Deep in the woods of Marsh, there is a big greenish lake near a tall hill. The woods are inhabited by a group of people who built their own settlement since generations ago, and they are friends to the animals around them. Their way of living is mostly by farming, but there are also times when they have to go to nearby town to get some supplies they couldn't make on their own.
Once a month, when the moon is full, a mysterious old lady will come to the village, and the village folk will gather around at the centre to listen to her wisdom. Her wisdom is always in the form of legends, claimed to be passed down to her to spread to those who need them the most.
One legend in particular, is about a frog who sings for the rain. This legend is the most talked about among the village folk, because they have to prepare for it whether they believe in its truthfulness or not. It is also because the old lady had warned them beforehand, and why do they need to be warned. It is also because it has happened before, and it befell on the generations before them.
The frog who sings for the rain.
It is only natural that one will always hear the frogs croaking in the night, especially after the rain. Some say the frogs croak to get the area rains, some say it is to wet themselves; which the latter is humorous since frogs are already slimy themselves, and often hang out at bodies of water.
There is one particular frog, in which its origins is unknown. The sound of its croak is slightly different than the usual croaks of a frog. It is almost as if it is singing similar to a human.
This frog, sings for the rain. For it has fallen in love with the Rain God. Rain God has their own set of time when they will come down to earth and rain on their selected areas. Rain God is believe to be either a blessing or a curse, depends on the luck of an area. Should an area has bad luck, it will be a curse, and floods will happen and crops will wilt; whereas an area with good luck, it will be a blessing, where floods will not happen, and crops will flourish.
The frog who sings for the rain.
Some people believe that the rain that drops are actually tears of the Rain God. Possibly because they feel sad about the fate of a village where drought has come upon them. But what about the areas where it is a curse? For this, people believe the raindrops are the Rain God's poison, brewed specifically to make things worse in the area.
When the time comes, there will be a certain period where time feels so slow. This happens when the Rain God comes down to earth, outside of the schedule they have set, to find a companion for the night. The timing of this is unknown, but those who believe in the existence of the Rain God will know when the time has come.
The frog who sings for the rain.
It sings, one night, believed to be at the lake in the woods. It sings, not caring about what the other species of frogs or insects around it, because it is calling for the Rain God. To the frog, the Rain God is a lovable entity, and not one to be afraid of. Furthermore, the Rain God sometimes bless the calls of the other frogs when they request for more rain.
One night, during the slow-time period, the Rain God will hear the song and will attempt to find it. Despite being a powerful entity, They do not have a good sense of depth and perception, nor good eyesight. They will attempt to find the song, as the Rain God feels it is very soothing.
The search will take almost up to a week.
Once found, the Rain God and the frog will be united, as the frog confesses its love to the Rain God, and the entity accepts and reciprocates it.
However, whenever they are united, the Storm God will storm in and pulls them apart. A fight ensues. This will be the moment when time feels much more faster than before, and the nearby village will get the consequences from the battle. They cannot do anything about it except bracing themselves to survive until the fight ends.
It is believed that the Storm God is jealous of whoever the Rain God chooses for their companion for the night. To their utmost irritation, it is always that one particular frog who sings for the rain.
The only way for the battle to end is when the frog stops loving the Rain God and in order for the Gods to know this is when the frog sings a sorrowful song. However, to let go of someone you love is not easy. As the frog do not care about its surroundings as much as the petty fight between the Gods, and while the village is in danger because of the weather caused by the Gods, the frog will take up to probably one week to almost four weeks to give up its beloved.
Once the sorrowful song has sung, the fight will end, and the Storm God will kill the frog and vanish. The Rain God will rain again, and the sound of the winds will be heard as if it is someone mourning. Few hours later, the sky will turn clear and everyone in the village will come out of their shelter, still with a slight fear.
The village folk will have to start their recovery, and will need to be prepared for the next battle that will ensue, unknown when it will come, as usual.
The frog who sings for the rain,
is as mysterious as the old lady who came to thevillage.
