CHAPTER 1

“Zachary! If you are not down here in 10 minutes, I am going to take your PS3 and you will be grounded for 3 weeks, no parties!” My mom shouted for the nth time downstairs. Its 7 AM, on a Saturday, and I am not really in the mood to leave the house. Why should we go to this stupid lunch meeting again? God, I am so frustrated. I am already dressed, but I don’t feel like leaving my bed, just staring at it and contemplating if I should just lie down and ignore my hysterical mother.

“Kid, are you ready?” My dad interrupted my thoughts as he peeked through my door.

“Dad, I really don’t want to go..”

“Well, neither am I, but your mother will kill us both. She’s going to take your PS3 and my golf clubs, so come on. It wouldn’t be that bad, I promise.”

I forced myself up the bed and dragged my feet out of my room. I am really not in the mood for this lunch meeting or whatever, and I scowled as I see my mother all giddy and dressed up as soon as I took the last few steps of the stairs.

“Oh my god baby you look amazing! And do not scowl on me, you look just like your father and I only need one of him around. Now now, can you please get the gifts and load them to the car?” I reluctantly grabbed the gifts and went outside to the car. Once I was able to load them, I took out a cigarette. Looking around, I noticed that we have new neighbors. Huh, I didn’t know the Hales moved out already. Well we have never been closed to the family and their son is a little weird too. I then noticed that the man is having a hard time unloading a huge box from the back of his car, so I decided to approach him and help.

“Hi, good morning! Do you need help with that?”

A man around his forties, turned around and smiled. “Sure son, thank you.” We then lifted the box and set it on their porch. “By the way, my name is Richard Watters, we are new here.”

“Yeah I noticed. The Hales used to live here.” Before the old man can reply, I heard my mother calling my name. “I need to go sir, we live there,” pointing at our house, “and those are my parents. It was nice meeting you.” I then ran towards my mother and father waiting for me inside the car.

“Who was that?” My mom said as soon as I slid on the backseat.

“Richard Watters, I think they are new here.” I answered.

“Oh they are our new neighbors! I hope they are good people, you know you’ll never know if these people are…” I immediately tuned out my mother’s rambling, putting on my earphones and turning the volume of my iPod to the maximum. This is going to be a really long day, and I am dreading it. I am not really close to my mother, she likes to think of me as a child and never really tried to understand me. It sometimes feels like she really does not know me at all, just the image of what her perfect son should be. My father on the other hand, knows me really well, like the palm of his hand. We don’t talk a lot, but he is trying hard to spend time with me, and he really is observant. He knows if I have problems, or troubles at school, or if there is something bothering me.

I am grateful that my dad is here, or else I am going to lose my mind! I cannot wait to go back to school on Monday, I always feel at ease around my friends, even though most of them are assholes and douche bags. I never really understood why once you are a member of the school’s basketball team and you are in the popular clique, you should automatically become a complete ass to everybody. I mean I enjoy the popularity, but I do not like the other things that come with it. But I appreciate all of my friends, because I know under their facades, they are just like me, someone who just wants to survive high school and make the most out of it.
