Getting some rest seemed to be impossible. Is this even real? Is this all just a big joke? Like at one point or another someone’s going to come out with a mike, a bunch of people gripping onto cameras and yelling ‘You Just Got Punk’d)?
Then again, Ben wouldn’t be lying down on the bed next to me after crying himself to sleep. He wouldn’t agree on anything like that because he knows I take things a bit too serious.
I sigh and twist my head in the opposite direction towards Sandy.
After they all had left the hospital, which I began to feel was never going to happen, Sandy had dragged a chair close to my bed and rested her head by the wall.
I look at her peaceful, harmless face but the idea doesn’t sink in. Sandy that I know would slam her fists by the door, cry until her eyes bleed, scold me for driving too fast, even if she thinks I can’t remember doing so.
She wouldn’t sit down so quietly and take it in so gracefully because it’s just not her, which I know of anyway.
I get some flashbacks of her screaming at me in the middle of the night, right after I got back from a date with Ben, about how careless I am and that I’m throwing away my future by acting so immature.
We always had our ups and downs..I don’t even think there were any ‘downs’ in our relationship. We argue on everything no matter how tremendous or diminutive the issue is.
Seeing her in this position makes me rethink this whole Amnesia situation.
I hope I’m not losing it but this chance is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity.
People go on and on about how they wish they had their own reset button and just undo everything, right? Well, I got mine so why am I so afraid to push it?
I’ll lose Ben.
That’s it; it’s definitely because of that. Who knows? Maybe he won’t tolerate being with someone who forgot the past year they had been together and start things over from point zero. However, I was willing to leave everything and everyone I love, including mom, and run off with him for college in London considering this was our senior year.
This will clear all the doubts of whether or not he loves me the way he says he does and of the decision I so willingly decided to take, right?
Before I can make up my mind, Ben shifted to his side so that he’s facing me.
His innocent face is resting in front of me and I take in every minute detail; his dimples, the lines under his eyes and his framed jaw.
The clock reads 8:23 AM and by now, all the room is lit up by the sun rays that tear through the curtains illuminating every corner of it.
His short, poised black hair that is sticking out in all directions had brought him so much attention at our school. Not to mention his trademark black leather jacket that he wears to match his audacious look but now, hangs on mom’s chair.
I don’t even know how I managed to grab his undivided attention.
Sure, I’m on the school’s cheerleading team and I have a bunch of friends here and there although not enough to lead The Ben Herewith to me.
I remember how he glued a note in my locker door back when we were juniors. “Meet me by Lindsay Lohan’s house. 7pm. Super Impt.”
That was our friend Lindsay, not the real one though, just someone who happens to be so pretty and get drunk all the time. Rings a bell?
He groans and then stretches his arms out which makes all his muscles flex and practically visible enough for my great-grandma to notice. Let’s just say her eyesight is not 100% perfect.
I pretend to be sleeping while he gets up so he’s now sitting and sighs.
He nears me because I can smell him, he smells like Axe deodorant that invades my lungs the closer he gets.
He stops approaching me because I can’t hear any moves but the he takes a strand of my curly brown hair and puts it right behind my ear making me shiver and basically want to shed into millions of pieces.
How he manages to make feel that way? I have absolutely no idea.
He kisses me on top of my forehead and then whispers, “Good morning, Scar.”
I feel my cheeks burn and open one eye while the other is still shut.
“How did you know?” I ask.
“Oh me? Nah, it’s just a lucky guess. Although the way you were twisting and turning every minute in bed since last night, was an obvious hint.” He replies raising both of his eyebrows.
Damn it! I forgot how gorgeous he is in the morning. I should really just stop gaping at the dude and spit something out.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” I say, scratching the back of my neck with my free arm. They plugged out all the cannulas last night saying they were no longer needed however, I still have to stay in for at least another week for check up.
He chuckled and then glanced back at me.
“Want some black coffee?” He asks.
I know he purposely mentioned my favourite type of coffee to see how I would react, but I just play confused and nod slowly.
I notice his mood shift and his sudden disappointment but in not less than a second, he replaces it with his genuine smile displaying his perfectly straight, pearly teeth.
“One dark coffee coming right up, your highness.” He says, placing on foot in front of the other and bending down while swaying his arm in the air.
I laugh and my heart flutters. He’s trying and that’s enough to keep me going for the day.
He comes back after a couple of minutes grabbing a mug that’s too hot by the way he’s holding it and flashes a smile at me.
He hands me mine and I gladly take it then stare at him. I don’t know why but I mean, if I did have partial memory loss, that’s how I’d act towards him.
“Right.” He clears his throat. “I’m uhh.. Ben.” He says and then scans both ways.
“Listen, you want to grab a bite at the cafeteria? I’ll explain everything while you have your breakfast.” He says a bit hesitantly.
“Okay, as long as you promise that you’re not a ninja secretly trying to assassin me.” I squint at him.
He laughs.
“I promise.”
He grabs me by the arm towards the door before I can think of a reply and I find myself smiling.
---It's a bit short, I know but I promise that next chapter will be full of events that will include Ben, mostly.
