I heard a knock at my door and walked slowly to it, composing myself. When I opened it I gasped, there stood Jacob in very fine clothing. I almost didn't recognize him in the deep green shirt and black vest, almost matching my dress..... He seemed to be just as enthralled with my appearance as I was with his before he snapped out of his daze.
" Are you ready for dinner, m'lady?"he asked with a very serious voice, extending his hand to me. I smiled and nodded, taking his hand, I couldn't help but smile slightly.
When we reached the deck my eyes widened, in the corner by the helm was a table set in beautiful crystal ware, there were strings of lights above and a candle set in the middle of the table.
"Y-you did this all for me?"I asked in shock as he pulled out a chair for me.
He nodded, "you said to woo you, and this is the way I thought of to woo you."
I smiled genuinely, "well, I must say you are doing a good job."
"I'm glad you think so, have I mentioned how beautiful I think you look tonight?" he asked
I blushed," no I don't believe you have...."
"Well then, you look so very beautiful tonight, Anna,"
"Why thank you Jacob, you look quite dashing yourself," I replied with a smile.
"I am glad you think so," he smiled warmly back at me.
One of the crew came with two plates of food and set them in front of us.
"Enjoy," he said with a grin.
"Thank you Jerry," I replied, smiling warmly at him before he left us to our meal.
We ate quietly for a few minutes, I was going nuts inside trying to figure out what to say to break the silence. I looked at Jacob, wondering what he was thinking.
"The food is delicious," I finally commented softly.
"I am glad, t'was my late mother's recipe," he replied warmly.
"Where did ya grow up Jacob?"
"London, originally but when I was 7 my mother died and my father brought me with him out to sea. So, in my mind... I grew up at sea."
"Were you and yer father close?"
Jacob shook his head, his eyes darkening slightly, "not very... I reminded him too much of my mother."
"I'm sorry..."
"Why are ya sorry?"
"That ya had to live through that... "I replied softly.
He took my hand gently," don't be... I'm the one who should be sorry... and I am.... I am truly sorry for what I put you through..."
A few stray tears escaped my eyes, "Jacob... even though I'm still hurt here..."I brought my hand to my heart, "I forgive you," I whispered.
He squeezed my hand gently, "Thank you Anna, ye have no idea how much that means to me." I smiled softly, withdrawing my hand so I could finish my dinner which was starting to go cold.
After a few minutes my stomach was full, I sighed contently, staring up at the stars above us.
"Anna, would you care to take a walk with me?"Jacob asked, I looked at him, I hadn't even heard him stand up.
I smiled, taking his hand, and standing up. He led me to the front of the ship, stopping by the railing, I felt his arm wrap lightly around my waist to keep me in balance. I stared out at the darkened horizon, closing my eyes, breathing in the wonderful scent of the sea. We stood like that, in each other's arms for what seemed like hours, neither of us seeing the need to speak.
"I have a confession to make..."Jacob began, his words breaking our comfortable reverie, I turned to face him, waiting for him to continue. "Anna... I wanted to wait to tell ye this but I fear I'll lose ya again before I could say a word..."he paused for a long moment then looked back into my eyes. "I love ya Anna-Marie, I know I've made horrid mistakes and I don't even care if you don't feel the same for me, but I love ya with all my heart-"
I stared up at him, still processing his words, a genuine smile spread across my face, "I... I believe I love ya too-"
The words barely had come out of my mouth before our lips met, at first barely touching, then slowly came closer till our lips were moving against each other in sync. After what seemed like an eternity, he pulled away gently. I wrapped my arms around him, resting my head on his chest. He kissed my forehead gently.
He loves me!
And I most definitely love him...
I don't know what this will mean for the future...
But I guess we will see what happens...
After a while of standing like that, in each other's arms, I pulled away slowly," I'd better get to bed, you need sleep too..."
Jacob sighed, pecking my cheek lightly," sweet dreams love."
I smiled at him," likewise," I whispered before heading to my room in a dreamlike happiness.
