15 years ago, there were many cases of people who died from trauma in a village at Balik Pulau. All of the victims who died had one thing in common, their eyes were watery. Legend has it that this lady in red haunts people till they cry to get their tears. The residents in that area never knew why she did it. The lady dressed in Red Cheongsam wore pink lipstick and her sharp features made her outstanding. She could draw you with her charm but the moment you fall under her spell, you are dead. She will charmed a victim into her arms and once they are on it the spell will be broken. The victims will be paralyzed. Her eyes will consumed your mind as you looked directly into them. Pain will be transferred to your nerve and that is how you cry to your death as the pain eats you up from the inside.
She always awakens on the fall of Chinese New Year at the end of Balik Pulau where the fisherman village is.
The tale still lives till date and rumours have it that no one lives there during Chinese New Year as they were given advise to leave the village until Chinese New Year is over.
" Bryan! Pack up your stuff! Tomorrow morning we are visiting grandma who recently moved to a new village! Please don't do stuff last minute yeah!" my mom called out to me. " Isn't she coming over to our place like always?" I asked. " Your grandma is getting old every day. It's best for us to pay her a surprise visit!", my mom replied.
"But she restricted us from visiting her during CNY?" I reminded my mom.
" It's once in a blue moon! I am sure we can talk something out with her when we are there!"
" Ok!" I said and combed my hair at the table mirror in my room. My hair is long till my shoulder, flat nose, wrinkles on my face, small forehead and I am 5 feet tall. After I had combed my hair, I took out my backpack from the closet and began to pack my clothes.
After a few minutes of packing my clothes, a knock was on my door. " Yes?" I answered. " We are going out for dinner shortly! Get ready!' my sister informed me. My sister hair is the same length with me, wore black spectacles, sharp pointed nose and chin that edge out.
" Alright! I am almost ready! Give me 5 minutes, I told her!"
Five minutes have passed, I saw everyone was waiting, for me in the living room with their face on the phone screen. I coughed to get their attention. " Let's go!" my dad said and we followed him from behind and into the car.
We left the house and my sister began to whisper in my ears, " I heard grandma lived in a haunted village?! No wonder she does not want us to visit her!". My sis loves to read such stories online. No wonder she often tells good ghost stories that scare people at night. " Nonsense! I want to sleep peacefully tonight!" I blurted out. " I am not! Look at the online source. Is it a legitimate provider", she stood her ground.
" Hey! Hey!" my mom raised her voice to stop us from getting into a quarrel.
At the dining table, we talked about the trip we were going to visit. We also came to a topic on how Chinese Civilization shaped China to what it is today and why it is filled with so much history. China has gone through so many changes and their artifacts are dated back to thousands of years. Today, China is not only rich in funds but in art, culture, and heritage.
After dinner, along the way back to our house, we bought some fireworks that we were going to light up when the clock strikes 12 am. The stalls are crowded with buyers and bargains were offered to those who buy in bunches. Once we have bought what we can afford to spend on, we left for home.
As soon the clock strikes 12 am, the sky is filled with noise and colours. My sister and I held a stick and aimed at the sky. Fireballs blasted out from the stick and we watched it exploded into fireworks in the air. It was so colourful and the season of joy and love has begun.
My family members wished each other Happy Chinese New Year and our phone buzzed with wishes too from social media. The neighbour welcomed Chinese New Year by hanging a firecracker on his front porch. He lighted it up and there goes the loud "BANG" that caused the dogs in the neighbourhood to bark.
Now, I can't wait to visit grandma tomorrow and other relatives too.
The next day, I woke up before my alarm clock did its job.
" Is CNY! I can't believe this!" I told myself.
My sister yelled " HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!" from downstairs. It seems she is already in the mood to celebrate, so am I.
I pushed my blanket aside, kicked the air and jumped out from the bed. I gave myself a stretch and reached as high as I can. After that, I went to take my bath. After coming out from the bathroom, I wore a dark red long sleeves shirt that had a floral design in black. I combed my hair and put some gel on it to make it look stunning like a Hong Kong celebrity. Once the preparation on my kind of style is done, I walked down to the living room.
Chinese New Year songs was on TV and I heard my sister singing along. Listening to hear her sing is a nightmare. I am not saying her voice sucks but rather, to hear her sing ever since she is a kid till she is nineteen is annoying.
I decided to spoil the fun, " Gong Xin, Gong Xi...." with an eerie voice that made her pause. " WHAT??!!!!" She blurted out. " I can't join the fun to sing?" I raised my an eyebrow at her. " Your singing sucks, so no!" She grumped. "Enough children! Please don't fight on the first day of CNY! It is not good", my mom said.
" Sorry, mama!" The both of us apologized to her while our eyes locked on each other. I can see the fury on her face.
" Here is a red packet for the both of you", my mom said while she stretched her hand out. My dad came from the kitchen as he munched on some Chinese snacks. " Here, this is from me!" he said with his mouthful. We accepted it with a bow and thanked them for their generosity.
" Now let's load the luggage into the car! Grandma will love this surprise as much she loves you both!" my dad said while he patted on our heads. I helped my dad load the luggage and the hamper into the car's boot. Oranges were put in a paper bag to give it to grandma. Once we had everything ready, my dad reversed his car from the porch and out we went into the main road.
