for all applicants. You have 3 moon changes to hone your skills and become a new member of the Royal Guard. Sincerely General Jonathan Clayfield." The letter was short and to the point with all needed information. After I finished reading the letter the children were either whooping and jumping for joy or running to me crying. Gramps sat silently at the other end of the table, looking down at his hands, his shoulders slump slightly and he lets out a deep sigh. Noticing the change in the atmosphere with Gramps the children all file out of the room.
"Gramps" I start. He holds up a hand.
"My dear Sam, If The Guard finds out you will be killed." His eyes fill with tears "However, my dear All of us here are proud of you. don't let us down." He compliments. "You need to work on your combat skills, I can train you for another moon, However, I will need to get help from an old friend 3 towns over. I will write a letter for them to come down and visit and help. Not only is this a big risk, it will also be a big help with the family." Gramps stands and hugs me and walks away scolding the kids by the door listening in to our conversation. Going to my room I change clothes to my practice garments. Leaving the house to the stables, I ready Charming, my brown and white horse who had either sat in the snow and the color never left or he played in the mud with his face. Charming is a Horse with a personality, Different names to satisfy that. He constantly would get in trouble as a colt and would smile when caught, his name became Charming for the whole reason is that he thinks he is charming. He's a Narcissistic horse with amazing loyalty, He has incredible speed and endurance.
"Let's do this," I say as him and I take off.
Days, weeks passed and I have gotten better. A letter came informing Gramps that He could not make it however he left a list of things that I should practice, and a book to demonstrate if Gramps was incapable. Before I knew it it was 4 Days before the testing battles begin. it takes 3 days to get there and that leaves me a day before to practice and rest. My clothes are packed and my weapons are ready 2 daggers, a Sword, and a bow. These are my weapons and my precious babies. I tie down everything to Charming and hand him an apple before we leave. The 12 kids in the house rush up to me.
As each pass by I say their name, embrace them, then plant a sloppy wet kiss on their cheeks
"Caroline, Amber, May, Elizabeth, Kimberly, Charolett, Max, Cole, Charlie, Philip, Shaun, Zander" After I went through the notions of them all, Gramps walks up embraces me kisses my cheek and whispers a soft goodbye before letting me go. I swing myself up onto Charming and head down the road listening to the shouts of the kids and a single tear slips down my cheek. I am going to miss this place, but I am doing this for them.
Three days later, and I am just outside the city walls. The sun is low to the west, daylight fading quickly. Tired and hungry I make my way through the gates, not as Samantha Riley Gray but as Samuel Ryan Gray. Samantha is now in the past and she will have to stay there. I make my way to "The Queen's Ring Tavern & Stable" For food and a place to stay for myself and my pampered horse. After getting Charming settled and fed, I make my way inside. An older woman Greets me at the door, Her eyes sunken in and laugh lines line her face.
With a bright smile, the woman addresses me "Welcome dear to The Queen's Ring, I am assuming you are an applicant for the Knight Battles?"
"Yes, ma'am I am," I say trying to make my voice deeper without sounding ridiculous
"Well then pick anywhere to sit and I will be right out with some hot steamy food for you to eat and a key to your room." She replies with a wink and walking away. I find a table to sit at as I wait for the food and key. Not too long after the woman reappears with food and a key.
"Have a nice stay honey and good luck at the Battles" she walks away quickly swiftly maneuvering through the crowd. Quickly eating I go to my room to sleep. Quickly falling asleep, I am soon overtaken by the terrors.
Startled awake, I sit up quickly with a gasp. My body covered in sweat and I am shivering, my bed and blankets are drenched. Being too afraid I quickly wash myself with the clean cloth and basin on the other side of the room and ready for the day not bothering to hide my bust. Opening the curtains to let fresh air in I am met with a still dark sky with light beginning to show above the mountains. I make my way to the stables locking my door before I leave. Charming groggily gets up from laying down as soon as he hears me coming into his stall.
"No need I am coming to lay with you for a while, okay buddy?" I say as he flops back down, Plopping down beside his head he raises his neck for me to scoot under as soon as I am there he plops his head in my lap and lets out a deep sigh. Petting his forehead and behind his ears, he is soon fast asleep and snoring. About an hour passes before Charming and I are startled by a voice and a slamming stall door.
"Dumb mare, I was supposed to be here yesterday night." the mean voice says before stomping his way to the tavern. I stand up and see that the once empty stall next to charming was now occupied by a beautiful Black and white spotted mare. I leave Charmings stall to get a closer look at her to see she is bleeding on her front left leg. quickly getting an apple, pail of water, and fresh cloth I address the wound. I clean it up as best I can and wrap it. Giving the Mare the apple for allowing me to help and being a wonderful patient girl I pet her and give her love like she was my own horse. While doing so Charming snorts and stomps his foot at me.
