I was born, 1996. My parents were young, in their early twenties and two happy lovebirds. My mum, Cassie and dad jack both loved music, in fact, they actually met at a music group gathering. Mum plays the flute and is great at piano while dad loves guitars. They dated for a while, then got married and had two kids. My older brother also shares the rest of my family's passion. His name is Oscar and he plays the drums and is trying to learn how to read music. Then there's me. I am April, a girl who has no talent what-so-ever with anything related to music. I love to run.
On the day of my tenth birthday, I got the thing that I wanted for my entire life. Instead of my parents giving me music books or something like a mini microphone, I got a pair of shoes. This might sound quite boring to most people but to me, these shoes will change my life forever.
They were good-quality, blue and black, sports/running shoes. at school, I have always been faster than everyone else. Even boys! But I found it hard to run in old, uncomfortable, worn through school shoes. I tried them on and they fit perfectly. I immediately ran outside and tried them out. I was fast! They were really good and the next day, at school, I walked through the gate smiling as a couple of my friends noticed that I had gotten EXACTLY what I had dreamed of.
By sheer chance, the athletics day event had been delayed until a couple of weeks later so I practiced. Every morning, before I started to get ready at school, before the bell rang at the beginning of the day, at recess and at lunch, after school and I did at least one lap extra than every other kid in my grade in sport classes.
Today, I am so grateful for that present. It changed my life and I don't know where I'd be without it. Speaking of where I am, right now, I am sitting back, watching my daughter, Millie, swim around in the pool with my gorgeous husband, Mitch. Mitch, like me is also a gold medal Olympian, but he won his with his javelin, not running.
