Jane's P.O.V

The hay in the cage looked clean so l wasn't daunted when they proceeded to shove me in the cage. I lay down in the hay and relaxed as if l was at the beach sunbathing. The hay was really itchy but otherwise, l was comfortable, not like before with the horses. The horses that were dragging the cage were moving leisurely making me forget that l was actually going to prison for something l could not really remember doing. The guards did not speak to me at all for the whole journey and just left some water in a small glass every so often.

I refused to make a scene because l did not want to die or get injured but also because l wanted to see what they had against me. I was lulled into a deep sleep by the rocking of the cage and had a very enjoyable dream until the shadows invaded my dream and started whispering things like "Call the king" and "Say His name" which made me wake up with a start and look around nervously. I also looked at the guards and made sure that they were not disturbed. I heard sounds of their conversation and decided to listen in.

"Poor lad he is already approaching his death at this stage in his life. He may be hanged!"

"No! Not hanged but stoned! Apparently, that is the punishment for breaking the rules."

"But he is too young! He looks barely 18 and he's already sentenced to death."

"Then again he should not have sinned. This is what l heard from the priest down the road." The other priest edged over to listen to his whispering.

"It seems that he was involved in the bullying of that woman priest in the biggest chapel. What was her name? Ah who cares she's just a woman!"

"Yes! This is what l don't understand. She is just a woman! Why are they killing a capable man just for her!"

"He broke the two commandments though. Thou shall not bear false witness and thou shall not put bad ideas into others' heads. The other priests who bullied the girl said that he was the one who told them to do it and even bribed them with money and jewels. No one knows where he got the jewels from so I'm suspecting that there will be two cases instead of just one."

But wait just a minute. I don't remember telling them that. In fact, l don't remember seeing any of them after l left the chapel so how could l be blamed for this and why wasn't anyone doubting it! Also, l am certainly not a thief. I never left the chapel at all except for that one time between transfers when l learnt about the poison so they can't pin it down on me.

I can't escape. I need to go and defend myself since no one is doing it for me.

"Also, l heard that the pope is beside himself with anger and worry. I think it was because Su Luo is still a priest for the time being and is under his jurisdiction so why was he being arrested before questioning."

"But l heard rumours that it was not true. He just wanted to know whether Su Luo could be saved and avert embarrassment from the church but he clearly can't so he can just directly ignore everything."

"However, this lad can save himself. At the trial, there will be a lying test to see whether he was actually lying or telling the truth. Tailor-made for all light priests. If you tell a lie, then your light power decreases but if you tell the truth then it increases."

"So you're telling me that he can save himself from all his charges and walk home free or even if he was sent to jail, he can just escape because of his monstrous power. Isn't that a win-win situation?" A win-win situation indeed! Thanks for the idea gentlemen. I will be using both of them.

"Oh! We're almost there. Let's stop talking so that we don't get caught by the head guard."

After that l couldn't hear any more sounds of conversation and just lay peacefully on the hay, making plans for my trial. Soon enough, we got to the prison and l was assigned a room there. The only reason for that was because my trial was near and l would transfer to the cells after the ruling. This was complete and utter bull. Bad luck has been trailing me since day one.

Before l knew it, it was the day of the trial and l could not wait to get things over with. That small period of waiting was eating at me making me all nervous and agitated and to others it made me look guilty. At the courtroom, there were a lot of jeers and insults being hurled from across the room that would indeed make a sailor blush. I did not pay them any attention and just directly went to my seat to listen to what questions they had for me.

They put two strings around my pulse and then ties the ends to a glass globe. The globe emitted a bright white light that made the whole room quieten down in awe at the huge magic power. The judge's booming voice could then be heard from my left.

"Su Luo, there are many questions that will be asked now. Do you swear that you will say everything truthfully and nothing but the truth?"

"I swear"

"Then under the Lord's watchful eyes, the hearing shall begin! Su Luo, were you at the chapel on the day of the incident?"

"Yes. I was there because l was packing up to leave the chapel." The white light then emitted a golden glow to show l was telling the truth.

"Did you meet with the affiliated persons on the very same date?"

"Yes, l did. I walked past them on my way back to my room." The golden hue increased.

"Did you ever give them money or any other material possession on that day?"

"I did not. I never saw them again after that time l walked past them." The golden hue was still there.

"Did you think unholy or unpure thoughts on that day?"

"Yes, l did."

"What were you thinking about?"

"I can only tell you what l was not thinking about. I was not thinking about bullying the woman priestess at all or even talking to the other priests about it."

"But you have not answered the question."

"I am sorry but l cannot tell you what l was thinking about because that is between the pope and me."

"When did you leave the chapel?"

"The next day immediately in the morning."

"The hearing is over and we shall tell you our judgement."

The golden hue had not once gone down which meant that l told the truth and everyone could see that so l was one hundred percent sure that l was going to be set free.

"We declare Su Luo guilty of all the charges and he shall be stoned to death in the next week. This judgement cannot be overturned!"
