After a restless night, I woke up to the sound of my alarm screeching at me to get up. I got up, changed into my clothes, and climbed down the staircase as my mom called me into the kitchen.
“Your lunch is packed but, I won’t be able to pick you up after school, so you will have to catch a ride there and back today,” my mom said sweetly.
“I’ll just call Trish.”
“Ok sweetheart. I have to go to work, so I will see you when I get home.” She replied as she kissed my forehead and left the house.
After I had called Trish, I decided to go on Facebook while I waited. I started to go through my feed when it alerted me that someone messaged me. I instantly regretted clicking the notification as I saw Kira’s name pop up on the screen. She said the usual things she tells me every day like; I was anorexic and a slutty nerd with no friends. It happened frequently so I had gotten used to it but it still sometimes hurt me to read. I was brought out of my thoughts when I heard a car horn outside my house. I lifted up my backpack, slung it over my shoulder, and closed the door behind me, making sure it was locked.
“Hey Trish, thanks for driving me to school,” I told my best friend as I hopped into the car closing the door behind me.
“No problem, as long as I get to spend time with my best friend, you can ask anytime.” she replied giving me a warm hug. The engine rumbled as the car started. “So Ally,” she began, “how are things going between you and Austin?” she asked wiggling her eyebrows at me.
“I’m not really sure. Yesterday he came over to my house, but he had to leave because Kira wanted him over at her house again.” I answered trying not to let the thought bring me down.
“Doesn’t she do that every time he comes over?!”
All I could do was nod as Trish gripped the steering wheel tightly, making her knuckles turn white.
“It’s probably just a coincidence.” I said trying to calm her down.
“But Ally…”
“It’s fine. Anyway we’re at school.”
She looked at me sadly, and then stepped out of the car closing the door. I sat in the car watching her walk into the main building when all of a sudden the car door opened.
“Are you going to just stay there princess?” a familiar voice asked.
I smiled looking up at Austin who mirrored my expression. He gave me his hand, which I graciously took, and he gently pulled me from the car. Wrapping his arm around my waist, I ignored the tingling sensation and gave him a side hug.
“Missed me already?” he remarked looking down into my eyes.
“Cocky much?” I replied as he chuckled and led me to my locker. I put in my combination and got my books for first period when a familiar voice made me feel like I wanted to run away.
“Austin! Baby, I missed you so much!”
I closed my locker, seeing them suck each other’s faces off in the middle of the hallway. I sighed causing them both to pull away.
“Oh Ally, I didn’t see you there.” She wore a smirk as she waited for me to respond.
“Hi Kira, it’s nice to see you, too,” I mumbled back looking everywhere but at the couple who stood less than a foot in front of me.
“My two girls are finally getting along.” Austin said, pulling us both into a hug. I immediately pushed away from his grip and told them I had to go, receiving a glare from Kira and a confused expression from Austin. “But class doesn’t start ‘til…” he started, but I had already run the opposite direction trying to get as far away as possible. I soon found my first period classroom and as I entered I noticed that I was early, as usual. The teacher sent a nod in my direction as I took my seat and grabbed my notebook out of my bag. I decided to continue writing the song I had been working on, since class wouldn’t start for another ten minutes.
Last summer we met.
We started as friends.
I can't tell you how it all happened.
Then autumn it came.
We were never the same.
Those nights, everything felt like magic.
I will never forget the day Austin and I met. It was mid-July and I was working at my dad’s music store. While I was cleaning the instruments, I noticed a blond haired boy walk in with a boy around the same age but instead of having blond hair, he was a redhead. They walked over to the drum set we had on display and examined it closely. When I turned my back towards them, I heard a loud noise coming from their direction. To my surprise, the blond was playing the drums while his friend videotaped him. You would have thought that he would at least have played the drums with drumsticks. But where the drumsticks should have been, were two corndogs. Though I usually wouldn’t have interacted with people like them, I soon found myself walking over to the strange duo. From the moment we interacted, I knew that we would end up becoming friends.
“Okay class, time to take your seats. Open up your books and turn to page twenty-five.” After hearing my teacher’s voice mention more students, I immediately stashed my notebook into my backpack, just as the bell rang.
After class, I was taking my biology textbook out of my locker when the locker door snapped close.
“Well if it isn’t Ms. Ally Dawson.”
“Not now, Kira, I have to go to class,” I said with a tone of slight impatience
“What made you so confident this morning?”
She twirled a strand of hair as she looked me dead in the eye. Right when I was about to say something back, she pushed me on to the floor and kicked me in the side. I winced in pain as the she-devil cackled over me.
“What’s wrong Ally? Can’t find Austin to protect you?”
She continued to kick me until I coughed up blood onto her shoes.
“You bitch! These shoes cost me hundreds of dollars!”
I started to stand up, only to collapse back on the floor. Kira wiped off the blood that had stained her platinum white heels as she crossly mumbled words that only Satan would appreciate.
“You, Ally Dawson, are a waste of space. Why don’t you do us all a favor and jump off a cliff?!” she said smirking. I leaned up against the lockers, watching her strut down the hallway to her friends. As if it couldn’t get worse, Austin turned the corner and saw me coughing while holding my stomach.
“Ally, are you okay?”
His concerned voice rang in my ears as I tried to reply, but before I could answer, darkness greeted me with open arms as I fell unconscious.
