Chapter One: Attack what's left
"Mother, Father!" I reached out for them as I ran from the creature.
These things of darkness had a way of claiming the lives of the innocent. Not just the innocent either. "How cute, you htink you can get away," one snickered, stopping me in my tracks. They mastered an incredible speed of such that no living being could comprehend. The lady-like creature was sinister looking as she slowly backed me against the house. She laughed a little, "You worthless human child!" She licked her lips, "I hope you're as tasty as your mother was."
"You evil witch!" I spat, hoping to stop her from leaning any closer. "Hm, close," she whispered in my ear, "But I think vampire is the word you're looking for." I closed my eyes as I felt the hair on her head rub against my face. Creatures like her gave a new meaning to personal space. I jerked my head backwards, hitting the house. I didn't like someone being this close to me. It was especially uncomfortable near my neck.
"You bitch!" I opened my eyes as I felt cold blood slpatter across my face. I turned and watched as my father took his favorite dagger out of the side of her head. It was something most children expected from their parents; protection. But this protection was different. It was way more intense. "Rose, come on," he took me by the hand and we dashed off, headed towards the wild horses. Every summer they slept beneath the trees, and there we could find a hiding place. Although it wouldn't do much good; vampires had a keen sense of smell. All of the sudden I found myself thrown up against on of the trees, startling the horses. I slumped to the ground trying to catch my breath.
"Rose!" I looked up to see father a distance from me. Three or four of them held him back. "Ah, Rose," A female dismounted her horse behind the men and started her way towards me. At a human pace undoubtedly. "You have such a pretty face," she smiled sweetly, "Your pale skin is pretty too, but youy need to get a tad mor sun my child." She came close, maybe five feet away, and I scrambled to my feet.
She held her hand out gently. "Don't do it Rose!" I tried ignoring him, trying to think of what he would do. But my mind seemed jumbled and fuzzy. The only clear thought was what I would do. Do what you would do, I told myself, do it now.
I gathered up my strength and punched her in the neck. The only thing it seemed to do, sadly enough, was piss her off. "How dare you?!" She slapped me accross the face, sending me to the ground. "Leave now and take her father to my place in the South," she spat in the dirt and in the same instant, they had my father tied up in ropes and put him on the back of her horse. "I won't break my promise," my eyes flickered to him, "I'll do whatever it takes to protect you!" His words were true. He never broke a promise previous, and he promised to be there to protect me.
I looked at the ground. Maybe it was my turn to protect him; to protect all I have left. I took a deep breath. I was fifteen and it was time I made my own decisions in this. "You hit like a lady."
"What?"
"I said," I stood up and punched her in the jaw, "You hit like a freaking girl!" That time I sent her back a little. "You obviously can't hit like a man." This time I put my body weight into it and punched her in the gut.
Now I had her attention, as well as the others'. After all, they couldn't just leave their master alone like this. Especially since now we were in a fist fight. It was seductive vampire woman versus, well, strong young woman. "Go now!" She exclaimed, and they started off into the dark night. "Slayers stick together!" I yelled back.
Father obviously approved, because I saw him smile before the darkness took him away. But doing so was a mistake on my part. The next thing I knew, the lady grabbed me by the arms and threw me against the ground. What was with them and knocking the wind out of me? Was it amusing to them?
"Bad idea little girl," she took me by the shoulders and brought me to sit up. Well, sort of, if I wasn't in so much pain. "Admitting you want to slay, suggests that you'd make a perfect vampire." She extended her fangs before me. I closed my eyes again, knowing I was far too weak to fight back. I needed something with silver to fight now. But even then, it might not help. The last time she threw me on the floor had my head spinning.
"No." A strong voice barged in. The voice of a strong young man. I opened my eyes as he swung and axe, chopping her head off. The cold blood splatterd on the other side of my face, almost mixing with the blood that fell from my cheek. "Are you alright young child?" He held a hand out as if to help me up. Hell, he could pick me up, he was so tall. Beside him was a dark haired man who looked at me with question.
I stared at his hand for a moment. He did save me, and he did slay her. Only the living could kill the dead and he was obviously living. "I-I'm fine, thank you," I grabbed his hand and he pulled me to my feet. Sadly, I found myself stumbling. But the dark haired man caught me.
"No, you're not," he looked down at me with dark eyes. Eyes I couldv'e sworn I'd seen before. "Let us go before they send reenforcements." I agreed. Any place was better than here.
