The Dragon____________________________________________________________

The boy sat on the cool mountainside, looking lazily at his father's flock. The sheep grazed happily on the lush mountain grasses and various weeds. The light breeze chilled the boy and he shivered. The rags he wore could not protect him from the elements like the warm wool pelts the sheep had. He sighed slowly and something high above him caught his attention. It appeared to be a large bird descending quickly. Suddenly the sheep panicked, running wildly about the clearing on the mountain cliff. A few of the scared creatures found themselves being trampled or even accidently being pushed off the cliff by their stampeding flock members. The boy's eyes filled with fear as he stared at the fast approaching creature. He could just make out its bat-like wings and black scales. It's belly glittered from the thousands of gemstones that adorned it. He tried to run but found that he could not move. Frozen in place, he could only await his doom. The great black dragon loosed a pillar of blackish flames. The boy cringed and awaited the agonizing feeling of being burnt alive. When he should have felt pain, he only felt the warm caress of the black flames as they licked gently around his body. The dragon landed gracefully in front of him and the whole mountain seemed to shake from the force. With outstretched talons, the dragon snatched up the boy and cradled him to its chest which was warm from the fire that burned deep within the dragon. The dragon took off, jumping off the cliff and snapping out its massive wings to swept upwards by an air thermal. After a few down strokes of the powerful wings, they were soon high in the air and they soared above the land.

The boy was asleep, covered in the protective blanket of black flames that kept the chill of the high altitude at bay. He opened his eyes groggily and saw that they were rapidly approaching a large island. At its most northeastern tip, there was a large settlement and he could see ships going in and out of its harbor. What really caught his eye were the strange black cliffs and the black obsidian mountain that loomed ahead. The dragon descended slowly into the crater at the center of the mountain and then there was only darkness.
