Toni's POV

December 15, 1983

"That's it for today, class. For your homework tonight read chapter 7..." The science teacher continued talking as she assigned our homework while as the bell for lunch rang. She mostly being ignored. Lots of different conversations filled the air while the hallways started to become packed with students.

I gathered all my belongings and headed out the classroom to be joined by Lisa.

"You took notes?" She asked me. She had slept the whole class, like she pretty much did everyday when we read out of the book.

I handed her my notebook. "Give it back last period?"

"Yeah, I gotchu." She put it on top of the other books in her hand. "You wanna come over and help me study for that test in precal?"

"I can't. My mom wants all of us to come home straight after school so we can rehearse." I said, referring to myself and my four younger sisters.

"Damn." She said as we both put our books in our locker. "Are y'all gon' be done in time to come to the game? I got a way we can get in free."

     "Who?" I raised my eyebrow.

"Number 11." She smirked. "That one kid who's always harassing me, trying to get my number."

I smacked my lips. "Lisa. You know that ain't right."

"What? I didn't ask. He offered." She walked through the crowded hallway. "So are you coming?"

"I don't know. We're probably not gonna be done in time. Plus I got three test tomorrow. I wasn't gon' go anyway." I said carelessly.

Out of all the noise in the hallway, the loudest was Jada and Pac. They got into it, again. It was always something with the two of them.

Jada slammed the locker in Pac's face, "If I tell you I ain't do it, then I ain't do it. And since you so worried, you must've did it with some other bitch!"

"What the hell? You know how stupid you sound accusing me of that shit?!" Pac yelled angrily. "I didn't accuse you of shit. But it must be true if you getting all riled up over it."

"Should we stop them?" I asked Lisa as we seemed to get closer to them.

She shook her head, "It's not our business. Let's just go eat."

We went to the cafeteria, which was about three times as loud as the hallway.

Lisa and I got our food then went to our table where we sit everyday with the rest of our friends. There was Tionne, Rozonda, and Rozonda's boyfriend Dallas and his boys.

"Hey guys," I sat down with my tray.

     "Hey," Everyone replied individually.

"You guys coming to the party tomorrow night?" Dallas asked us. Dallas always threw the best parties. Well at least that's what I heard.

"You already know I am." Lisa said before taking a bite of her pizza.

     Tionne nodded, "Yea, I'm down."

"You going too." Lisa added, looking at me.

I shook my head, "I got church tomorrow night. My parents ain't gonna let me out of it either."

Lisa thought for a second, then spoke. "Tell them we're doing a project at my house that'll take the whole weekend. Boom, problem solved."

My parents were strict when it came to things being done outside of home and church. Pretty much everytime I went somewhere, they always thought I was at Lisa's.

      I shrugged, "I don't know, Li."

She rolled her eyes. "C'mon Tone, damn. Live a little. It's one party. And you're going, to get your mind off shit."

      "Yeah, I doubt that'll help." I mumbled.

      Lisa smacked her lips, "C'mon."

      "Please, Tone?" Ro begged.

"Okay damn," I gave in. "I'll ask tonight so I can come over right after school."

"Good." Lisa smiled, pleased with my answer.

"The only problem is I don't have nothin' cute to wear." I began.

"And you already know I got that covered." She responded immediately after. I smiled and continued eating my lunch.

Dallas cleared his throat. "This time I don't wanna catch none of y'all asses fucking in the rooms."

"Nigga, that just be you." Lisa said, making everybody at the table laugh.

Dallas corrected her, "Nah, that was Pac and Jada, and you and-"

Lisa cut him off, "Okay nigga, it was a joke damn. While you tryna put my business out there."

"Man," Ti rolled her eyes, "I hope the cops don't shut it down like last time."

"Why they shut it down?" I asked curiously.

Lisa shook her head as if she didn't want Ti to continue. It seemed as if she caught the hint and stopped, but Ro didn't pay Lisa any attention and continued anyway. "Shawn and some other guy. They were fighting over some girl."

My whole mood dropped when I heard that name. Shawn and I went out sophomore year and half of Junior year. We ended on really bad terms. I never truly got over it. So much went down between us.

I pushed my tray slightly to the side once I felt my appetite disappear.

Lisa twisted her face up. "Damn, Ro. Do you ever shut up?"

"What?" Ro looked at Lisa lost. Her and Ti didn't know about Shawn. Our relationship was private. The only person who knew about us dating was Lisa, and she didn't know everything.

"Anyway, I doubt he'll even be there since him and Dallas fell out after that." Lisa whispered to me, I guess trying to erase the thought of him being there from my mind.

I nodded, "I'll be back. I have to go to the bathroom." I got up and emptied my tray before leaving out the cafeteria.

I decided to walk the halls for a minute before going back to the lunch room.

I thought I was over Shawn, but just hearing his name brought up so many old memories and emotions. I couldn't even talk about it with no one. Our relationship held so many secrets. And to hear that he was fighting over a girl, meant he already moved on.
