Haru skipped around his mother, his fluffy orange tail swaying behind him. His sister, Sora, was watching him, obviously bored.
During the hot months of Summer, there wasn't much to do. Their mother was always loafing around doing nothing, trying to remain cool, so Haru and Sora never had anyone else to play with. They often ran around the house anyways, trying to find some fun. Though half of the time they just got under the large paws of their owners, disrupting them.
"Mom!" He said loudly in a stretched out manner.
"What is it now, Haru?" She sighed, her ears twitching.
"Sora and I are bored! Play with us!"
"No. I've already told you enough times."
"Fine." He pouted, stomping over to his sister. "Let's go play with the toys!"
Sora reluctantly stood up, sighing. "Fine, if you insist." She gestured her head for him to lead the way to the room filled with their toys, and he figured she would follow after he did. Haru looked over the carpeted floor, which was littered with small toy mice, feathers or balls. He raced in, pouncing on a mouse and gripping it in his teeth and tossing it at Sora. She batted it back at him in a lazy manner, and he frowned.
"Come on Sora! Play like you mean it!"
"But it's boring and hot." She complained, laying herself back down again.
Haru groaned, running out of the room. "There's nothing to do!" He raced over to the stairs that led to the second story of the house, and he scrambled up. He could hear the bustling of his owners moving in different rooms. One of them walked out, noticing him and picking him up. He heard them speak to him in a high-pitched tone, but didn't quite understand what they had said to him. After another moment they carried him back downstairs, into the kitchen, and placed him on the counter. They opened one of the windows, then opening a large white container with cool air coming from it.
Haru glanced at the opened window, opening his maw to smell the fresh breeze.
"I want to go out there.." He muttered to himself.
He leapt up to the windowsill, hauling himself up and taking a quick glance at his owner, who was now looking at him. He recognized a look of pure confusion contort their facial expression, before it changed to shock. They went to reach for him, so he turned and hopped out of the window, onto the warm grass below.
"Woah!" He said in admiration, sniffing the green blades. He lifted his head as he heard the door to their backyard open, and one of his owners walking out. They glanced around before actually spotting him, but when they did they ran towards him.
"Uh oh!" He ran away from them, towards the tree line that was at the edge of their yard.
He dove into the shade, hopping around bushes and small ferns. He could still hear his owner crunching after him, so he continued forward. After a few more moments of walking, he felt his paws drop beneath him, and he fell into a cold creek with a squeak.
He landed awkwardly, slipping onto his side on the wet, slimy stones. The cool water soaked the side of his fluffy orange and white-speckled fur and he still lay there, his owner coming a moment later and picking him up. They carried him back to their house and put him with his mother for her to clean him up.
"What happened?" His mother asked with a stern look in her light brown gaze.
"I went outside, into the trees! And then I fell into a really cold creek, and owner came and found me after chasing me trying to get me back here! Now I'm back here with you, cold and wet."
His mother sighed, pulling him towards her and beginning to lick his damp pelt. "Don't go outside again, or else." Haru didn't bother questioning what the, "or else" meant, because he knew it would just anger her. He yawned, resting his chin onto the tops of his paws. "Just rest." He heard his mother say quietly.
And that's what he did.
Rest.
