I sit in the booth half listening to Egon talk on the phone and half listening to the fight playing by the bar. A bunch of men stare up at the TV screen while a vampire and ghoul-hybrid duke it out. Faris Delton and Helios Ryne circle each other in the ring when Helios swings at the vampire. Faris jumps out of the way in a blur and nails Helios on the head.
The ghoul hit the ground as ohs sound off and I silently chant for Helios to stand up. Come on, Come on, Stand up, I repeat in my head but Helios remains down. Damn you worthless ghoul! I have my paycheck riding on you. Get your pale ass up. He wasn't moving making me bite the inside of my lip. My nails tap against the table my eyes focus on the screen. The ref begins his count down and I can feel my money slipping away.
"One," the man steps over Helios and takes Faris by the wrist before lifting his arm in the air. Some men cheer while I just go limp in my seat. My wallet sharing Helios' pain.
"Well thanks for nothing," Egon said with a little hostility. I look at him as he places his cell in his pocket. He glances at me and scowl. "You look like death."
"My ambition for a big pay day just died." I gesture to myself, "this is the mourning phase."
He huffs and straightens his jacket, "Sucks to be you." He lifts up his hand to the bar. "Two beers," he looks at me to say something before snapping his gaze back at the bar. "And none of that Fey shit."
I perk up, "but Fey alcohol is amazing."
Egon shakes his head, "that shit can kill even the most powerful demons. How you can stomach that poison I'll never know."
"It's because I'm strong."
"Sure you are," his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Compared to me you have the strength of a yorkie." I huff and look at the crowd of drunkards. Egon can be such a bastard at times.
"So what's the news?" I ask turning my attention to Egon. His blue eyes look at me and I just wait. His mouth is chiseled into an unpleasant expression. As if he just took a large gulp of expired milk.
"Tell my honestly, Mira." He cups his hands together on the table, "am I... Unpleasant?"
I give him my most confused look with an unattractive, "huh?"
"Do I come off as bad company?"
"You're a demon boss with a reputation for having a short temper. Of course you'd come off as bad company." His shoulders stiffen and eyes narrow. "What? Did you think you were something else?"
"No, but I feel so... I don't know."
I frowned, "somebody quit again didn't they."
"Georgette," he waved a hand. "She just called me and said she's leaving the territory for someone else. Because he can give her more than I can." He banged the table, "what the hell can she want? I provided everything she needed. I fucking paid for her HBO channels."
"You told her if she wanted AC that she could buy it herself." I deadpan and he gave me a look of exasperation. "Not to mention all the contracts you gave her were shitty."
"Well if she didn't act like such a bitch then maybe I would have given her better jobs." Egon leans back and takes a deep breath. Breathing exorcises do nothing for us, but I think he likes to believe it calms him down. Whatever floats his boat I guess.
I lean forward and place a hand on the table, "Listen you can't have a duck and expect it not to quack."
He looks at me, "What?"
I roll my eyes. "You can't hire a bitch and expect her not to act like one."
"Your drinks," two cups full of golden liquid were placed on the table. "And for Mira, four cheeseburgers with fries and an onion ring tower." My burgers slid on the table in front of me. Each burger in its own white plate with a side of golden fries. My stomach growled as the stack tower of onion rings was placed in the middle of the table. After the food was placed the half magician waiter then places the ketchup next to me. "Enjoy."
