The Only Reason Why

"MOM!!!!!!" Where was it? My brand new Samsung Galaxy had been sitting on my nightstand. I'd saved up all summer to buy it and now it was lost on the first day of school! To top it off I was running late and I hadn't even put on an outfit.

"Kelsey, what is your problem?" My mom was probably getting ready for work. She already had her business suit on and her high heels clicked all the way up the stairs.

"I can't find my phone," I made a pouty face at her and she rolled her eyes.

"Kelsey did you look under your nightstand?"

"Mom of course I..." I stopped short as I spotted it shortly after I turned around, fully charged and in its purple otter box case.

"Please hurry up and get dressed, you have ten minutes or you'll be late." She gave me her famous 'look' and I knew I needed to hurry.

So then I started my basic daily routine. Usually picking out an outfit took me over twenty minutes, but last night I'd been so excited and nervous I had stayed up till 11:30 picking out the perfect outfit to start my high school experience. It would be a long, hard four years, but all the adults in my life seemed to think I'd make it just fine.

The outfit was a purple floral patterned dress I'd gotten at Charlotte Russe for half off. I wore it with a thin, light brown belt that fit snugly around my waist. The brown flats, with a dark purple bow almost completed the look, but the dark purple rose necklace tied the whole thing together perfectly. With five minutes left to go I brushed my thin, straight, blond hair, put in my contacts and grabbed my already packed backpack.

My younger sister, Aylin, was already sitting in the passenger seat of my mom's SUV scrolling through instagram.

"Where did you put the hair curler?" I asked her.

"It's in my room. Don't touch it." she hissed.

"Mom bought it for the BOTH of us." I added emphasis on the word.

"Yeah, well Dad bought me one, that you broke. So go buy your own, because that one is mine." Our Dad had died in december of lung cancer. He never smoked, if thats what you were thinking.

"Don't play that card. Your only in seventh grade, how can you be so vicious." she sighed and answered a call from one of her annoying friends. Just then my mom got in the SUV.

"Mom I thought we only had ten minutes." I smirked.

"Well, I was grabbing someones phone." my mom said as she handed back my samsung galaxy.

"Oh thanks." I said sheepishly.

The whole drive was just me thinking about all the things I could do wrong today. And of course, before I knew it Aylin was waving goodbye to my mom and I was being driven to my new school.

"Kelsey, it's time sweetie."

"Oh, um, I don't feel good." It was slightly true, after all butterflies in the stomach can count as an illnes, right?

"Kelsey, c'mon your friends are probably waiting right at the front doors, you'll be ok. You ended up loving middle school, so this isn't quite as different." my mom smiled at me and I couldn't help but feel a tad bit better.

"Mom, even though I'm a freshman, I love you lots, and here I go." Opening the SUV door was like the beginning of a new territory. Here I was, in front of the very building I had feared since kindergarten. All my childhood fantasies about school dances, musicals, and romances were finally right in front of me. I stepped into a new territory, and there they were. My three besties, Cass, Ella, and Jacob.

"Hello fello freshman." I said smiling.

"Kelsey! OMG!!! Let me see your schedule. The three of us have been dying to see you!" of course Cass was the first to break the ice. She was fearless, and high school hadn't fazed her at all.

"Kels, how's life?" Ella hugged me as Cass ripped my schedule out of my hands.

"I'm good. What's going on Jake?"

Jake smiled and gave me a huge hug. He'd been one of my close friends since kindergarten. "Nothing much, just trying to forget all my fears for the day." his expression told me exactly how he felt, upset and scared.

"Oh me too!" my eyes lit up as I realized I had nothing to fear with my friends by my side.

"Guess what Kels, you have first and third hour with me, and second and fifth hour with Ella." said Cass handing me back my schedule.

"You also have second and fourth hour with Jake." replied Ella.

"Oh, so no one's in my sixth hour." I said glumly.

"Don't get discouraged, maybe Leroy will be in that class." winked Cass. Leroy was a strawberry blond, freckled, smart, and super nice guy I'd been crushing on since the first day of seventh grade. After Ella had accidentally asked him out for me I'd always been to nervous to talk to him.

"Shut up Cass," I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help smiling. Then the bell rang and I realized I hadn't even found my locker.

My friends and I went our seperate ways and I looked for the locker number 307. My breath caught in my throat, there was Leroy, at locker 306, HIS locker!

"Leroy!"