"Quit being jealous Charming. You are spoiled rotten and the beautiful mare is neglected, show a little compassion." I scold. Charming stops his fit but gives a little attitude by turning around.
"What a spoiled brat he is," I say
"He might be but he is loyal" a woman's voice answers. I turn around quickly to see a woman holding hands with a little boy around the age of 4 or 5. The woman's face was bright and beautiful. her eyes resembled the sky in may ways with hour blue they are. The boy had green eyes with a bright sparkle in them his hair bouncing and swaying because he is bouncing on his toes with excitement. t. The woman smiles and says
"My apologies my dear. I didn't mean to scare you like that. I was bringing little William here to see the horses." I quickly regain my composure
"No worries Ma'am, No harm was done," looking down at the little boy "So this is William Correct?" The little boy nods his head shyly with a small dimpled smile. "Well William my name is Samantha and this-" I point to my stubborn horse "is Charming." William runs over joyously to Charming's stall and starts to climb the door. Charming snorts and lightly pushes his head into the boy's shoulder. William giggles and pets charming with the utmost care and love. Smiling I walk over to the two.
"William, would you like to ride Charming?" His whole face lights up and a bright smile graces the boys face. Looking back to his mother for approval, she places her finger on her cheek and looks at him with mischievousness glistening in her eyes "Hmmm, I don't know William. The horse looks rather big for you and he could hurt you." She says
"Oh but mother!" His little body jumps from the door and runs to his mother's side. "I will be safe! I promise" his voice holding a whining tone. As he looks back at Charming his mother winks at me and smiles. This woman is genius. Playing along with his mothers game I kneel next to him and say
" William Your mother is right, He is a big scary horse. You could get hurt very badly and your mother would be worried sick about you." I say trying to hold back a smile. However, this boy just wouldn't give up. He was determined to ride a horse. a few minutes of him begging and her contemplating she finally says
"Oh alright, you can ride the beautiful beast, but you have to promise me you will be careful and it has to be okay with Miss Samantha." She says with a smile. He runs into her arms thanking her again and again, all I can do is look at them from the stall door and smile.
William runs at me with excitement and he states in a very serious manner "Miss Samantha, May I have your, uh" he stops to think of the word he wants to use, his mother whispers "permission sweetheart, the word you are looking for is permission"
"Oh yeah! Miss Samantha, May I have your permission to ride Charming for a few minutes?" he says with hope and determination blazing like a fire in his eyes.
"Yes, you may." I look at his mother " Ma'am for one so young he has beautiful manners, Let me saddle him up for you and you can go get an apple for him." I have Charming saddled up and ready for the young boy when he comes back with not only 1 apple but he has a whole basket for him!
I had spent the first half of my day with William and his mother. They had sat with me and talked and had a good time. They left around the second meal is served. I went back to the stalls to check on the mare. She was doing better than before. I was feeding her and cleaning the wound when a man walks in raging.
"What do you think you are doing" He screams. The mare jumps and backs away slightly.
"I am taking care of a mare who has an injured leg" I respond with a shy voice
"Well she is not injured and she is fine, all she is is a dumb horse who is terrible and should be put out of her misery."
"Excuse me, sir, This mare is beautiful. she is calm and sweet. Maybe if you treated your animals fairly they would possibly make you proud. But all you do is yell at her and call her a dumb horse." Taking a deep breath I continue on "She is smart and an amazing horse. if you won't take care of her then you can leave her with me. I will pay for her and you can leave her to me." I say as I seethe with hatred for the man who mistreats an animal that is loyal.
"How dare you woman, You have no right to tell me how to take care of my animal." The man walks up to me, he brings his arm up and swings it down for his palm to connect with my face. The stinging pain on my face begins to burn. He looks at me with rage. Evil emits off of him in waves, The darkness in his thoughts were showing in his body language and in his eyes. Still standing in the same spot I spit in his face.
"You are a coward." I say simply "Keep your horse but when she dies on you because you didn't take care of her it is all on you" I leave the stables and walk into the tavern.
After the incedint in the stables I enter my room and begin my training process for the rest of the day.
The Next day I am up before the sun touches the mountain tops. I am one of many who showed up to the areana early. this day I am now Samuel Gray and I will be for a long time. Soon Every contestant is in the wating field. Our names are called and then we are given a scroll with battle times. The first battle was a boy with a small scrawny figure and a man who looked like a bear with no fur. Watching all of the battles just seemed to make me more nervous. Before I knew it I was next on the list. The man I was up against was a brute of a guy, It's the bear guy from the first fight. The man was infact all I thought he was, a Bear man thing. he was all force he would tire easy. me being small and quick gave me the advantage. We walk in to the arena and shake hands. The sun is starting to rise over the mountain by the time I make it back home. I had gone out a few hours ago to look for some game in the forest.
