Being a Spy and Going Undercover:

Chapter One Rewrite:

Fire within my Veins!

My eyes burned and watered, I cough trying to get my breathing under control. The smoke was hurting my lungs and made my vision blurry. The burning sensation in my throat had me choking and I could smell the burning flesh. I gag but try to hold in my breathing. All around reddish orange flames surrounded me.

The once beautiful decorations of The Academy were all burning, all the memories in this one place was burning to the ground. I remember the interior design, I would remember because I helped design it all. The once beautiful blue paint burned away, a rumble from above me shook me out of my thoughts. This one place was going to crumble to the ground and no survivors would be found. The dead bodies of comrades were too burned to recognize any of them.

I jumped out of the way just in time, before part of the roof came down. My heart rate accelerated and the adrenaline hit me. I rolled on the ground before I finally stopped and felt the heat from the flames on my skin. My skin turned red where I got burned and it looked bad. I screamed in pain and look away. I had to ignore the horrible pain, if I didn't I know that I wouldn't last long. The last switch of my emotions was turned off in that moment. All around me I heard the screams of people along with kids getting burned, this moment would always haunt me.

I got up quickly and looked for the exit; my instructor drilled all exits in my brain in the past. I look around the ruble trying to find somebody, any survivor. Kids were slaughtered here and I knew I wanted to save anyone I could. Dead bodies surrounded me some I realized were great friends, others I didn't know very well. I wonder how this could have happened. This fire was no accident and I knew that, it wasn't much of a surprise to me. The Academy had too many enemies from over the years.

We agents were trained for these situations; to protect, to kill. We all failed, the burning walls were proof. The Academy was down. I know with the smoke I should have gotten out of the building when the alarms went off but I couldn't. I couldn't be a coward and leave partners behind. I grew up with all these kids; together we were the agents, the agents that many people were scared of, the agents who were ghosts, the ghosts that no person could ever find if they got into trouble with the law. We were above that law all together.

I tried looking around but the air around me was covered in smoke. All the kids and adults I had heard screaming before were now all silent. Which meant two things; one of the two things was that some of the agents got out; the other choice not being such a good one was that most of them had died being burned to death.

Was this really how my world ended? By burning buildings and being burned to a crisp with no one there to save us? I always had the thought I would be killed in combat, maybe protecting the president, or a government official? But whom was I kidding; nobody lived to be past there twenties in this line of business. I wanted to be the best agent of my lifetime and that's what I would do. I wanted to be remembered that's all that mattered to me.

I moved closer to the exit and didn't watch where I was going. Under the ruble that had just fallen there was a little girl. I tripped over her foot and braced myself for the fall that would come. I got up quickly and picked up the burnt ruble. My hands were burning but I didn't really care. This little girl needed me in that moment and I knew that I wouldn't just walk away. When I heaved the last heavy piece of ruble I noticed movement coming from the little girl. I quickly picked her up but almost dropped her, it surprised me how small she looked but how heavy she really was.
