You ran up the steps to the entrance of Kendricks Academy. You couldn't be late, not today. You reached the door and as you grabbed the handle it flew open, nocking you on to the ground.

"Oh Lord, I'm sorry about that" said the boy who had opened the door, he leaned down and offered you a hand. He had dark brownish black hair and hazel eyes. He looked to be about your age, maybe a year or 2 older. You took his hand and he pulled you to your feet.

"Are you alright, I hope I didn't hurt you?" he spoke has he helped dust you off in the least awkward way possible.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. I'm just running a bit late, I wasn't watching where I was going." you say apologetically.

"I completely understand. Anyway, I'll let you be on your way." he smiled and bowed his head a little as a polite goodbye. He then moved to walk past you.

"I'm (y/n), by the way, I don't think I got your name." you said as you turned to him as he walked away. He turned to you with a mix of a smile and a smirk on his face.

"Arthur" he stated proudly.

"Like the king?" you asked playfully.

"Precisely." Arthur said before turning on his heels and walking down the path. You smiled to yourself before remembering that you were running late and you quickly opened the door and entered the building.

You sprinted to the end of the hall where the headmistress and your best friend Lacey stood waiting for you.

"Five minutes late, Ms.(l/n). Please do remember that you are be graded as we speak." spoke the headmistress.

"Of course, Dr.Hess. I'm sorry, Dr.Hess." you apologized as you stared at your feet.

"It's alright. Now please follow me" said Dr.Hess and the 2 of you followed. You all walked down the hall to the head office and walked in. The room of nicely and most likely expensively furnished. In the center of the room the floor was covered in a large piece of plastic. Dr.Hess walked to her desk as Lacey and you walked to and stood in the middle of the room. The headmistress looked at the 2 of you and spoke.

"Lacey. (y/n). You have both conquered many trails here at Kendricks, either through natural talent," she directed her gaze at you, "or good old-fashioned hard work." she then looked to Lacey, "But today, today we'll learn which of you matriculates to the next level of train. This organization does important work, ladies, work which allows millions of people to sleep safely in their beds at night. But in order to do this work, to protect those people, we need cadets who will employ their skills and execute orders without question. And so..." she stepped toward a small table in front of you. On it was something wrapped in a piece of leather. She lifted the top flaps off of the object, revealing a clean silver knife. "...only one of you will be leaving this room. Good luck" she then left the room.

You and Lacey stared at each other. You were terrified. Neither of you would ever want to hurt the other, but if you did both of you would be able to execute an attack with ease. Lacey stepped forward and grabbed the blade.

"(n/n), I don't want to do this, but I have you, I'm sorry" you stared at her in fear for a moment before getting a position to defend yourself. But you didn't need to. Quickly, Lacey swung the blade into her chest.

"Lace!" you screamed and cought her as she fell to the ground. You laid her on her back and held her head in your lap. "Why?" you asked with tears in your eyes.

"Because," she coughed up some blood, "I know you'll do great things." she smiled up at as the light faded from her eyes.

"Lace? L-Lacey?" you put a hand on her cooling cheek. A tear left your eye and fell to her face. She was gone.

You took a deep breath and wiped away your tears. You pulled the blade out of her chest and set up the room to make you look at if the 2 of you fought. You put a small cut on your cheekbone and a stab wound on your shoulder as the final touches. Once you were done, you left the room and walked back down the hall to find Dr.Hess waiting for you.

"It's down. She...uh...She did well." you started to tear up again.

"We can't all survive, no matter how much we want to. Now head to the infirmary and get you wounds tended to" spoke the Headmistress. You nodded and left, knife still in hand.
