Ulterior Motive

When the mentors had left to sort out their thoughts, they made the irrational decision to leave Cai Xu Kun alone with Autumn.

"It's been a long time, huh?" Autumn asked softly. Cai Xu Kun glared at her, but didn't reply. She laughed bitterly.

"I remember when we were still young," she mused. "Dreaming happily about our debut."

"Shut up." Cai Xu Kun snapped.

"Let me finish!" Autumn snapped back. Cai Xu Kun stepped back, unsure of why her voice contained so much fierceness behind it.

"I don't want to hear about you gloating over your success from stealing," Cai Xu Kun snarled. Autumn stepped closer to him.

"You should know that I did it all for a reason," she said slowly. "I thought you of all people would know that I don't act impulsively."

"Are you telling me you had some ulterior motive?" Cai Xu Kun asked incredulously. "You're the one who stole my lyrics, ruined our friendship, and ended my dream. And just when I get another opportunity, you crash into my life again. I can't-" he couldn't finish due to his throat thickening. He pushed her away forcefully. "Don't. Just don't. I don't want to see you ever again."

"Cai Xu Kun." He glared at her. "I did it for you, idiot." How could she still talk to him like that, even after the five years of distance?

"You went around for years, parading my words, rising to fame. I guess you're happy, but it could've been us. I think that every single day. It could've been us."

"It still could be." Autumn advanced towards him. He looked up with challenge in his face, as if to say, how?

"I convinced my company to have an audition. They agreed, and I was also to be one of the judges."

"You?" Cai Xu Kun deadpanned. Autumn rolled her eyes.

"Anyways, I showed them one of your older practice videos, and they were pretty impressed. They asked me to contact you for the audition." Cai Xu Kun didn't hear the last part. All he was focused on were the theories in his head.

"So you took the lyrics for yourself to become famous and popular, and then planned on helping me out later?"

"I guess," Autumn shrugged. "You would've had a better chance of debuting, if you had help. I was willing to help you." When he was still silent, she added, "if we had both been rejected, we would've been done. I know you wouldn't have tried again, no matter how dedicated you were. You give up easily." Her eyes traveled over him, looking him over.

"You've really changed a lot." Cai Xu Kun dismissed her comment, and thought about her previous words. You give up easily. "I really never thought you'd be willing to join the music industry again," she continued.

"A friend convinced me to." Something flickered temporarily in Autumn's eyes. Jealousy? It couldn't be. They had been on their separated paths for so long, she couldn't have any feelings for him anymore. Just like how he was over her. Right? He stilled for one, fearful moment. He could hear his own heart drumming to the beat of a furious rap. He suddenly remembered all the reasons why his heart had become so cold.

Autumn.

His dreams.

Despair

Rejection

Depression

Anger

and above all, Fear.

He was scared. Scared of being hurt again. Scared of having to relive the past, but with someone else. Each step of the way, his mindset and personality had become a little bit colder, more aloof. He was indifferent to the musical world, besides listening to a few of Autumn's songs, which prompted him to fall deeper into his messy loop of emotions.

His thoughts only made him more conscious of Autumn standing near him. When did she get so close? He could make out each eyelash, each reddish strand of hair. It wasn't only him that changed. Autumn looked the same, but also different. He looked over her; a v-line face, large, bright eyes,

He didn't know who moved first. Autumn said she never acted impulsively, but she clearly forgot about that. Something stirred in him when his lips brushed hers. For a split-second, he saw Irene in front of him, and not Autumn. Cai Xu Kun was confused. Irene? But I don't like her. Do I? I don't know. It was too messy, too complicated. He should've stepped away, but he felt powerless.

Autumn moved in so close that even paper wouldn't have been able to slide between them. Cai Xu Kun had an uneasy feeling that someone was watching. Heck, what if the judges saw? He pushed Autumn away quickly. Autumn watched him with a dazed expression, also confused by what had just happened. Cai Xu Kun shook his head and dashed out of the auditorium. He didn't dare look back.

#4 ! 加油❣️

For those who are wondering what Autumn looks like, I feel that Yura (Girl's Day) is closest to what I originally had in mind.
