"The important thing is not how long you live... it's what you accomplish with your life." - Grovyle
When a child turns 14 they are permitted to enter into the pokemon league challenge. With just the clothes on their back and the bonds between them and their pokemon, they strive to achieve the ultimate title, Pokemon League Champion. My Hilbert since he could remember counted down the seconds that he could start his journey. I was excited along with him since I never had the chance to start my own journey.
It was 3 month before he turned 14 when it happened... No one, especially me expected him to do it. That day a part of me died with him, my baby who I raised on my own. His friends were devastated and would visit me whenever they could, Hilbert was a light within the dull town of Nuvema. No mother wants to attend their own child's funeral.
Every day I contemplated what was left for me, Hilbert's father wasn't in the picture and I seemingly had nothing else to live for. The only reason I didn't follow my light was for his friend's support. They visited me and shared their dreams and aspirations. Bianca confided in me about her dependence on Hilbert as he made up for the strength she lacked. Cheren would also visit but he would just visit Hilbert's room. I had suspected Cheren's feelings for my son and it hurt knowing he would never see him again.
When the time came around that Bianca and Cheren would start their journey I heard a knock at the door. When I opened the door I found Professor juniper holding a little present. She smiled at me, "Would it be alright if I came in?" she questioned. I nodded holding the door open for her to come in. She set the present on the table and turned to me, "Both Cheren's mom and Bianca's mom agreed it would be best if the two of them received their first pokemon from you, here." she then reached her hand into her lab coat and pulled out a little rectangular box, "This is for you." she promptly left after saying that.
I was confused at the gesture and after she left I opened the box finding a letter and a town map. In the letter she wrote, "If you decide to I would like your help in assisting Cheren and Bianca in their Journey as well as assisting in completing the Pokedex. There is a third Pokeball inside the box, you can return it if you decide not to." I nearly cried after reading that. How could I do that? It was my son who was supposed to go on this journey, not me.
A rush of emotions hit me as I questioned what I should do. As I sat contemplating I heard a knock at my door, "Come in!" I called. Both Cheren and Bianca walked in wearing their trainer gear. Bianca had a nervous excitement about her and Cheren radiated a cold confidence, "Are you two ready? The box is over on the kitchen table." I said standing up as they both shuffled to the box.
They both looked at each other and then to me, "We thought it would be best that you opened it for us..." They both looked down sadly. I too felt a pang of sadness but I gave them a sad smile, "Ok." I walked over to the gift and pulled the ribbon off to reveal three Pokeballs.
The both of them nodded and reached in knowing their choice before coming. Cheren chose snivy and Bianca chose tepig leaving Oshawott alone in its Pokeball. They smiled releasing their new found friend, each pokemon seemed incredibly excited to have their own trainer, "You're such a cute little guy!" Bianca gushed while Cheren gave his pokemon a fist bump.
After greeting their first pokemon and getting to know them a bit better they both look into the box at the pokemon left over, "What is going to happen to Oshawott?" Cheren questioned. I looked at the two and their curious eyes, they both looked so innocent and I didn't want to see them go. With that I had made up my mind, I walked past the two and lifted the Pokeball releasing Oshawott, "He is going to be my partner." I said with a smile as Bianca smiled in surprise.
