"Shhh calm down child" cooed my mother's voice as she tried to calm me down.
For my sobs were wild and uncontrollable.
"Is the man gone now?" My voice cracked as I struggled to spit the words out between my cries.
"Shhhh..." Was the only answer
But it wasn't enough.
My mother rubbed my cold arms with her shaking hands.
I lifted up my head and my eyes met my mothers.
Hazy and filled with fear.
She nodded her head.
I brushed up against her and listened.
My eyes were fixed to my mother's face, for i feared what lay around me.
I watched my mother's breath become ice in the cold air.
I was cold and hungry, but that didn't matter.
It mattered that I was alive.
